I looked and didn't see any thread for this, so I'll go ahead and make it

Talk about Paradox games, empires you've made, Republics made rich, dynastic intrigue, mods, etc... I'll start off

Here's my most recent game, starting in 867 in CK2 as the Kingdom of Wessex with a custom ruler

I played CK2 and my Total War mind couldn't comprehend at first. Why can't you recruit? Why are my armies so small? You need a reason to wage war?

50 game hours later, I'm emperor of Irish Britannia defending against an Aztec invasion. 10/10

I love both CK II and EU IV and I have played HOI II and III, Vicky and EU III as well.

I have had some really interesting plays

As a single county count in Ireland, became the Emperor of Brittain, only to inherit the Holy Roman Empire and continue till I conquered the entire world (including India)

Starting as a Norse county in Scandinavia, kept the old religion and conquered Europe in the name of the mighty Vikings

Made Catholic the Christian herresy and Orthodox the official religion plus founded the Roman Empire and reclaimed all its borders as Byzanthium (in a game where Scotland for some reason was a Republic :S)

Conquered all of Essos, Westeros and Sothos as Daenerys Targaryen

Installed a Stark on the Iron Throne and spread the religion of the Old Gods

And ofcourse killing off everyone that is annoying or stands in your way of a proper succession:P

In EU IV

A nice MP game where Russia and The Ottomans would come defend France from falling apart and the Christians joined a holy war against Christianity

As a single county province founded The Netherlands and became the biggest colonial nation in the world

If anyone is interested, I'm always up for a nice mp game, just let me know.

I'm ever discourage from playing Paradox games by the prospect of having to read a thousand-page manual beforehand (a slight exaggeration but not far from the truth).

It is absolutely a lot to take in on your first playthrough but when you played a couple of times it gets better. Not that you know everthing, there are plenty of things I still do not fully know or understand :P (with the exception of HOI III which I have completely give up on..)

It helps if you're doing multiplayer since you have someone to ask or to help you out should you need it

Yep, I have CK2 but I just can't bring myself to play it.

I know it's a great game and I know I'll have more fun playing it than I ever did playing Medieval 2, but I just can't stand to get over that learning curve.

Edit:

This reminded me that there IS a manual for the game! I may decide to read that when I'm bored...

CK2 is probably one of the games i've played the most in my life. So far no playthrough has even been the same and i've got some epic experiences spread out over a almost 300 hours put into it. Losing the Swedish throne, taking it back using the Danish crown and then spending the last 50 years of the save trying to hold the tide that was the Holy Roman Empire back and actually not losing any land but a good hundred of thousands of lives went down somewhere near Hamburg. For some reason 4 out of my 5 best rulers have all been females. They are always the ones that make the largest progress for me.

The last time I played CK2 it was 2 months ago. I defeated the Mongol Invasion (1218 AD) right in Bukhara-Samarkand region. Thanks to my huge army called from my empire that spread from North India to Georgia.

But now I'm too busy with other games...

EU IV and Victoria II are more interesting games but I have to finish my CK2 empire first.

I should also mention that one thing I really like about CK2 is that, unlike Total War (vanilla, at least), alliances actually matter. I've had an interesting war over a single county in Ireland simply because both sides married their daughters off to some high ranking nobility.

Oh yes! One of the most amazing wars i've ever taken part in was when i HAD TO aid my ally in their war against the Holy Roman Empire otherwise i'd have them as my new border buddy and i rather avoid that if i can. Spent at least 15-16 years doing nothing but making sure that the deadlock wasn't broken. All of this because my heir was married to the heiress of the ally. So much at stake and just for that stupid little piece of land

my current game is a tinder box for Francia, my current king has a claim, and his son will inherit it, along with all of Scotland.  Meanwhile the Byzantines aren't taking kindly to them

Speaking of Byzantium, I loved what happend to them in my last game. First Hungary inherited Bulgaria making it twice as big and at the same time Tengri so the Orothodox faith almost dissapeared there. Then the strenghted Tengri declared a Holy War for Greece and won it. While they were still converting it, the Sunni's declared a Jihad for Greece and won it. A couple years later, the Christian pope, not happy with the situation overthere, declared a Crusade for Greece which I, being GB won. This resulted in the most amazing mix of religions in Greece with Orthodox, Tengri, Sunni, Catholic and some minor herresies thrown together :P

@ Rakia Time, If you are going to cheat immortality anyway you should have made a better ruler. Besides military he really isn't that great :P

Nobody can topple Paradox when it comes to making good strategy games. I don't think I can ever go back to the simplicity of total war.

I still remember my first game ever. Despite all the warnings not to start off as a count I did anyway. Started as a german count in Nordgau, and somehow I managed to marry a norweigian princess that inherited the throne. Never got to inherit it since my son died and they switched to elective. Few decades later my grandson becomes elected emperor! Chaos ensues and everyone rebels against me. I barely understand how to play the game as a count, so it was pretty much game over.

I don't even play the base game anymore. I love the mods that have been created for it. Lux Invicta, Game of Thrones, and the Middle Earth one are my favorites.

I used to love Paradox games, but. There's always a but. ;)

One thing I absolutely despise about Pdox is how awful the maps are. In a strategy game played on an Earth map, you should be making at least reasonably accurate world maps, and with the kind of fidelity that you have for provinces you should be making borders that at least approximate something that kind of existed instead of an amorphous blob. Paradox consistently fails on both of these counts (the Himalayas are hundreds of miles away from where they're supposed to be!) and the devs consistently say that it's not a priority. Their only decent world maps - Victoria 2 and Darkest Hour - weren't made in-house. And they promptly took the V2 map and ported it to EU3 DW and EU4, but made it crap in the process. Sigh.

Gameplay is generally okay in most areas, but apart from the Hearts of Iron series there really isn't much strategy or operational art - and in those games, the strategy and operations are painfully unrealistic in a way that badly skews outcomes.

Paradox has historically been very Eurocentric, especially Western Europe, and that still comes through with the current generation of games; they've tried to get better about that, with mixed results.

The best part about Paradox games, much like Total War games, is the modding community. Kaiserreich, VIP, and the ASoIaF conversion are all excellent and have more replayability than the vanilla games they modify.

Yea, Paradox is eurocentric and sometimes it's a bit obvious. They added content for muslims and general arabic cultures but other cultures, religions etc are still way less developed.

They tried to do some Asian focus in Sengoku and it worked for a bit but it is too bad they did not add all that in their other games.

Some screenies from my current game (in Ironman mode since I want those achievements:P)

This was my glorious Empress when I started the game this evening:

Spoiler

And this is my Empire so far, still not complete though. I am going for everthing except Abyssinia because of reasons but since it's still 1287 I got some time left

I just got one problem though. For some reason I can't marry anyone. I can't marry myself off, I can't marry my heir, my family, my court, my vassal, nobody; the dropdown menu is emphy.. So I hope my younger brothers have kids so that my dynasty can continue..

Spoiler

Since Paradox threw out the "Crusader" premise with Rajas of India, it would be awesome if we got some east asian cultures. Granted, Japan would add in a lot of "counties".

I want to have an Imperial Japan fight against the reformed Roman empire. Do it, Paradox.

I'd like to see Paradox develop more of the non-warfare aspects of the game, revamping trade, diplomacy, smarter ai, more decisions, events, etc.

Going through a long period of peacetime is just too boring at the moment. i hope this new expansion to be announced at Gamescon will focuse more on the rpg aspects of the game, instead of just expanding the map again.

Here's my Empire of Hispania before a big, big civil war that tore me apart for a generation. My vassal Kings did not like Manuel's heir.

So, I heard you can create your own alternate history with CK2>EU4. Just how far can it go?
