So I was wondering, is there any difference between creating the HRE through the decision tab and the normal way?
Paradox Games, CK2, EUIV, etc...

yeah, the decision will automatically implement elective succession and I think autonomous vassals, the normal way will create it like any other title

So I'm playing a game as a resurgent Germanic Scandinavia, but somehow along the line the Byzantines have become Catholic

now here's a weird turn of events - after the duchy of Gwynedd (in Wales) was conquered the former duke fled to the HRE, there somehow he got the Duchy of Luxemburg and only a few months later got elected as emperor, his reign was mostly unimpressive but he did one thing - changed the succession laws, so now after his death the HRE has a welsh empress ![]()

my wife asked me to edit the game files a little and make it possible to turn the Abbasid in to a matriarchy, that should be a fun game to watch, meanwhile in my own game their once mighty empire has been reduced to the kingdom of Arabia, also that welsh empress is proving to be as big of a pain in the ass as i originally thought, so far she's started an average of 2 wars per year while handling her 6 Karling vassal kings...

welp, my game as Leo The Khazar has been quite interesting so far, only 37 years after its creation the HRE was destroyed and replaced with a pagan German Empire, in Britain the Queen of Pictland created the Alba Empire and in Sweden the King reformed the Norse religion.........and in Rome Emperor Leo is playing Game of Thrones and pitching in in various succession wars

I haven't gotten to play much post-Charlemagne - how do the new mechanics feel to you? I just have so much gaming on my plate now I can't squeeze a 100+ hour play through in.

well i cant speak for all the new mechanics because they dont apply to the characters i play (tribal holdings, regency overhaul and HRE centric events)
as for those i can speak about:
- assasinations - now they can only be done trough plotting and not trough character interaction, for me that's not only a good way to stop people from killing entire dynasties but it adds extra encouragement to use diplomacy and keep good relations with characters in other courts (a spymaster in your pocket can be an incredible ally, adds 130% to plot power), also i think everyone agrees the percentage based assassination attempts were extremely frustrating
- viceroyalties - amazing, removing the muddied lines of succesion is a huge bonus, also, you can make sure titles dont fall in the hands of incompetent characters
- custom kingdoms - very annoying, creating a custom kingdom removes the territories you hold from their previous de jure kingdoms and empires, it can make the map a huge mess, i actually had to restart a game because of that
- centralization law - also very annoying, it either severely limits the number of vassals you can have or the number of titles you can hold yourself, i mean it might be a good feature for some but im a megalomaniac, i love building a massive empire and micro managing every county, also, getting max centralization requires the Legalism technology to be at lvl 5, it might take a century or two to get it....
and as far as the new start date, it lets me play as my favourite Byzantine emperor (after getting his father out of the way) so im extremely happy with that
Now Way of Life, Way of Life is a life changer, some decisions previously based in the intrigue tab (going on a grand hunt, holding a feast etc) are now only available if you have a specific focus, other than that it adds hundreds of events but i wont spoil them for you, the only thing i will mention is that with a war focus you can now duel your rivals - a good way to get rid of them before they send assassins your way ![]()

good morning, its your unfriendly neighborhood Rakia Time with your turn of the century report, the year 900 is upon us

its been a interesting century - the creation, death and rebirth of the HRE (the white part of the map), next to it is its killer, the German Empire, hungry for conquest and eager to take back the lands lost in the Karling revolt, there's also the newest player on the stage, Wendish Empire, created after the King of Lithuania conquered Poland, Rutheania and half of Rus
the other more interesting realms - Prydain, created and ruled by the Queen of Pictland who eradicated her christian neighbors to form one of the five pagan empires that control most of Europe
Scandinavia, formely 3 seperate kingdoms ruled by 3 brothers it became an empire when the youngest conquered the other two, killing them in the process
And there are the two muslim empires, the Abbasid, down to a single kingdom and buckling under the Roman onslaught and the Ummayad Empire, sitting quietly in Spain, mostly fighting revolts and the odd norse raid
And India, as is visible on the map, is a mess
oh, and i just got this hilarious piece of news

you and what army? there arent any christians left ![]()

I hope the next dlc deals with late game boredom. I have an army bigger than Hispania and the Golden Horde combined, and I have more money than just about every country put together. Without any imminent danger I'm struggling to stay interested at this point.
As for my glorious empire, I now control all of the Mediterranean and my empire is finally connected together.

SO having tried both CK2+ and HIP, I think I give the edge to CK2+, it adds in a lot more relevant flavor like coronations and a better system for provincial bonuses than either vanilla or HIP and IMO better Coat of Arms for both dynasties and Nations, as well as a better managed intrigue tab
though it has a lack of TES references

First time I've seen Charles' price cut. Now, if only I can see that with Art of War in EU4...
Edit: Wait a second. The deal was 75 off before but when I got home, it's now only 33. Wut.
Note: At least Amazon is still has it low. Get it while you can.

Paradox has just signed with GOG so I was wondering if Crusader Kings was a good jumping in point for the publisher for someone new to the grand Strategy game series.

Sure. It's how I started. Though, it depends on taste since the other games play differently.
For instance, do you like roleplaying a single person or a nation? If the former, CK2 is for you.
