I started a new game as Saxony as in my first Francia got united very fast and I was in no way prepared for that invasion.. But now that I knew that I managed to prevent it.
I started sowing discontend in West Francia from the very start and focussed my council on raising an army, This resulted in a civil war in West Francia that created an independent Aquitaine and them losing the war against Middle-Francia. When WF then decided to declare war on me, they had a lot less armies and I had accumulated enough prestige to raise a big tribal army which resulted in:
After this I did not really had to worry too much about a Francian invasion so I focussed on expanding my territory by warring the small Slavic states, the warring Scandinavian tribes and making use of constant warring between West Francia, East Francia and Bavaria I managed to grab all holy sites and reform the Germanic faith
This resulted in a nice world state:
West-Francia finally managed to get Middle-Francia though they did not have a claim on Saxony anymore so they were not that big of a threat (plus I kept the sowing discontent going so they had A LOT of revolts).
The Byzanthines lost Anatolia to a Jihad while the muslims got Jerusalem back after losing it to a Crusade.
Lombady managed to grow a bit north but is losing the south to the Byzantines and the Pope isn't too happy with them since they converted to Fraticelli.
Meanwhile Ruthenia and Rus are almost in a constant war over dominance in Eastern Europe
Then, after my genius, homosexual father of 12 childern and leader of the Germanic faith died, the Pope decided to take advantage of the fact that I have gavelkind succession and thus lost 75% of my land..
Luckily, thanks to some quick fratricide, I got most of my land back together and managed to beat those filthy Catholics back
My next goal was founding my own Saxon Empire which is NOT easy while on gavelkind.. You need 180 realm size and after each death I have to get my old lands back..
But after grabbing most of Scandinavia, the Baltic States and some holy wars against the Catholics (West Francia fell apart in at least 7 countries) and I usurped East Francia. The remainder of West-Francia did not like this and declared a holy war against me, honestly believing they stood a chance against me after falling apart..
The Carolingian line getting smaller and smaller while the Saxon will rule Europe.
But when playing I stumbled upon some nice little bugs (atleast I think it's a bug)
When I grabbed enough lands to create a kingdom title, one of my kids automatically got a claim on it and became its heir even though I never actually created the title. I did not have it when alive but when I died, that kid suddenly became a king..
This was manageble however, since the king would be the brother of my current char and I would be first to inherit (fratricide was pretty common in those times..)
But now I am an Emperor I found something game breaking.. Under normal Gavelkind your first kid gets your first titles (so 1 empire, 1 kingdom, etc) but under Elective gavelkind it is impossible to make the same guy get both my Empire and Kingdom title. This means that when I die (and I have tested this) my main kingdom title (Kingdom of Saxony) where my personal lands are, becomes independent of me as Emperor of Saxony. I could work with this in another playthrough but in this one I want to remain tribal and never convert to feudalism. However, when I die, my Empire automacially becomes feudal since my new capital is a feudal holding instead of a tribal one..
Other than that, playing a tribal is pretty cool
At the start it can be hard and gavelkind succession sucks but once you can get your steward to increase your prestige and your priest to increase your piety and both have a chance to raise a pretty big army for you. Plus for every 500 prestige you can raise a 2500 man strong tribal army at any time, and as you might expect, this option becomes very OP, especially if you only use them for actions that earn you prestige like fighting battles and raiding.
