Okay home designers, professional and amateur, what colours should i paint my bathroom?  Here are the parameters:

Bathtub is Yellow  (Don't ask, no I am not removing it and buying another one.)

Small tiles in bathtub/shower areas currently an ugly dark green.  Walls are currently a light green.  I am planning on doing two tones of paint of the same basic colour.  The tiles and the cabinet door trim one shade and the walls another shade.  I may even split the walls in the middle and have one shade top another bottom.

What colours do you recommend I use that will go with a yellow tub?  (Remember one basic colour but two shades of that colour.)

Yellow + Light Grey

Dark Blue + Dark Grey

All cool colors not shiny screamy ones!

I'd go with blue walls and pictures of sailboats and lots of blue accessories. If you're a single male, then maybe some pictures of women playing beach volley ball. If you own instead of rent, I'd really think about getting rid of the yellow tub......

tub is about like this:

stock-footage-screen-fills-up-with-yello

tubs are not really expensive so getting a new tub is not the factor the factor is that the house is old and thus the plumbing has some funky things going on that will make it a huge pain to remove the old tub and install a new one.

Depends a lot on the light that is installed in the room as well.

At least it's a cheerful yellow. That might work with a beach party theme....

You could repaint the tub to open more options. You're gon' need a special type of paint, though.

Replace the green tile?

Tiles can be repainted easily.

Repainting the tub however is a different matter since it will be full off water every day. If not done professionaly it will start to peel off at some point making it look very bad.

Replace the green tile?

That is another option which I have thought of.  It might come to that.  Currently I'm trying to do it in the laziest way possible.  If I did retile it with some nice stone looking tiles I could paint the walls that light sand color suggested by SJpelke.

Redoing the tile work is always better than painting them oc.

Since there is a lot of work involved picking something more neutral for them gives you the possibility to change the look by repainting the walls and change everything that is not fixed. Tiles and sanitary are fixed parts in a bathroom. Anything else is easily changed without any mess.

Ballistic posted a colour which gives a big boost for towels or bath mat if you are into some bright colours to give accents.

What Naughty Bear said. But with the blood of your enemies.

Every time you walk in that bathroom you get the profound feeling of triumph as you get ready for the day.

Waiting to add even more color to your glorious bathroom walls.

I'd go with a soft yellow with white trim if the tub really is that bright of a yellow though.

Thanks for all the info and opinions.  I think I'll get off my butt and retile.  Off to the hardware store this weekend after taking some measurements to at least get a look at some real options.  I also have a shower downstairs in my house that has not been used for a long time so if I find I can tile the upstairs section I'll be able to eventually do the basement shower area.  (If I was going to be staying in this house long term I would probably hire a professional to do this stuff but there is a good chance I won;t be here any long then 3 more years at which time I'll be selling.)

I could tell you what I reckon would look good, but it's hard to make a good decision without actually seeing the bathroom.

If you keep the light green tiles, and the yellow tub, I suggest giving the shower walls a sky blue, and the rest of the bathroom walls a (pale?) orange colour.

Honestly, the yellow tub and light green tiles and dark green walls would probably look really kiddy, and unprofessional. Even if you got rid of the green tiles, but kept the yellow tub - which it sounds like you will - your only choices are pale colours. Light colours that don't clash, but some like pink would again, look kiddy, only girly as well. Without using dark colours, you're gonna end up having a pretty girly bathroom anyway (unless it's a very desaturated "colour").

You don't want the childish appearance, nor a blinding appearance. If you were to buy paint with the help of someone who works at the store, they're going to tell you the same sort of thing (unless they're idiots or douches).

I think, keep the yellow tub and the light green tiles, and give the bathroom a grass, sun and sky theme. Blue and orange are great contrasting colours that fit the concept of 'sky'. Daytime and sundown. Two examples of each, for whichever works best to you.

Either of these blue colours for the shower walls:

And either of these orange colours for the rest:

The blue and orange combination draws attention away from the fact that the bathtub has a bad colour, and gives the impression that the tub's colour was intentional. Hopefully it wouldn't seem crass.
