Bartha's Adventure:

Bartha leapt from her hiding place in and sprinted toward the ladder head, but someone was already there. The lean man with the longsword was long gone, but a thinner, evil looking human was on the ladder gazing up at her, one hand on the ladder and the other on his staff.

"Hello, poppet," he purred.

He climbed a step up the ladder, sweeping out with his quarterstaff like a scythe in an effort to knock her legs out from under her.

{Mahumia, check your PMs, the first part of this encounter, prior to the arrival of the party, won't follow the usual format.}

"Is it.. quite safe?" he asked quietly, peeking between his fingers. The last thing he wanted to do was be.. rude. See what shant be seen and whatnot. Thankful to see Rael beckoning and Laurelin completely dressed, he snatched up his staff and straightened out his doublet.

Time to go save a dwarf.

Etienne pursed his lips together and took off in a jog, only pausing long enough to grab Rael's hand and pull her along with him.

Tempest's shock at seeing an animal-to-human transformation wore off fairly quickly, and she decided she wasn't frightened after all. Of all the magics in the world, Laurelin's did not seem to have a high potential to harm anyone, so there was nothing to fear once she had gotten over merely being startled. It was actually... quite fascinating, really. At some other time - when they didn't have a comrade in mortal danger - Tempest would be interested in asking Laurelin more about her powers.

Another fear followed quickly on the heels of the first fear's departure, however. Mercuriel's words made her freeze up, her jaw clenching and her hands tightening on her staff. Tempest had no experience with sexually forward men that had not ended in assault, and she was terrified. Her whole body tensed, ready to defend Laurelin if necessary.

The necessity didn't come, fortunately, but her tension - instead of easing - merely increased when they received the relatively unsurprising news that Bartha was in danger.

Tempest took off at a run with the others. For a mage, she had a surprising degree of athleticism; she was strong from the physical labor it took to run a self-sufficient Circle, and one of her hobbies was dancing, so she was in shape and light on her feet.

As they ran, Tempest whispered a prayer that they would find Bartha alive and well.

‘Bronto balls!’ She came to a screeching halt when she noticed the man on the ladder and was just in time to jump up and avoid his quarterstaff. In her jump, she kicked her right foot forward, full into the man’s jaw. As a result, his head snapped backwards and he fell down the ladder.

Unfortunate enough, this alarmed the rest of the gang, who quickly gathered inside the mill. The two men who were also on the ledge were closing in, and the exit was blocked… she raised her daggers and made an inviting gesture with one hand, to taunt her attackers. “Come and get me… if you dare.”

The woman who she had earlier recognized as the leader looked at her and crossed her arms. She huffed at Bartha: “Seriously? Why don’t you just surrender… we might even be nice to you.” Bartha snorted and looked straight at her. “Yeah right… I’m not that dense. I won’t come quietly, so forget it.”

The leader tapped her arm with her fingers, before releasing an arm and making a ‘go on’ gesture to the rest of her crew. The slender man with the longsword approached her from the right. With some quick steps she managed to get out of reach as the man swung the sword at her. The gears limited her space severely, but she did stab him in his thigh before he could turn and have another go. She was just about to turn around to face the other person on the ledge, when she got a hard hit to the back of her head. Then she blacked out.

Laurelin got changed, way too quickly for Mercuriel's tastes, and Sarel's response to Mercuriel's remark made the Dalish elf wonder if Sarel took everything so literally without reading into the vocal inflection, intent, hidden meaning, etc.

Mercuriel was quickly reminded of the news that Laurelin had brought along with her shocking entry. Bartha, was that the dwarf he had caught passing glimpses of in their party?, was in trouble apparently. He quickly shifted into battle mode and focused on the possible threats the group would face.

He and Dog followed after the others, slowly gaining speed, and dashing up to the front of the group so as to protect the magic users if need arise.

Plot Post: Charge!

As you crest a low rise, you catch your first glimpse of the scene unfolding about a hundred yards distant. You see nine figures surrounding what looks to be a box of some sort. The smallest, a dwarf, sits on the box, supported by two large humans while a slimmer human slaps her face. The seated dwarf's braids gleam pale grey-white in the moonlight.

The second smallest person there, an elf by the build, pushes the human woman out of her way and holds something under the dwarf's chin. Steel catches the light.

At the moment, they seem to be completely unaware of your presence.

{At a dead run, your character can cover twice your Speed per round. Archers and spell casters, check your range. Everyone else: humans and elves will be within melee range in three rounds. Everyone please roll initiative. Initiative is an Ability Test: Dexterity(Initiative Focus) = 3d6+Dexterity+Focus(which none of you have).}

Link to Combat Spreadsheet.

Archer Initiative:

3d6+2 → [3,2,5,2] = (12)
3d6+2 → [6,3,2,2] = (13)
3d6+2 → [6,1,3,2] = (12)
3d6+2 → [2,2,1,2] = (7)

Longsword Initiative:
3d6+1 → [6,3,6,1] = (16)
3d6+1 → [5,5,3,1] = (14)

Axe Initiative:
3d6+1 → [1,3,6,1] = (11)

Leader Initiative:
3d6+2 → [3,1,2,2] = (8)

Beldin Initiative=11(6)

Beldin sprints toward the figures. He doesn't yell or make excess noise, but he isn't worried about stealth at this point. Like all melee combatants, he will be able to attack in Round 4.

Tessa's Initiative Roll (hidden out of shame):

As she's already running, she continues on toward the folks. She isn't yelling or trying to be quiet. She's just trying to get there.

Edited to add: If you wanna do something with that natural gorramed 3, berelinde, feel free. :P

{I wasn't going to do anything about that roll, Bramble, but since you mention it...}

Tessa looses her footing on wet grass and stumbles, but she loses no more than a few yards. She will arrive at the same time as everyone else.

Raek's initiative is 14. She will be running until she is within long range (60 yds) then readying and loading her crossbow. I assume that's two rounds, right?

{I failed math, apparently. I was going on a base movement rate of 15, not the average 12. But done is done. Rael can attack in Round 3, as she will need to load her crossbow in Round 2.}

Etienne's initiative is 12. He'll be sprinting until he sees Tessa fall, then will quickly offer her a hand to help her back to her feet. (Also, FYI, he's going to be holding his action till the end of the combat round since obviously no one needs healing yet.)

3d6+1 → [1,4,6,1] = (12) http://invisiblecast...r/view/4638916/

(EDITED because Tessa doesn't have man feet. O.o)

Laurelin's initiative is 10.Despite being partly unable to feel her feet from the cold, Laurelin isn't slowed down,she'll be sprinting until she's within range to cast arcane lance.

3d6+1 → [1,3,5,1] = (10)

Sarel's Initiative is 18, his standard speed is 15
3d6+3
[6,3,6,3] = (18)

Sarel starts running as soon as he sees the bandits, moving at double base speed til he gets about 19 feet away from one of them, then casts Winter's Grasp.

He makes sure to put himself between where he thinks Etienne and Rael are.

(Tempest's initiative roll is 15. 3d6+1=15)

What they saw as they crested the low rise caused Tempest to draw in her breath in anger and shock. A dwarf-sized figure - she assumed Bartha, although it was hard to tell at this distance - was being mistreated and threatened by a group of thugs. Although Tempest didn't quite understand why Bartha had chosen to accuse Beldin, she didn't think their dwarf companion deserved this sort of abuse.

How to handle the situation might be a complicated matter. If they just attacked without strategy, it would be easy for the knife-wielder to simply slit Bartha's throat, defeating the whole purpose of the rescue. Tempest had her staff in hand and began readying a spell, as she frantically thought through exactly what to do.

{I'm just going to post this. Dog owners can post their dog's initiative when they post their actions for Round 3. This is Round 3.

The party is 30 yards distant. Silence is rapidly becoming impossible. Rael is in range. Melee combatants are closing fast. Spell casters may or may not be within range. Check your ranges, because I will.}

Sarel stopped running as he neared the enemies. he moved about about 11 feet closer, and asked Fen'Harel, "You ready, boy? Stay by me!" There are too many enemies to send him in yet. Wait until one gets closer, Sarel. He reached out with his free hand, and as the magic flowed through his hand, an icy cloud formed around the nearest Bandit.

Fen'Harel's Initiative: 14

{Sarel's spellpower is 14 (Magic + 10). It's the spell's Target Number that's 12. They aren't really related. Sarel's opponent will have to make an opposition roll versus Sarel's spellpower, however. If he succeeds, he suffers the damage. If he fails, he suffers the damage this round and will have to roll again next round or continue to suffer the damage until he passes.}

As Sarel's spell lands, the bandits suddenly become aware of the party. They turn and see you. Their archers aim, their melee combatants charge. If the party can move and attack in the same round, so can they.

Keep going with the party attacks. The bandits will get theirs in, but I won't be able to post them until I'm home, much later. Unless somebody gets an instant kill, it won't matter that much.

Bartha squirmed, trying to get free from the grasp of the two men who were holding her on top of the chest... but to no avail. The elf had moved just out of range from her legs, so she wouldn't be able to kick her again. However, the bandit leader was still standing there... She bended her knees and attempted to kick Marl with both feet in the lower abdomen. One foot missed, but the other hit the bandit full in the stomach. The woman groaned and partially collapsed from the pain. Bartha braced herself for the punishment she was expecting to follow for her actions.

{Bartha does 4 3 damage to Marl and assumes a defensive stance (as far as possible) }

Rael does 8 damage to a bandit

As the others sprinted past her, Rael stopped short, just within crossbow range. Her heart was pounding in her chest, but her hands were steady as she loaded a bolt. The bandits were still unaware of their presence, though that would end shortly.

Two of the thugs were holding Bartha down, keeping her from running or defending herself. Muttering a curse under her breath, Rael took strong aim at one of the armored bandits, the one who seemed like the greatest immediate danger to their friend.

A cloud of frost emanated from Sarel's hand as he rushed past her, and she could see that the subterfuge was over. Without another thought, Rael pulled the trigger and released the bolt at her target. It sung as it flew through the air and impaled the thug in the abdomen. An agonized screech told her that her shot was true.

{Yup. Rael's attack didn't generate any stunt points, so her next attack will occur in Round 5.

I'm checking the links and updating the spreadsheet now. After that, I'll deal with opposition rolls.}

{Bartha, Brawling is a dexterity focus that all characters get for free, so Bartha may apply both her dexterity and the focus to the attack, which you've already done, so good, but you forgot to add your strength score to the attack and to deduct Marl's armor rating.

2(damage roll) +2 (mighty blow) + 2 (Strength) - 3 (Armor Rating) = 3. Bartha does 3 points damage to Marl.}
