Longsword 2

Summary: Longsword 2 strikes Beldin's head for 9 points

The man with the longsword closed the distance and feinted, drawing Beldin’s attention to his left. Instantly the attacker swung his sword in a mighty arc, landing against the back of Beldin’s head with a terrible cracking sound. The blade he drew back was covered in blood.

Spoiler

Beldin lurched away from the blow, but the damage was done. From the moment he opened his mouth, he knew that he was only buying time. There were too many enemies with no target but him, and he had called the Maker's own wrath upon himself. He knew he would have to pay the price for his arrogance. He just thought it might take a little longer to come due.

Archer 2

Summary: The mage tries to cast a spell and it fizzles.

The mage near Sarel spread her hands as an eerie incantation erupted from her lips. Her fingertips glowed a pale green as she focused her attention on Beldin, who staggered from the last hit. As she pointed her hands at him, a shout from one of her comrades startled her. The green glow immediately shattered around her hand and she cursed in frustration.

Rael watched in horror as fighters and arrows swarmed Beldin and knew he would not last much longer under such attacks. Maker, let him not avoid one death to meet another here, she thought as she feverishly reloaded her crossbow.

The arrow protruding from his shoulder didn't slow Mercuriel down at all. He pushed through the searing pain spreading throughout the right side of his body and advanced. The enemies had converged on top of Beldin and it seemed they all were too focused on him to pay further heed to Mercuriel and Dog. It was a mistake they would soon regret.

Dog and Mercuriel both turned their attention on the axe-wielding man that seemed intent on ending Beldin's life. Dog rushed ahead of Mercuriel and got in close, clamping his teeth down on the enemy's leg. Dog broke skin and a guttural growl emptied from his mouth. Mercuriel soon joined Dog in the fray. He confronted the man with his sword, concentrated all his energy and channeled it into his attack for massive damage (Might Blow, adding another 5 damage points).

Mercuriel followed up his attack by lashing out at the closest long-sword wielding enemy. His greatsword made a beautiful arc through the air before biting into the enemy's arm. Flecks of blood flew onto the blade and spattered into tiny droplets across Mercuriel's face.

Dog let go of the axe-wielder's leg and rushed back over to his master's side. He let loose a howl midst the sounds of battle and chaos, ready to answer Mercuriel's next call to action.

(This is my first time doing combat so if I messed something up please let me know. I appreciate it! Here are all my rolls for both Dog and Mercuriel:

Dog: Attack Roll = 3d6+4 Damage = 1d6+1

3d6+4 → [4,5,1,4] = (14)

http://invisiblecast...r/view/4650224/

1d6+1 → [3,1] = (4)

http://invisiblecast...r/view/4650226/

Mercuriel: Attack Roll = 3d6+5 Damage = 3d6+3

3d6+5 → [6,6,4,5] = (21)

http://invisiblecast...r/view/4650227/

3d6+3 → [4,3,1,3] = (11)

http://invisiblecast...r/view/4650228/

Mighty Blow damage

1d6 → [5] = (5)

http://invisiblecast...r/view/4650267/

Dog does 1 damage and Mercuriel does 13 damage to Bors,

Mercuriel does 8 damage to Long sword 2 as well

Thanks for the advice, Ruth!)

{Merc, you've got 6 stunt points. May I recommend Dual Strike and Mighty Blow? You can get Longsword 2 with that Dual Strike, and Mighty Blow against Bors would be really handy. You don't have to worry about the Dual Strike rolls. That applies your original rolls to a second target. You would only need to roll 1d6 for extra Mighty Blow damage. :)}

Archer 3

Summary: Archer 3 hits Etienne in the neck for 9 points.

Though Etienne seemed unobtrusive and firmly planted in the background, the gold light that emanated from his hand drew the ire of one of the archers. The archer leveled his longbow at the mage and let loose his arrow. It flew nearly silently in the air and found its target in the side of Etienne’s neck.

{Sorry, Etienne, that +2 to defense from Mana Shield was just (barely) not enough. :(}

Archer 1:

Summary: Archer 1 misses Beldin

Beldin was an easy target, but luckily, not a stationary one. Another archer who looked to quickly pick him off was disappointed as his arrow whizzed by Beldin’s shoulder.

((Chachi asked me to post for her))

Etienne heals Sarel for 13 points

Etienne shrieked as the arrow pierced the tender flesh on the side of his neck. His hand flew up to the wound instinctively and he clutched it to staunch the blood that oozed through his fingers. His first impulse was to heal himself, but then he saw Sarel staggering in a cloud of ice, drained of color and in dire straits. Without aid, the mage would surely fall and Etienne wasn't about to let that happen, injured or not.

Fighting against pain and panic, he whispered a prayer as golden sparks traveled from his fingers to Sarel's freezing back.

Beldin hits Axe(Bors) for 11 points

Beldin's head swam from the head shot. He swayed on his feet, but he forced himself to concentrate. That axe his opponent held would not give him time to get his bearings. He swung wide, gaining momentum, and tore a deep gash across the axe wielder's arm.

Axe(Bors)

Summary: Bors hits Beldin in the side for 12 points. Beldin falls to the ground, unconscious.

Flanking the large warrior, Bors delivered a savage blow to Beldin’s side, cackling as the wound gushed blood.

Exhaustion exacted its toll on Beldin. His eyes focused sluggishly, and his limbs were leaden. He tried to block the windmill shot coming in from his side, but he could not raise his axe fast enough to deflect it.

Everyone's got to be right handed, he thought even as he dropped to his knees, his legs no longer able to support him.

He felt no panic as the ground rushed up to meet his face, only the crackling frost on the grass against his cheek.

Harlan was right. There would be frost tonight.

He mustered the little strength that remained and rolled onto his back. The moon shone calmly overhead, its soft, gentle light bathing him as his blood seeped into the earth. Images formed in his mind, smiles of friends, the feel of the wind against his face as hooves pounded beneath him, the otherworldly stillness of the forest as he walked a long last patrol. The softness of a cheek as his thumb stroked it.

And then, he saw no more.

Laurelin tried to keep her eyes open,in a desperate attempt to remain conscious and alert.
The situation demanded her to be on guard, not to lay flat on the ground.
But most importantly,it demanded her to assist her comrades,in what appeared to be a challenging battle.
Therefore she stood, rather abruptly but still retaining her grace at the same time. Her grip around her staff was gentle yet firm,a look of determination in her eyes.Determination turning to anger, however she didn't know whether she was angry with her enemies or herself, and she had plenty of reasons to be with both.
Laurelin lifted her staff in the air, aiming at the same archer she did before, suddenly a cloud of frost surrounded her and her wooden staff, the fractals that were forming sparkling under the moonlight.
3d6+3 → [3,3,6,3] = (15)(success)

Suddenly, she didn't feel that cold anymore, hopefully she wouldn't have to say the same for her target.(archer 3)

Laurelin successfully casts winter grasp at archer 3,for 8 pts damage.

{Alright, I let Sarel do it, so I'm going to let Laurelin do it, too, but eventually, we're going to have to decide as a group if preparing to cast a spell is a minor action. I have always played that it is, but none of the spellcasters seem to be treating it that way. I realize that Dungeons & Dragons 4th Edition allows casters to cast spells and do other things that round, but I've never played it, and no previous editions allowed it, nor have any other gaming systems I've used.

The middle of combat isn't really the time to work out house rules, so let's table the discussion until combat is over and we can all work it out in a discussion thread. I'd like to hear everybody's input about this, not just the casters. It really doesn't matter to me which way we do it, but whichever way you choose, enemy mages will be following the same rules. :)

For the time being, we'll assume that casters may take a minor action and cast that round, since that seems to be the way it's working out this combat.}

EDIT: Laurelin, your spell generated 3 spell stunt points. If it were me, I'd pick 3 points in Puissant Casting, which raises the target number of the opposition roll to 17. That's a hard roll to beat. :)

Winter's Grasp actually does 1d6 per round, but I can adjust that on my end.

Please, don't you or anyone else stress if you don't catch every little detail in your post. We're all still learning, and even once we're experts, we're all going to forget things. Even (especially) me.

Windmill Leader

Summary: Marl hits Mercuriel in the head/neck for 8 points

Mercuriel’s spinning blade and blood-flecked face certainly caught Marl’s attention, as she pivoted from Tessa to the elf that had made such a showy attack. Mercuriel’s attention was focused on Bors and Marl took advantage of his diverted attention to swing her blade and slash the warrior’s temple in a deep gash.

Windmill Archer 4

Summary: Archer 4 hits Mercuriel in the right thigh for 10 points

Seeing his leader change her target inspired the archer to do the same. He let his arrow fly towards Mercuriel, who was still reacting to the last blow. It penetrated the elf’s armor, embedding itself deep in his right thigh.

(Oh no, hope someone can heal Merc! Are these bad guys going to do us all in? lol Seems like it!)

Mercuriel was beginning to regret his flashy display. He'd garnered the attention of two enemies and now suffered severe injuries because of them. Another arrow protruded out of his body, his right thigh to be exact, and he'd acquired a deep gash across his forehead. He felt his body give out for just a moment, landing on one knee, before he pushed himself back up and removed both arrows from his body. He hollered in pain as he wrenched the arrows free and tossed them on the ground.

Blood started flowing out of his wounds and Dog whimpered at the sorry sight of his master.

Summary: In Which Tempest Heals Beldin while Tessa Politely Tells Bors to Shove Off

Tessa looked over just as Beldin was felled to his knees by a giant axe. Her breath caught in horror as he fell forward on his face, seemingly lifeless. The man wielding the axe grunted and turned to look for his next target.

‘Beldin, you ASS!’ she thought viciously as she swung around to see where her mages were. Sarel had his own Maker-damned hands full, so Tess swiveled around until her eyes lit on Tempest.  Perfect.

She looked back at Beldin’s fallen form. How in the Maker’s name was she going to keep Tempest safe enough to get that colossal ass on his feet again?

Hefting her sword with both hands like it was a big club, she bellowed, “TEMPEST! TO ME!” and ran towards the bastard standing over Beldin, fully intending to keep him busy enough to ignore Tempest long enough for her to do what she could.

Tempest glanced over at the sound of Tessa's voice, and saw that Beldin had fallen. The breath in his body still rose and fell, so she knew he wasn't at the Maker's side quite yet, but from the looks of it he soon would be if someone didn't heal him fast.

"I'm coming!" she called, picking her way as quickly as she could the short distance toward where Beldin lay. An injured man and the mage attempting to heal him would make an easy target to pick off, so she knew she needed to be careful.

Tempest wasn't going to let Beldin die. Not only was she a healer, but he was her friend. It hadn't escaped her that Tessa was the one to call for her , and the possible implications of that, but there would be time to encourage love to blossom once they were no longer fighting for their lives.

Tessa leapt over Beldin’s fallen form to put herself between him and the man with the axe as Tempest knelt beside their fallen friend.  She spared a moment to think, ‘Maker, let us not be too late,’ then on the heels of that thought, 'Beldin, you ASS!’ before channeling her fear and rage into her swing.

Shouting incoherently, Tessa brought her great sword around, almost side arm with every ounce of strength and momentum she had.  As her blade sank into flesh, she met the resistance of his spine.  With a feral grunt, Tessa pushed through the bone and onward, planting her feet as her sword came through the man’s body so that her momentum did not turn her around.

Bringing her sword down, she met the man’s eyes as his brain slowly realized what his body already knew.

As the man’s torso fell, still clutching his great axe in one hand, his legs fell separately, and Tessa sent up a silent prayer, almost automatically. ‘Maker, lead his soul to Your side’ before readying her weapon to protect Tempest and Beldin while Tempest worked.

Spoiler

Tempest knelt by Beldin, her brow furrowed with worry, trusting Tessa to watch her back while she tended their fallen comrade. Warm blue light flowed from her hand into his battered body, and she murmured, "Don't die. You are still needed, my friend." They weren't going to lose Beldin tonight either by trial or by combat if Tempest had anything to say about it.

(Tempest casts a Heal spell on Beldin. 3d6+3=16 (TN 10.) She expends three mana points and heals him for thirteen HP. 3d6=13)
Spoiler

The impenetrable darkness that blinded Beldin lifted. He had been exploring the long-unused galleries of Tor Adley, and had fallen through the floor into an unused cellar. He'd struck his head and blacked out, and awoke cold and nauseous and alone. A warm hand cradled his cheek and told him not to be afraid. His mother stood over him, a dark scarf draped around her hair, her expression gentle, but anxious. He reached out and took her hand.

"Mother..." he breathed, his voice thick with love and relief.

Tempest smiled, seeing Beldin had regained consciousness. It strangely pleased her that he called her "mother," even though she knew he was dreaming. If he saw her presence as maternal, comforting, and warm, then surely that was a compliment. "You'll be alright," she told him, giving his hand a gentle squeeze.

It was clear to Tempest that Beldin was far from fully healed. At least he was aware again and a little further from the brink. She would either heal him again, or heal someone else who needed it more.

But tht Puissant Casting wasn't wasted. He's going to have to roll a save every round until he dies or the spell wears off. Your Puissant Casting pretty much ensures that he will never pass it.

{Brian, I've been operating under the assumption that Sarel cast Rock Armor on the way out the door, and I've been applying it to the last few rounds' worth of attacks. If you would like to apply that Casting Roll to a different spell (don't forget to use those 5 stunt points!), I will allow it. In the future, I'm going to ask you to specify when you're casting Rock Armor, but we're all still learning, and the other players have have had more in-game combat practice than you or Ann, so I'm going to allow you two the occasional do-over, just as I allowed everyone during the wolf attacks.

If you would like to choose a different spell, I'm going to allow it, but I don't want to hold up combat while you choose. Longsword 1 is out of Bartha's range anyway, so her going won't affect things much. Longsword 1 will make an attack. If you choose a spell that kills him, then his attack may be struck from the record. ;)

So, Longsword 1 goes next, then Bartha, then Dog (although that will probably be applied retroactively, since Ann probably won't post Dog's attack until she posts Merc's), and then Longsword 2 and Rael.}

Bartha cursed under her breath as the man with the sword had practically ignored her and ran off to annoy Beldin instead. "I didn't hurt my knuckles for fun, you idiot!" She yells after him, although she is quite aware that he wouldn't pay attention anyway. Much to her dismay, she saw Beldin fall down headfirst. Shocked, she stood there for a few moments. 'No! He can't just die here...' She could resist the urge to ran over to him when Tessa and Tempest hurried over to help. 'I need to buy them time...' She turned around, facing the ranged bandits. 'No more playing nice...' She runs over to the closest one: an archer who still has her bow on her back. The elf was apparently too busy with paying attention to Beldin, so didn't notice Bartha until the dwarf had appeared behind her and pulled the elf to the ground by hanging on her cloak. The dwarfs hands grasped the edges of the cloak and pulled it tight around the elf's neck.

{Bartha attacks archer 2, knocks her prone and tries to choke her. If applicable, she does 8 damage}
