Laurelin placed the link in her pocket once more, carefully wrapping it in a handkerchief. It was then when she felt a pair of strong hands embracing her,it was no one else but Mercuriel's.
She gasped, when he leaned closer to her face and whispered in her ear, what appeared to be an apology.Again he managed to caught her off guard, how did he manage this every single time? And why in Dirthamen's name did he also smell so nice!As much as she didn't feel like breaking away from his warm embrace,Laurelin couldn't help but remember the scene that took place between him and Tessa.
She knew that he was probably being his flirty self, but it still didn't sit well with her.
"I...I also care about you..."She said calmly "Despite the fact that you insist on toying with me."she added trying unsuccessfully to avoid sounding too bitter,or too jealous "And what is that about meeting you in your room. You want to speak to me in private?"she asked furrowing her brow in confusion.
Laurelin was surprised when he mentioned that he wanted to check on Bartha, but she doubted that she was in any danger for the moment being, besides she could handle herself well.
"I think Bartha is fine, besides I need to check the library for information,we will speak again later in your chambers."Her golden eyes fixed on his,she was curious about what he had to say to her
"If she's in any kind of danger though, please let me know."Laurelin said and left the room. She had many things to do But first she needed a
warm,relaxing bath,it's been a long night indeed.

"Thank you for telling me," she said. "And we'll look after... I suppose you're going to need a new name, aren't you, boy? How does Fern sound? Will that do?"

A stubby tail thumped happily against the floor.

"Fern it is then," she said, stroking his ears. "Are there any injured among you? I know that you've got Eshara there, but I made up a batch of poultices this evening. Would you take some as thanks for bringing me the news?"

"Thank you, Kesla, I hadn't considered that," Rael replied to the woman's suggestion of Dalish rites. Rael had no idea what those might be, but asking Eshara in the morning seemed the best course of action.

"I'd be happy to take some poultices back to the manor," she continued. "It's kind of you to offer."

A few minutes later, a basket of poultices in hand, Rael stepped outside of the crowded Inn.

He watched Laurelin walk out of the room. Had she just distanced herself from him? She seemed in a hurry to get away from him even though she promised to stop by his room later on. He mulled over what she had said. She cared about him, that wasn't too much of a surprise considering her reactions to his attentions. And she didn't like that he toyed with her. That second statement was understandable considering he'd heard it from other women before. His flirting had gotten him in trouble more times than he could count but he usually got out of it using his deft charisma. Perhaps simply flirting with Laurelin wouldn't cut it. He would have to show her a more serious side.

Then again, was he ready to be serious about anyone? He barely knew Laurelin, despite going through some trying experiences together, and he wanted to bed her, that was for sure, but to start a relationship or tame his flirtatious side wasn't something he saw happening any time soon. He sighed. Why did women make everything so much more complicated?

Despite Laurelin's objections to how safe Bartha was, Mercuriel made his way to her room and rapped lightly against the door. She might be asleep already. He pressed his pointed ear against the door and tried to hear if another person was inside. He probably looked ridiculous standing there, spying on the dwarf, but he had to find out if one of the newcomers had tried anything.

"Bartha, it's me, Mercuriel. Are you available for a moment? Just wanted to check in with you before resting."

It was probably unnecessary - foolish, even - but I left nothing at my former master's abode. I grabbed pack, bedding, clothing (even a set for Ser Ox, stolen from Coalan), tools, a cloak, provisions, even the small traveling anvil, until my arms bulged with my possessions. Some, I would have to leave behind. I could not carry an anvil with me, no matter how light, but other things, I would not be parted from. Death would take me before I left my tent. Daytime alliances are what they are, but a man's rest is a different matter. But perhaps I might coax another to share it one day, if the Maker willed it... and if she were worth it. Sleep remains the most precious of commodities.

My arms thus laden, I nearly overran the lithe elf leaving the Arbor.

"I know you!" I said with appalling bluntness. "The lady passing out the silver at our patron's. Will you allow me to escort you the... three paces... to our host's doorstep? I would call it an honor."

In truth, I knew nothing of her, yet she was soon to become my companion by my own design. It cost me nothing to be nice.

Bartha had removed her boots and her tunic, and got distracting from further changing out of her clothes by the brooch laying on the side table. The light of the candle by her bed seemed to playing with the blue crystals, making them shine like stars. She picked up the piece of jewelry and admired it again. ‘It truly is a fine piece of craftsmanship… I’ve never seen anything like this. This is not the regular bauble like they sell on the markets here.’

Again there was a tapping at her door, followed by a male voice: "Bartha, it's me, Mercuriel. Are you available for a moment? Just wanted to check in with you before resting."

‘Mercuriel? What would he come for, at this hour?’ She sighed before walking over to the door and opening it. “What can I do for you, Mercuriel? Is there something wrong with Laurelin?”

As soon as the door opened Mercuriel quickly flashed his charming smile and noticed the state of undress the dwarf was in. Apparently he'd caught her just before going to bed. Or at least he HOPED she'd been preparing for bed. He quickly scanned what he could see of the room for anything suspicious.

"I apologize for the lateness of the hour and for the interruption of clothing removal. I approve by the way," he winked shamelessly at Bartha before moving on to the matter at hand. "Anyways, I came back to the large room where everyone had gathered to find you and one of the newcomers absent. I just wondered if the newcomer had come and bothered you. I wanted to make sure you were safe seeing as we know very little about either of them."

He met her eyes and laughed softly, "Laurelin is fine by the way." The next part he whispered under his breath, "Except for the part about making my life difficult." He continued then at normal volume, "And though I expressed my concerns about you she seemed to think you could very well handle yourself and therefore didn't need the two of us."

He looked down at the floor before meeting eyes with Bartha again. "Laurelin was right, wasn't she? I'm just interrupting your alone time, aren't I?" He said the last part a bit loudly to reinforce his feelings on the subject to whoever might be hiding in the room, if there was anyone.

Bartha crossed her arms. “Hang on, are you now going to tell me whether or not I can invite someone into my room? Don’t you know I have to test newcomers to ensure they fit into the group?” She did her very best to keep her face straight. “Fair enough, I have a bit of a backlog at the moment…”

She failed keeping her cool and burst out into laughing. When she got herself collected again, she proceeded: “Alright, alright… Mercuriel, I really appreciate your concern. It is heartwarming to know you do care about my safety, especially as I am, indeed, without weapons at the moment. Would you have come a few minutes earlier though, you would have found that I had a late guest indeed. However, bothering is not the right description, as he turned out to be enjoyable company. But, if you want to be sure that I spend the night alone… feel free to check my room.” She opened the door wide enough for Mercuriel to come in, if he wished to do so. “Or if you prefer to bring your own company, you may invite Laurelin too. Just for safety measures, of course.” She chuckled the last bit.

Rael looked up from her basket with a start. The man who joined them on the hilltop--Fabian, was it?--had appeared from nowhere and addressed her. She must have been lost in her own thoughts to allow him to entirely escape her notice. Yet, there he was only a few paces from her, and carrying every article he owned, it seemed, as all of the metal practically clanged together.

She smiled at him, though it was somewhat pained, and replied, "You do know me, serah, though only in the briefest sense." She gestured with her free hand towards the door. "After you," she said with a more genuine smile. "And please call me Rael. Addressing all of us by epithets will get tiresome quickly."

Laurelin dried herself with a warm cotton towel and changed into her clean garments, the fabric felt abit rough against her skin,in contrast with the soft warm furs on her pauldrons. It was time for her to browse the library, who knows maybe she could find something about these creatures, that both Eshara and the newcomer Rhys mentioned.

She quietly made her way to the library and started to look through the shelves, what caught her attention however, was a book that she found in the "circle of magi" section. She shuddered when she noticed that she was actually browsing through this particular shelf, but still that book appeared to be a spell.Laurelin lost her self into it's pages where it analysed a very impressive method of knocking one's enemies down,by invoking a magical rock, something like a stone fist.

She didn't know whether it was lack of concentration or the fact that she didn't have much time to browse thoroughly the warden's enormous library, but Laurelin didn't manage to find anything about the revengers.

Besides she couldn't stop thinking about what Mercuriel wanted to discuss with her.Hesitantly she left the library, but instead of her chambers she made her way towards his.

For a moment she found her decision to speak with him at this hour, all alone in his room a bit too bold for her taste...Maybe a bit inappropriate as well  one could admit, but as always her curiosity got the best of her.She knew that she wouldn't be able to sleep unless she heard what he had to say.

Shyly she knocked on his door "Mercuriel,it's me Laurelin..."She nervously ran her hand through her dark, wavy, oddly enough unbraided hair, and bit her lip at her own stupidity.Of course he knew who it was!Creators,it was certainly a bad idea for her to be there. After a moment of silence she decided to leave, perhaps he didn't want to speak with her after what happened between them.

Tempest also adjourned to her room when she'd bid Rael goodnight. She was starting to feel her tiredness now, and she wanted to get a good night's sleep before they set out in the morning. It might be awhile till they got another chance to sleep in such safety. Tempest read a few more chapters of her borrowed book, then blew out her lamp and pulled up the covers.

Sleep was nice in theory, but in practice it wasn't an easy thing for Tempest. Almost immediately, the nightmares began. To begin with, she dreamed of demons, the monsters she had witnessed preying on mages in Kirkwall, but this time with knives for hands. As the dream progressed, though, the villain became all too human...

"No!" Tempest cried out in her sleep. "No, please, don't!"

The sound of her own voice woke her up. Tempest was caught in her tangled sheets, holding up her hands to ward off an imagined foe. Her cheeks were wet with tears, and her breath came in loud, ragged gasps. For a moment her eyes searched the darkness in confusion. Where was she? Then her gaze fell on her blue scarf tied on the bedpost, her signal to herself that she was safe.

Tempest pressed a pillow to her mouth to stifle the sound of her sobs, although it was rather too late to worry about keeping quiet. She only hoped the walls were thick enough that she hadn't woken Tarl and Eshara.

This was why she would always sleep alone. Well, it was among the reasons.

When she had calmed down, Tempest rolled over on her side, pulled the blankets around herself, and drifted off again.

Mercuriel had yet to see this side of Bartha. She was rather easy-going and funny. He liked it a lot. He made a mental note to talk more with the dwarf in the near future. For now, he realized that he'd overreacted and it was time to give the dwarf her space for the night.

"Thanks for the invite into your room. However, as tempted as I am to enter, I think I've confirmed your safety for the night. I will let you sleep." He reached out a hand and ruffled Bartha's hair. "At least I got a better look at your figure. Now I can have some good dreams." He chuckled, jokingly bowed to her and made his way back to his room.

As he neared his room, he saw Laurelin at his door. So she had come after all. He rushed forward to make sure she didn't leave before he could invite her in. "Laurelin! Wait, please," he opened the door and motioned inside, "let's talk for a moment, in private."

Bartha chuckled: "Well than, have yourself some good dreams. If I would find someone astray in my room, I'll just give a shout." She winked when Mercuriel made his bow and closed the door when he turned to leave.

She quickly proceeded with removing the rest of her clothes and slipped between the sheets. The confirmation that they even came to check upon her to be sure that she was fine, put a smile on her face.

Mercuriel woke up several times during the night. Once to remove all his bulky armor, which he had forgotten about during his emotional confrontation with Laurelin, and twice to answer the door and allow Dog in. The mabari wasn't too happy about being left alone. Luckily Dog's unhappiness quickly disappeared as soon as he saw his master's pained expression. Almost as if he could read Mercuriel's mind, Dog climbed into bed with his master and snuggled next to him for the rest of the night. Dog's presence helped calm Mercuriel's mind and heart. Finally the Dalish elf drifted off into a deep slumber that wasn't plagued by nightmares of the past.

The next morning, Mercuriel rolled out of bed, woke Dog up to which he got a large tongue in his face as an answer, and proceeded to redress in his armor. He picked up his new greatsword from the corner of the room, placed it on his back, and headed out of his room to meet the rest of the crew.

To say that he dreaded seeing Laurelin again after last night would be an understatement. He didn't know how to act around her now, he assumed she didn't know with him either, and the rest of their group would be sure to notice a change in time. Great, just what he needed on this journey. He sighed, patted Dog's head for comfort, and turned a corner while still so deep in thought that he almost mowed Tessa down. Of course, Tessa's size prevented her from being mowed down so, in reality, all that happened was Mercuriel smacked into Tessa.

"Agh! Good morning to you, my lady!" Mercuriel grinned sheepishly and backed up a few paces. Dog looked at him curiously before greeting Tessa with a bark and a quick lick to the hand.

Rael rose later than she'd expected, but a late night all but trapped her in the soft bed until she could fully rouse herself. She dressed and prepared herself quietly and made her way to the main hall. The smell of warm food was enough to stir her further and she took a serving of porridge, eating quietly by herself as the others filtered into the hall.

Rhys strode back into the warden's home, his light blond hair darkened with wetness and the shoulders of his shirt damp.  Following his nose he found the main hall.  He smiled widely and raised a hand in greeting to those in the room before retrieving a bowl of porridge, sprinkling a helping of dried fruit into the bowl.  He leaned against the wall out of the way, his backpack at his feet and quarterstaff and longbow leaning against the wall next to him and proceeded to eat his breakfast fastidiously.

He should feel nervous at the thought of going after and confronting the creatures that had killed his mercenary companions; if he was honest with himself there was a part of him putting forth the argument that he was crazy for even thinking about it.  But Tessa would be going after these creatures and that stubborn woman never gave in to common sense when her dander was up.  The rest of these people were probably capable in their own ways; Tessa didn't usually associate with incompetents.  All in all, he felt optimistic.  And excited.  So he was probably crazy.

He waited quietly for the rest of the group to show up.  He had a feeling that he hadn't made a very good first impression the night before; he would need to rectify that if they were going to let him go hunting with them.

Or he'd just have to go out there alone.

Tempest was able to get a fairly good night's sleep once her nightmare had passed - as least as good as a night's sleep ever got for her. She dressed, washed her face and hands, then knelt to say her morning prayers. Tempest implored the Maker especially fervently for the safety of their expedition and the safety of her family back home. She believed the word of the Chantry that the Maker was gone from their world... but she believed He still listened. She believed He still cared, and that He would look with favor on those endeavoring to do His will.

It didn't take long for Tempest to pack her things. She was traveling lightly. The biggest item was her small tent - a necessary thing, since they couldn't expect to find a convenient friendly manor every time they stopped. She carefully wrapped her borrowed book to ensure no harm would come to it.

Once she was ready, she joined the others for breakfast. Tempest exchanged friendly greetings with any comrades she ran into, but was primarily focused on making sure she was sufficiently nourished for a long day's walk.

When they had all gathered, Tempest hesitantly addressed the full group. She was not used to being the center of attention... but this was important.

"I want to warn you about something Eshara warned me about," she said. "The wounds inflicted by these creatures are corrupted with some sort of dark magic. Thus the wounds are slow to respond to both magical and conventional healing. This is why Eshara remained so ill. When we fight, we must be careful. If one of us is wounded, a simple healing spell may not be sufficient, especially if time has passed. We must not risk taking any damage that is not absolutely necessary."

Easier said than done in a fight, but at least her comrades would know not to attempt any heroics that relied on a quick magical fix to injuries incurred.

Bartha woke up to the increasing hustle of people waking up and preparing for the day. With a sigh she sunk a bit deeper into the blankets. ‘They should invent a foldable bed… way better to sleep in than some bedroll.’ The prospect of laying shivering in some cold tent made her even less eager to leave the warm, soft bed. As if to tease her, she noticed that her bladder started to protest. With a sigh, she slipped out of the bed. ‘Fine fine… if I have to.’

She’d picked some clean clothes from her backpack and adjusted her armor. Putting on the belt with the empty sheaths for her daggers felt a bit strange. She made a mental note to talk to Tarl about the weapons… otherwise she’d have to pay a visit to the smith before leaving.

After brushing her hair she braided it. She glanced at the jewelry she had been gifted during the night, pondering whether she should put it in her hair or not. ‘Ah, why not… it had been a gift after all.’ With a bit of fiddling she found a nice spot for wearing the broche, on the left side of her head.

On her way to the courtroom she had stumbled into Tessa. With a worse mood than before, she continued her way after their conversation. Silently she grabbed herself some porridge and sat down in a corner of the room. She glanced around: everyone appeared to be quiet today. ‘At least I won’t stand out, in that case.’ Her eye caught the form of Rhys, who was eating his breakfast whilst leaning against the wall. ‘Well, he’s looking better than he was earlier… guess I might greet him, if he is indeed coming with us.’ She stood up from her table and made her way towards the man. ‘What’s up with all the tall men here?’ Extending her hand to him, she sent him a warm smile. “Good morning ser… Rhys was it, right? My name is Bartha. How are you today? Feeling a bit better than before?”

Tessa entered the courtroom still smiling after nearly being bowled over by Mercuriel.  She had her pack with her, and a new greatsword from Warden Tarl's arsenal. She had a small moment of sadness at letting go her old sword, but this new one felt like it had been crafted to her grip and she looked forward to working out with it.

She found the porridge, fixed herself a bowl with no additives, and smiled at Rael and at Rhys in passing as she found a place to sit.  Tess tucked in with a single minded concentration until she looked up to see the man from the hill walk in and make a beeline, it seemed, toward Beldin.  Since that clearly didn't concern her, she went back to finishing her breakfast, although she smiled at her bowl when the man -Maker, what was his name? Fabian, or someting?- called Beldin Ser Ox.

As Tessa finished up her bowl and sat back, sated for the moment, she saw Tempest stand.  As the healer spoke, Tessa's expression grew serious and at her final words, she met Rhys's eyes and raised a brow as if to say, 'Are you still sure?'
