Laurelin’s distress apparently affected her dreams. That night she saw herself locked in a cage unable to move or speak, and while familiar faces surrounded her and called her name no one could see her.
It's been a while since the last time she had such restless sleep.
Suddenly she felt a pair of claws grabbing her hair, their weight pressing her head against the ground...She woke up screaming, droplets of cold sweat running from her forehead."Bloody Void"She gasped as she realized that the claws grabbed her again, her heart beating fast she reached for her staff.Until she heard that familiar croak "What in the name of the creators are you doing here?"She asked not knowing whether she should feel daft for asking a bird and most importantly expecting an answer from it.
"Yum"it answered, she wasn’t feeling that daft anymore. This is how he asked for food or how Laurelin responded when she found food.He would often imitate the weirdest sounds she'd make but thankfully not repeat them as often as a parrot.
"Ofcourse, you're hungry, that explains everything."She said and grasped some wheat. She had in her pocket.
"Stupid bird, you scared the life out of me!"She exclaimed as she removed her clothes and jumped in the tub,the water was a bit colder than she'd like it to be, but she was in a hurry. Her thoughts wandered again to a certain someone.
Laurelin felt again an unsettling feeling in her stomach, but it was her heart that hurt the most.
She shouldn't allow herself to be distracted any further. Most importantly she shouldn't allow anyone ,especially Mercuriel, know how she felt.
She will avoid him and pretend that nothing happened,at least when the others were present.
They had enough on their minds with the revengers and all.
"Good morning."She said stoically as she entered the courtrooms,by the creators! He was also there, what was she supposed to be doing again? She hastily walked forward faking a smile and avoiding all possible eye contact, towards Tempest who was making a very important announcement.

“Good morning ser… Rhys was it, right? My name is Bartha. How are you today? Feeling a bit better than before?”

Rhys smiled warmly and grasped Bartha's hand in greeting.  "Hello, Bartha.  Yes, I'm Rhys, and yes, feeling steadier today.  I'm sorry if I was a bit of a buffoon last night.  I wasn't prepared for the ale apparently."

Rhys broke off speaking as the mage delivered her advice to the group.  He hadn't noticed corruption but he hadn't stuck around to inspect the bodies either.  And maybe the corruption only showed in the living.  Catching Tessa's look, he nodded, returning her look with one of resolution.  He patted his bow beside him and smiled grimly.

"I want to warn you about something Eshara warned me about," she said. "The wounds inflicted by these creatures are corrupted with some sort of dark magic. Thus the wounds are slow to respond to both magical and conventional healing. This is why Eshara remained so ill. When we fight, we must be careful. If one of us is wounded, a simple healing spell may not be sufficient, especially if time has passed. We must not risk taking any damage that is not absolutely necessary."

Beldin sighed, but said nothing. It was easy to speak of avoiding injury, but nobody set out to do it on purpose.

Rael listened carefully when Tempest spoke and felt her stomach sink as she finished. So it was more than just fearsome demons they would have to fight--these demons could poison them past the point of magical aid. She sighed quietly. So far, she'd manage to stay towards in the periphery during their battles, and therefore had avoided injury. She could only hope that tactic would continue to sustain her.

Tempest realized she had probably worried her companions, or made their task seem hopeless, which was not her intention.

"Try not to fear," Tempest added with a reassuring smile. "We will heal your wounds as quickly as we can, and if they are not allowed to fester, we will have less to fear from this corruption. May the Maker watch over us all."

Laurelin nodded, truth be told she never heard of a similar curse or corruption of wounds. She remembered some details from the keeper's large black book about darkspawm and how they would infect someone with their taint. But nothing about monsters with knives instead of fingers.
"Whatever the cost,we must put an end to this."She said calmly "I don't desire to see more people elvhen or human, share the fate of the Fuldors."

Bartha smiled at Rhys in return. "Glad to hear that." She trailed off when Tempest made her announcement, and has Rhys wasn't focused on her anymore, she had slipped away.

'Tarl mentioned something about a table... good thing there aren't that many tables in this mansion.' Bartha thought sarcastically, as she scanned the room for a trace of her throwing knife. 'Nope, not here... Let's have a look at those other weapons first, that knife is not that important for now.'

Bartha walked through the hallway, admiring the fine weapons that were installed on the wall. She was surely not a specialist when it came to weapons, but she could tell that it was fine craftsmanship that made those. She lingered when she came across a pair of daggers, with matching scabbards below them. Along the blade she could see some inscriptions, but it was too far away to read them or recognize the script. The handle had been embedded with leather and the pommel held the image of a wolfs head. 'How ironic...' Whilst standing on her toes, she reached out for them... and came just a few inches short. 'Keep it out of reach for children... sure... but why does that have to apply to me too?' She sighed and walked back to the courtroom. "Anyone a bit taller than me willing to lend a hand?"

Mercuriel listened to Tempest speak along with the rest of the group. He found a corner in the room and leaned against it. Dog joined him.

Darkspawn...he'd never seen one up close before. Well, there was a first time for everything. It's not like he wanted to live much longer anyway. He chuckled inwardly to himself and looked across the room at Laurelin. He'd caught her looking at him quickly when she entered the room earlier. Yep, things were definitely awkward. Wonderful.

Bartha, who had wandered out of the room only to return, addressed the group with a request for assistance. Since she seemed to be talking to no one in particular he figured he could respond.

"I am willing." He saluted her and walked over. "What do you need help with?"

Bartha smiled when Mercuriel offered her assistance. "Thank you, Mercuriel." She walked over and pointed at the daggers on the wall. "I would like to take these daggers with me, but they hang just out of my reach. Would you please take them for me?"

Mercuriel reached up, plucked the two daggers from the wall, and held them out to Bartha with a huge smile on his face.

"Just remember the pointy-end goes into the enemy, okay?" He held the daggers up higher for a moment to tease her further but then relented and lowered them. "I didn't get to see much of your fighting in the last battle. Perhaps, in the near future, I could witness your talents for myself."

He ruffled Bartha's hair playfully then returned to the courtroom. Dog greeted him with a bark and Mercuriel returned to his corner ready to leave whenever everyone else did.

When Tessa finished her breakfast, she gave a look around the room at all her companions, her gaze lingering thoughtfully on the elves in the group.  After a moment, she leaned across to Rhys and whispered, "Come with me."

She rose and took her bowl and left it on the sideboard, then walked over to where Beldin and Fabian were standing.

"So, I was thinking..." she started, then lowered her voice.

"Just remember the pointy-end goes into the enemy, okay?"

Bartha raised a brow at Mercuriels comment, then feigned a shocked expression. "Wait what? You think I'll stab someone with it? Noooo... these are just for cooking." She chuckled when he kept them out of her reach. "Alright alright... I know how to handle them." She took them from him and moved them around a bit between her hands. The balance was quite well and they fit nicely in her hands, although they were obviously not made for a dwarf. She smiled at his comment. "Yes, I think we about to witness quite some combat, if the stories are any indication."

She wrinkled her nose when Mercuriel ruffled her hair, then proceeded with removing her empty scabbards from her belt and replacing them with the new ones. The old ones were hung on the hooks: it was the only thing she could offer a substitute for at the moment.

After that she made her way back to the courtroom.

Plot Post: Farewell to the Asylum

Summary: The humans decide how to get the elves out of the village safely (assuming the elves cooperate) and Etienne gets a summons he can't refuse.

Tessa waited until Rhys had joined them before going on. She looked at each of the men in turn as she spoke.

"We're going to be leaving soon, and I realize that we're going to have to walk through the town, and probably stop in the marketplace with three elves, two of which are Dalish."

She sighed and resisted the urge to look behind her at the elves in question. "Do you think it would...be prudent, maybe, to have one of us, I don't know, stand guard with one of the elves as we leave?  You know, to just let the townsfolk know they're under our protection."

Tessa crossed her arms, frowning. "I just know some of these folks would cut Laurelin or Mercuriel down without a second thought, and think they were doing the Maker's work the whole time."  She gave Beldin a serious look. "Yousaw the men with Tarl at the farmhouse."

Rhys looked puzzled and glanced at the elves.  "Why would they need a guard?  This town hostile to elves, is it?"

Tessa blinked at Rhys before she remembered that he just got here.

"I don't think they are, normally, Rhys. Or at least, no more than most small towns.  It's just...they think the Dalish are to blame for the deaths that I think were maybe caused by the creatures you saw."

She was still frowning as she went on. "And because they're frightened, some of them think that killing any Dalish they see will stop what's happening, and change what's happened. They may not stop to think about the fact that the Dalish with us want to see this stopped as badly as the townspeople do."

"You speak the truth," Fabian said. "None of the Dalish are safe, not until you find these clawed monsters and the villagers see their corpses with their own eyes."

Beldin bobbed his head from side to side in agreement.

"It's hard to argue with that," he said. "I noticed it myself in the days before your arrival. Talk on the watchtowers was pretty poisoned. Maybe each of us should pair up with one of the elves. Laurelin and Mercuriel are probably in the most danger, but it might be a good idea to give Rael an escort, too."

"It wouldn't hurt to have a couple of us off in front and back of the group watching the edges, either.  At least while we're on the move," Rhys said.  "We have enough for flankers."

Beldin scuffed his boot against the wooden courtroom floor.

"I don't know if we need to march through the market in formation," he said. "With as many of us as there are, it might look like an invasion. Maybe the four of us could pair off with the more vulnerable ones and look intimidating. That ought to be enough to deter casual hostility. Anything bigger than that, and we're going to need to pull together anyway, so maybe keep an eye out for where the others are, and rally if something comes up that one person alone can't handle."

Tessa crossed her arms and nodded slowly.

"That's fair. We don't want to draw more attention, we just need to make a statement, maybe. I'll walk with Rael. I agree that she's maybe in less real danger, but I also think that some folks may only get as far as a pointed ear without looking for markings."

She looked up, then, at both of the large men. "Which is why I think you two need to walk with Laurelin and Mercuriel. You're both big, and if not intimidating....at least big." She smirked before going on. "Rhys, maybe you can walk with Mercuriel-he is easily my equal in strength, and he's got Dog, so between the three of you maybe folks won't want to bother. Beldin, maybe you can walk with Laurelin. She's the one I'm most worried about, actually."

She narrowed her eyes in worry. "I...still don't know exactly what she did last night, but if anyone outside us saw it..."

Rhys nodded.  "I'll pair up with the lad and dog then.  Shall we get on the road?"

"Aye," Beldin said. "And I'll watch over Laurelin."

He stood up straight, squared his shoulders, and glared as illustration, then relaxed to more human proportions.

"In Logerwold, that's nothing much, but in the lowlands, it'll serve."

Tessa snorted at Beldin.

"Let's hope so, then."

As they finished their conversation, the doors burst open and Sal strode in, leading a pair of helmeted templars.

"Beg your pardon, my lord," he addressed Tarl. "Sers... the templars, I can never keep them straight... have an urgent message for the... er... mage. It's from Sister Arda."

The taller of the two templars stepped forward.

"Thank you, Sal," he said, "I can take it from here."

He walked over to Etienne and handed him a scroll.

"Sister Arda's found a tome in ancient Tevene that might have some bearing on the curse," he said. "Maybe even a solution, if her guesses are right. It's faded and the ink is flaking off in places, so she's desperate for a translator with more proficiency in the language. I'm afraid that I'm going to have to insist that you come with me, and I'm going to have to insist that you come alone. The remainder of the volume contains highly sensitive material, and you must be kept sequestered while you decipher it. I apologize for denying you the right of refusal, but the village's situation is dire."

"Of course, ser templar," Etienne said. "I... understand."

He cast one last, longing glance at Rael and followed the templars from the hall, his face troubled.

Beldin watched Etienne leave behind the templars. He worried for the young man, but he would be safe enough in the heart of the chantry, surrounded by his beloved books.

After a moment, he sighed and approached Laurelin.

"Would you mind if I escorted you through the market?" he asked her. "I'd feel better about your safety if you allowed it."

Tempest had mixed feelings, setting off on the journey. It was not easy stepping away from the safety and protection of the manor sanctuary into unknown dangers, leaving some of her new friends behind. On the other hand, there was no time to tarry, and Tempest longed to end this menace once and for all. Better a fight than the endless anticipation of one, and if they could free the Dalish clan, stop the murders, and bring peace to the village, it would all be worth it.

Before they set out, Tempest healed Eshara once more for good measure. The Dalish woman's condition had improved since they found her on the brink of death, but Eshara was still ill and weakened. As a mage herself, Eshara would be able to see to her own healing while Tempest was gone, but Tempest was sure that Eshara didn't have as much energy as she normally did, so Tempest wanted to do all she could for her while she was around.

Spoiler

Had this been an ordinary expedition, Tempest would have been eager to visit the bookseller while she was in town, indulging one of her favorite hobbies. As it was, she didn't want to delay the rescue of the Dalish for something so frivolous. Since Tempest was not in need of supplies, though, if her friends had shopping to do to prepare for the journey, she might take a moment to browse the literary wares.

Tempest bid farewell to Tarl and Eshara, then unexpectedly to Etienne too. There was no time for elaborate goodbyes to the other mage, especially not under the watchful eyes of the templars, but she said a quiet "Maker watch over you, my friend" as he passed.

{Tempest's spell is successful, but Eshara is past the point where healing, magical or mundane, will work. Her constitution is 0, so she gains no benefit from that, but she will still regain one health point per day until she's at maximum health once more.}

Rael stood straight and rigid as the courtroom doors slammed shut with Etienne on the other side of them. It took her a moment to register what had just happened--that he'd been hauled off to the Chantry for Maker-knew how long--with only a fleeting glance to spare her. It was just as likely that by the time they returned, he'd be back at the Circle and out of her life forever. Emotion welled up in her chest, but she could not tell if it was grief or anger.

It wasn't his fault, she reminded herself. Etienne was always only in half-possession of himself at any time. The Circle claimed true ownership, which meant that he could never truly be hers in the end. She and Etienne had only known each other such a short time, but she'd come to care for him and he'd seemed to feel the same. Certainly, he'd been taken against his will, but even if he had departed of his own volition, the end result would have been the same. It was a distinction without a difference.

"Enough of this foolishness," she muttered to herself, turning back towards the group, hoping her wounded heart would find a way to mend.

Laurelin's heart nearly dropped to her knees when she saw the Templars, the first thing she thought was that they came for  her she slowly stepped backwards in a desperate attempt to leave the room as quietly as possible. They certainly weren't as scary as the keeper described them but the thought of being sent to the circle or worse was frightening enough. She felt equally relieved and sad when she heard that they actually came for Etienne, who would be leaving the group shortly. She glanced towards Rael, sadness was more than apparent in her eyes.

Prior to Etienne's departure, she heard her name being mentioned despite the distance between her and the humans, from what she understood from the few phrases she managed to overhear, they were discussing about her safety, once more.

While she felt nothing but gratitude towards them, she despised that feeling of vulnerability. For one  she could turn into let's say a cat and navigate into the town unnoticed, but the last thing she wanted was to spend precious  mana, when there were dangers about. Most importantly, she was afraid that changed for the second time in front of others, would bring her trouble, be it in the form of a rabid mob or the Templars.

Her pride was more wounded  than she'd like the past few days, but she had no choice. She couldn't tell whether it was her sense of honor, her love for her people or her own personal motives that prevented her from leaving, but what she knew was that she couldn't back out now.

The sound of heavy footsteps reminded her that it wasn't the best time for contemplation, she turned around to see Beldin approaching her. She was relieved that he wasn't spooked of her  because of her shape-shifting abilities, knowing how easily unsettled by magic he was.

"Would you mind if I escorted you through the market?" He asked  "I'd feel better about your safety if you allowed."

Laurlein nodded and smiled faintly, if it was anyone else in Beldin's shoes she might have protested, but she was touched by the fact that her friend was concerned for her safety.

"I wouldn't mind at all, Beldin."she said evenly.

Tessa watched as Etienne left with the templars. Well, Etienne would be safe, and maybe he could find something that would help these folks. She walked to Rael, who was looking a little poleaxed, and no wonder.

"We're going to have to leave soon, Rael. Let me walk with you to deter...any nonsense from people, please."

She wrinkled her nose before going on, "I know you can take care of yourself, but maybe it'd be an ease for you not to have to, right this moment."

Mercuriel bristled a little at the conversation Tessa, Beldin, and the two other men were having. He understood the hostility of this area towards the Dalish but a babysitter? That's what it amounted to basically. He sighed, clearly unhappy with the situation but kept his mouth shut. Now was not the time to argue. He just wanted to get out of this town and on the way to their next destination.

When the one man agreed to go with him and Dog, Mercuriel looked up into the eyes of his temporary guard. He hadn't talked with this man yet. Although the man seemed to know Tessa quite well. The fact that Tessa spoke with him so cordially made Mercuriel feel that he could give this man some respect, if not trust.

"So what is your name, sir?" Mercuriel asked while looking over at Laurelin. He knew Beldin would protect her with his life but he still felt a bit annoyed that it wasn't him watching over her. Despite the awkwardness of last night, he would still lay down his life for her. She was a fellow Dalish and...despite his mind turning her away, his heart could not do that so easily no matter what he said to her yesterday.

He suddenly remembered something that the man had said earlier and frowned, turning his attention back on his babysitter. "Also, don't ever call me lad again. I simply age more gracefully than humans."

Rael's thoughts were still swirling in her mind when Tessa approached and said something about chaperoning her out of Vintiver. At first, she balked: she'd been in the village now for over two weeks. Surely, most people knew who she was and that she was no Dalish monster.

But then she sighed. There would be no harm in Tessa walking beside her, and the woman seemed intent on it. Rael nodded numbly without even looking Tess in the eye and started walking mechanically towards the door. More than anything, she needed to get out of that blasted courtroom and into the fresh air, if only to unchain her mind to think of other things.

""So what is your name, sir?...Also, don't ever call me lad again. I simply age more gracefully than humans."

Rhys had wandered over to Mercurial, pondering how he would introduce himself but it seemed the introduction was already made at least in part.  He winced inwardly at the reprimand but kept a friendly smile nonetheless.

"I'm Rhys.  Sorry about this; you look like you can take care of yourself but perhaps if we look menacing enough we won't have to finish a fight someone else starts."

He opened his hand in a gesture of peace.  "Don't take my words to heart, either.  I don't mean to imply that you are young or untried or something along those lines.  Are you willing to do this to protect the rest of our group?"

Bartha was testing her new daggers a bit. They laid well in her hands and were way better balanced than her old ones. However, she expected that she would get used to it soon. She glanced in the direction of the group humans, who were busily discussing something. From the few words she could catch, she understood that the conversation was about their Dalish party members and their safety.

A templar appeared into the room, and as quickly as he came, he was gone again. But he had taken Etienne with him. Dumbfounded Bartha kept staring at the door when it was already closed behind them. She was paining her brain, trying to understand what had just happened. Especially the fact that Etienne appeared to have no choice in the matter, but to comply to the Chantries wishes stung her. 'Blighters... he's a human, not some possession!' She had noticed the pained exchange of glances between Etienne and Rael, which only fueled her disbelief and anger.

She got disturbed in her thoughts when the group had come into motion and approached their elven friends. Apparently the tallest humans would function as bodyguard for the elves? Bartha bit on her lip. Their complete gang would attract attention anyway. Sure, a lone villager would think twice to try to attack any of the elves, but they would still stand no chance against an angry mob. Spilling more blood would only deepen the conflict... she hoped that the humans had taken that into account when they made their decision.

Tessa wiped a hand over her face and followed behind Rael. She didn't want the elven woman to feel that she was being overbearing in the face of what was obviously an unwanted event, but she also didn't want her to wander into danger in her distraction.

"Rael, wait."
