I used the Beholder from Pain's pack, and it is a little bit overpowered for the levels I was planning to use it. These special abilities that he has, will lowering the caster level to them cause him to make less damage or require less save DC on his spell attacks? And in general, just for the info on it, what controls the special abilities? Is it a 2da of its own? Do they require spell scripts? Or what...

Thanks a lot.

Aberration 11 // monsters like this 'cheatCast' spells, always at casterlevel 10.

vars:
X2_SPECIAL_COMBAT_AI_SCRIPT='x2_ai_behold'
X2_L_BEH_MAGIC=100
X2_BEHOLDER_AI_NOJUMP=1

Spells.2da #736 BEHOLDER_SPECIAL_SPELL_AI
'x2_s1_beholdatt'
'x2_inc_beholder'

Spells.2da #776 - 787 BEHOLDER_NODE_*
'x2_s1_beholdray' // saveDC is coded here. Mine says "15", and in this case it won't be adjusted by Charisma bonus maybe it does*.

* I think Cha-bonus is added to cheatCasts, only when the spellscript calls getSpellSaveDC or maybe getCasterLevel. I saw neither in the beholder scripts, so i think it's just a straight-up DC 15.

Beholder scripts need a bit of NwN2 love, seems t'me. Lowering its level won't lower the power of its spellabilities.

but i could be wrong.

Hmm. So if I want to make a weaker one I should mess with copies of the existing scripts lowering the DCs etc in there. Too much work. I'll just visit at a higher level I think :D.

Someone could be kind and create blueprints and scripts for the whole range of Beholderkin.  Maybe a gauth would be what you want?

A gauth seems kinda weak for the purposes of the quest. More like an Elder Orb. But I know what you mean, it could be awesome to have them scipted etc. A gauth exists in Pain's package, but I think it's tinted rescaled Beholder with the same powers.

In the original Baldur's Gate there were Gauths who were just tinted and rescaled, too, but the powers being the same in Pain's pack would be a problem.  I remember when I first saw it in the sewers, panicked, and unloaded my heaviest attacks on it immediately, and was surprised at how easily it died.  ToEE used Death Tyrants, and they were just tinted and scaled Beholders, too.

It was just a guess. And then I checked it. The Beholder blueprint has special attacks with a caster level 14. The gauth blueprint has its caster level at 8. I need to test it to see if Pain was experimenting or he knew that it worked and thus indeed changing the caster level changes the difficulty, Tomorrow after work I will test it if no one does it until then :). If it works like that it should be easier to create blueprints for all the Beholderkin.

You could always turn it into a wizard/warlock or something like that, play about with it's statistics, hp and ac, scrap the special abilities that are overpowered and give it whatever spells you want.

I just tested a Gauth and a Beholder from Pain's package and the Gauth seems to make less damage with its caster level 8 on special abilities.

Edit: my mistake I think. Two Beholders with different spell level abilities wreck just about the same. The only think that would make a difference on the test with the Gauth is that it has lower stats. I cannot see why it would though. But in any case this is an overkill for me and I'm just testing for the shake of it. I won't change my quest and just make it be for higher level.

Tchos. As for the whole Beholderkin... I might take the challenge but I am also afraid that I will need to do a lot of scripting to get the different powers etc. Good news is, that the scripts exist and it could be the place to start and read about what's going on.

Yes, they should have specific powers as listed, not just a lower caster class.  Anyway, I haven't found an opportunity to use a beholder or beholderkin, so I'm not in a hurry.
