So I watched a playthrough of PT demo (no, I don't have a ps4) -- it does look like a really generic indie horror game which happens to have pretty environmental graphics. The monsters though are nothing special and the reliance on jumpscares even less so... and cycling through the same hallway 30 times isn't really doing it for me as an atmosphere builder, it's just repetitive.

The fact that you're stuck in a hallway that changes something every time you go through it and the player is unable to find a way out seems like a pretty good atmosphere builder to me. That's what made the demo so tense and scary. That and the few jump scares there were (only one major one) actually were quite effective because of said tension. If it didn't scare you, that's cool. You're so awesome.
This game does not rely on jump scares, just like the original Silent Hill games, even though they are present but scattered. There is so much more at work in this demo other than those little surprise moments. People are just trying their damnedest to dismiss this game in a futile effort, the pros greatly outweigh the cons. The only con being is that the final "puzzle" is a bit too ridiculous to solve.

I'll take your word for it.

I forgot to mention, the talking chicken looking fetus thing was just silly, as was the talking bag? wtf was that even?
Also, putting part of the puzzle in the menu and that little radio bit about "they said it was just a game" is some pretty pretentious Psycho Mantis crap, I have to say. Thanks Kojima.

Agree to disagree.

If Kojima and Del Toro don't put in a new Dog ending I'll be so sad.

That's the point.
You weren't supposed to know that it was Silent Hill until the very end.

Though this game will be perfect if it randomly cuts to Sean Bean investigating stuff.

This game would be just perfect if it wasn't called Silent Hill, or in this case, Silent Hills, given Kojima's tendency to give his games retarded subtitles with random suffix's added to the end. It looks like a fine contender to be swallowed up by the singularity of indie horror games that all seemingly takes a page out of Amnesia's book.

And you should be congratulated for trying your damnedest to make the demo seem more interesting than it really was ![]()
The inherent problem with jump scares isn't whether they can actually drive a reaction out of you -- It's because when a horror game only has that to show for itself, like Dead Space, then it becomes tirelessly predictable and not scary at all. Jump scares exists for shock effect alone, like Nemesis bursting through the window of the Raccoon City Police Department -- The ****** game even warned the player ahead of time with the sounds of crashing windows that he was gonna show up: Funny, as you descend down the stairs and find there is no one there, but when you walk a few steps, he bursts through the window. That's the cheap and preposterously implemented jump-scares I loathe, and it's usually all that the Resident Evil franchise had to show for itself. I saw nothing of the contrary in this demo. What I saw wasn't atmosphere building tension, nothing of the sorts I found with Silent Hill, with the radio warning of nearby monsters or the deliberate manipulating audio, sometimes there'd be no music, some there'd be. There wasn't that tension or atmosphere building in great horror games like Condemned, Eternal Darkness or Silent HIll 2. Admittedly, I don't know what's he going to do with the final game, but we only have the demo to go on, and it wasn't very impressive.
If what the demo had was exactly what you'd want out of a horror game, then more power to you then.
If the game doesn't have Akira Yamaoka doing the soundtrack and Kojima instead choose to invite some random Hollywood bloke to score it, then consider me completely uinterested in giving his idea of a horror game a chance.
I think I've had enough pretentious nonsense with MGS.

I don't think the demo is necessarily indicative of what the final game will turn out to be. They said that they intentionally designed so that it would resemble something created by an indie dev and I think it was pretty cool for what it was.
It certainly got me an edge.
Well, until I got frustrated by the final puzzle and bailed.

Here's a thing: Konami confirms Silent Hills is cancelled..
Not surprising considering all the hubbub over there right now.
I'm probably one of the very few not broken up about this. While it didn't appeal to me as a SH game, it did show promise as a horror game.

I agree, I wasn't entirely sure that what I loved about Silent Hill was gonna be represented in that collaboration. Although, I suppose it could have been better than any of the crap that came after The Room -- At best, it'll be buried along with the rest of Konami as they perform massive sepuku. Here's a thing: Konami confirms Silent Hills is cancelled..

Incidentally, Guy Cihi is starring in a new horror IP, though it plays more or less like an homage to Silent Hill, but it could be interesting.. then there's Red Thread Games' Horror game which I assume they'll work on when Dreamfall is finished.

After "The Evil Within," I'm a bit wary of horror games that are homages to other popular horror games tbh.

True.
But I'm not really big on the Amnesia trend either.

Konami is committed to new Silent Hill titles, however the embryonic 'Silent Hills' project developed with Guillermo del Toro and Someguylol featuring the likeness of Norman Reedus will not be continued," Konami said.
Lol, Konami.

Apparently in the age of quality-wise cheap triple A game productions, Konami thinks triple A games are too expensive.

I just love how they ignored mentioning Kojima, well, they did in the other paragraph, though he was part of the development given he's the game designer of the two of them so it just seemed very low-bro. They are like upset teenagers.

My stepbrother is mad disappointed.
I don't play horror games though so I'm good. I do recognize it as unfortunate however.

They're working on a new project called Josef Fritzl's Dungeon.
