I've only seen this tweet from Mark Darrah.  Doesn't mention gender but there could be something else out there.

If he doesn't mention gender then there's no canon Hawke (thankfully)

But there is no true canon

There's our canon and Bioware's canon

Or an important NPC Warden, even.

The DAA warden is the most important Warden out there.

They haven't canonized anything like gender, class, race for Hawke/Warden yet.

Some decisions have been canonized in BW's own world state for use in novels/comics (Alistair king, Wynne survived DA:O so the Circle wasn't Annulled, etc.) but these don't affect our own canon as experienced in game.

The DAA warden is the most important Warden out there.

Yes and I'm guessing the Warden Commander of Ferelden is one of the last Warden Commanders free of whatever is mentally influencing the Wardens in 9:41 (Corypheus).  We know s/he 'disappeared' sometime between 9;37-9:40 and that is probably what saved them.

What if that's the reason they dissapeared? Maybe Flemeth knew what was gonna happen, so she warned the Warden to go...somewhere and then to return when it would be time.

After reading David's blurb about how much they give away for marketing, I had a thought about seeing Hawke and that warden guy (I still think it's Alistair) in the trailer. What if it's just one of Varric's stories? The Inquisitor is asking Varric for history on what happened in Kirkwall, and he turns it into this huge tale where Hawke fought alongside Alistair to defeat the monstrous qunari invaders, or something... A fish tale. He's making a huge story out of nothing. And then Cassandra will butt in and yell, "Bullshit! That's not the way you told it to me, dwarf!"

I always figured the DA:O Warden and Flemeth are antagonists but I guess that depends on your choices (Did you 'kill' Flemeth?  Did you help Morrigan with the DR?)

It's likely also the case Flemeth wanted all of that to happen anyway so she might not hate the Hero of Ferelden so much if 'killing' her.

...

Really?

So he tells her how in the Fade they PLUS the Inquisitor fought a giant spider?

It makes even less sense when I try to type it

Ah, sorry. I just woke up, and I forgot that the Inquisitor was there with them.

I assumed you meant antagonistic toward each other, jlb524, and I agree that that'll depend a lot on choices.

In fact, something that would be really awesome would be meeting up with Flemeth, the Warden (whichever one is in play at the moment) and Hawke - the Warden and Hawke have very different histories with her, even though she rescued both of them for reasons of her own. And I would bet that the Inquisitor's relationship with Flemeth will be no less complex and interesting. Should make for some amazing conversations!

I'll admit that I also love Chanda's idea of Varric telling the story of Hawke around a campfire and that's how we're first introduced to Hawke, a la the intro to DA2 - full of inaccuracies and embellishments. And then later in the story you actually meet Hawke, who's like, "which tall tale did Varric try out on you? The one about how I rescued an orphanage from an avalanche, or the one where I beat a dragon in a game of wicked grace?"

Mostly I'm just hoping that Cassandra gets to meet Hawke and has to restrain herself from asking for an autograph.

Sorry for going off topic, but that qunari in the background is killing me. I keep seeing him doing the pointy-finger Elaine dance from Seinfield.

I will look for the link when I get home. I know I read it somewhere official-like, either an interview or an FAQ somewhere.

Mmkay, I found the source I was trying to recall, and this is definitely what I remember reading, but it seems I was indeed wrong.  It was from here.

What's the Default-World-State?
A female Dalish Elf Warden, who made the Ultimate Sacrifice, Alistair is King of Fereldan. And a Mage Hawke, who sided with the Mages.

And I think I read the word mage as male back when I first read it, so I am mistaken.  That part of my earlier post may be stricken from the record. ;)

Thanks for linking! And no worries about thinking it said "male" instead of "mage," I totally see how that would happen. Plus, considering that they made the default world-state Warden a woman, I think it's understandable to assume that the default world-state Hawke might be a dude. I think it's really cool that they left that open-ended, though.

Funny enough, the thing I have the most problem with is reconciling the idea that default world-state Hawke is a mage. I never played Hawke as a mage - warrior and rogue plenty of times, but I'm not very comfortable playing a mage - so that part of it was a much bigger surprise than the gender!
