Thanks for the heads up! I doubt I'll be able to watch it but I'll give it a shot.
The trailer doesn't do anything for it at all. :{
Nope.
Aside from anything else, the camera constantly shaking around, randomly flashing to black, and no shots lasing longer than one second has genuinely given me a headache... The concept of the game isn't something I'm all that interested in anyway, but the trailer really sucks!
BioWare Unveils 4v1 Online Action RPG ‘Shadow Realms’
It, like many of the current-gen games in development, features 4-player co-op, but is still story-focused in nature. However, as of right now, BioWare is billing the game as a PC-focused online action RPG with no mention of a console release.
(...)
What makes things interesting is that another independent player is controlling the Shadow Lord, setting traps, calling forth minions, and doing direct damage to the team.
(...)
BioWare also revealed that Shadow Realms will tell its story episodically, almost like a TV series. In essence, it sounds like whatever content BioWare releases at launch will only be the beginning.
The second paragraph reminds me an awful lot of Dungeonland.
I must say this game seems exactly like my kinda game with the whole DM Shadow Lord concept and that is mainly what has me interested.
However, after not being able to play Dead Space 2's, Max Payne 3's, Batman Arkham Origin's and many other games multiplayer literally months after their releases simply because everyone else moved on and didn't want to play any more, I have vowed to NEVER buy another game that I cannot play the multiplayer offline with bots on -- especially if the whole game is just multiplayer.
That being said, we need to know if there will be any way to play this game offline with bots and, if so, can you be the Shadow Lord against 4 AI players? It may sound like an odd way to do it, but Fable Legends is going to let us be the Villain against 4 AI players.
Why in the hell does this have to be PC-exclusive...
What I'm expecting from this game is that it has the same charisma as The Old Republic. Hopefully it still has dialogue options and whatnot...
I was all excited to find out about this game and as soon as I saw 4v1 I gave up completely.
With what I know right now about the setting, co-op only, PC only, and developed by BioWare Austin. I am starting to think this might be the project they were talking about with Failbetter.
Right now as it stands it will become the fourth BioWare game I haven't bought and the short list would be Shattered Steel, MDK2, Sonic Chronicles, and now Shadow Realms.

and this is why I need bots. So even if everyone hates it and I am one of the only people who love it, I can still play it for years to come.
Dark Tidings: BioWare Announces 'Shadow Realms' At GamesCom 2014
I'll just quote the interesting bits:
BioWare Austin’s lead writer, Hall Hood, has created the world. He was also lead writer on the Jedi Knight storyline for Star Wars: The Old Republic, so expect mysticism and Manicheanism aplenty.
Unfortunately, in my case, the Jedi Knight storyline isn't really that interesting. Moving on...
Developer James Ohlen says in a blog post:
"It is a game that finally fulfills that fantasy of a never-ending RPG where the players meet up regularly to keep their epic adventures going for as long as they want. All the enemies, traps and challenges are squarely in the hands of another player, who controls them just like a Dungeon Master. The monsters and villains are smart and unpredictable, making every battle a test of strategy and power. Best of all, everyone gets to enjoy a story that plays out like their favorite TV series, but where they decide the fates of its world and characters."
Whether or not there's a lot of demand for that fantasy, the same could be achieved through a single player campaign with offline co-op, could it not? Otherwise it boils down to playing SWTOR with a bunch of friends. Not to mention I don't see how one player would willingly play the Dungeon Master for a never-ending amount of time without getting bored fast. Dungeonland (a similar 3v1 game) worked because the game was fun and the levels were short. I honestly don't know if extending this mechanic will work.
Ohlen harks back not only to pen-and-paper role-playing, but also to early BioWare PC games – and this may be the rub for many RPG enthusiasts. Early BioWare games were single-player – they built a world around the player using the creativity and imagination of the writers.
Yup.
I guess in the absence of a single player component the next obvious question is whether the game will include AI that will take over the missing members, including the Dungeon Master.
Why couldn't they have just done a single player RPG with offline co-op?

Nanomachines Microtransactions, son.
It could be really fun to play with friends. But I hope there will be a story mode that can be played with bots too.
Not really surprising that they wanted a co-op game after ME3 MP, even if it's a bit odd that it's got no single-player campaign. I do hope that they include bots for solo play at least.
It looks like it could be interesting and I'm always looking for new co-op games to play.
No singleplayer, no buy

4v1 multi only, that's the sound of all my interest going out the window.
It could be interesting. I wonder what the one will be doing. Perhaps it's like coming into a role playing session and setting down at the table with the board and characters already prepared as well as the general outline. It's up to the one to choose how to employ them. Thinking a bit in terms of dragon age would the dungeon master be controlling the high dragon and telling it who to attack first? What reward is there for killing off the other players and how much power do we really have?
It'd be quite a short game if you could immediately sick your most powerful character on the group. The players start off in the town of, Oh Crap!, and within the first three minutes they're hit with twelve ogres and a dragon trying to kill them.
I believe it could be quite interesting if it's like a RTS with role playing aspects put into it. What would determine who's the villain though?
This of course means that the game play could differ greatly in difficulty. Even a superb player can be brought down by three buffoons and while I understand real life happens if your kid is calling you away from the keyboard every ten minutes perhaps you should stop playing. As for the worries about the duration. I assume that it'd be like a standard role playing session with blocked time periods. Perhaps we even select how long we're good for. "I can DM for 3 hours. Warning I will kill you every chance I get. I mean seriously."
Of course the players could have it very easy if the game master was terrible. "Seriously? You put your casters with the weakest armor on the front line? You didn't even think to use your warrior's hamstring to slow me are you even trying to win?" I wonder if I could make anyone cry. I supposedly managed to hurt several peoples feelings in world of warcraft throughout the years by critiquing their play style.

Glass half full me thinks so, too. I'll probably end up passing on it, though. It already reminds me too much of The Secret World.
Just came back from the Shadow Realms event at Cologne Marriott hotel, played the pre-alpha dungeon-crawl and had a couple chats with the staff.
Looks interesting so far. Not an absolute must-have as of this moment, but since it isn't even in full alpha yet, that's hardly an argument against it. The combat itself was crisp, if a bit button-mashy (no awesome button though).
Haven't played as Shadow Lord myself, but watched a lot of gameplay for that and can say that it sounds very promising if the features the devs plan are really going into the game. I did play the Assassin in my game session and it reminded me a lot of DAII rogue gameplay (DAII seems are pretty good description to how the gameplay felt like aswell as the combat pace).
Didn't get to see any non-dungeon gameplay like character interactions or story, though the team reiterated the classic BioWare story formula a couple times.
Also, free food and a very nice white wine (also free, poor bar) and the devs seemed incredibly enthusiastic about their very first large scale outing of their project.
That's all I can say.
I'll give them the benefit of the doubt, and signed for the alpha. Worst case, I'll uninstall, and will go on with my life.
Unfortunately the "no companions" kills my hype almost as much as "multiplayer", "4 v 1", and "episodic" do.
It's like they took the exact opposite of what their fanbase actually wants and then put it into a game. It looks awful.
