I wonder how that's going since Casey Hudson left. Wasn't he the lead on that project?

Yeah. But we don't really know what his real job was. Was it simply overview? Or was it guiding things along?

If it was only overview, I don't imagine things will be too "bad." If it was guiding things along, I would imagine that would set back development a little bit, until the next person caught the "vision."

After learning that he created the premise of ME, I suspect he created the premise of the new IP, but isn't (wasn't) necessarily involved in the actual worldbuilding.

I signed up for the alpha, but mandatory coop is kind of a dealbreaker.

That's why e-sports championships are breaking records each year I guess.

Today's peak for Dota 2 simultaneous play was 750k alone (not overall), who knows how many people play online PvP each day on PC. It is not COD numbers, but if you don't spend a small country's GDP on marketing you can break even pretty easily on PC.

It might be not the current BioWare crowd, but there is certainly an audience for these games.

You omitted the important next sentence when quoting me. This sounds like story will be a focus point. Dota was originally created for free by enthusiasts, its production and costs are much much smaller. Dota (and sequel) is is almost unique in how successful they are and are free to play, and is more about simple elegant design. I'm not sure how much story Bioware will be able to develop based on how much revenue they receive. I did suggest they share an editor (how dota started) and let players do the work for them. I'm not writing it off, I'll even say its interesting, but my gut feeling is it isn't going to work too well.

The thing is after Mass Effect 3 Casey Hudson was promoted to being the "overseer" of the Next Mass Effect game and the new IP, so looking back at his leaving it might have been known at that time and he was just getting everything set for his departure.

I have to say I am kinda disappointed by this. I was hopeing for a single payer, horror story-driven game. With awesome supernatural companions. Like a witch or a demon. I'm not big on multiplayer :(

Those who had a chance to play it, liked it. I will try to play it at saturday on gamescom.

I think this is like ME3 multiplayer. Nobody wanted it, but when they had a chance to play it, they got addicted of the amazing  gamesplay.

The difference being that ME3 had a single player campaign which was the reason why people bought the game in the first place.

well when you watch the q&a with the devs, they said that you can start alone. But on specific missions you are going to be placed randomly with others to progress in the story. So basically you dont need friends to play the game. But that is probably something that we, the fans, can change, This game is in a pre alpha state. Maybe they are going to place some sort of AI instead of other players to make the game solo playable. (like companions instead of players and AI-Bosses instead of the shadowlord)

Apply for the beta and leave feedback. If enough people state that they expect a single player they will probably change it.

I don't think they're going to change that. The moment you add bots that can replace your companions and the "Shadow Lord" people will start asking why it needs to be online at all and rightly so (incidentally, Dungeonland already allows you to play solo though it's nowhere near as much fun). To solve that they could, for instance, create 4v1 PvP events after ME3's weekly operations to encourage offline players to join the online community from time to time (SWTOR does a similar thing with FPs and OPs in PvE, though these can be played anytime). I don't know. If they really have a market for this game, then they won't have to listen to my concerns (Titanfall sure as hell didn't when some people, myself included, asked for an online/offline bots mod after CS:GO). All I can say is that this isn't the kind of game I'm looking for but, as you said, we're at the pre-alpha stage so it's still early days.

Don't know .. reminds me a bit of TSW or Hellgate, I never really played it, but I do like the concept of storybackground aka the setting. QUite often it is either pure fantasy (high/low/or such) or SciFi. You don't get that kind of setting toooo often, compared to other settings.

About it being PvP, at present it doesn't excit me as in "must have it now". However I probably at least follow it. Game developers need to be able to try things out as well otherwise we only get the "tried and tested" games which end up at some point feeling all the same with a bit of window dressing. Yes it might fail or it might be good. How prominant MP is at present, unless they mess it up, it would have a good change of being successfull at least.

However I rather have something like this or MMO etc. where MP (or SP for the matter) is the main/only focus of the game and the other component does not feel / is bolted on like it happens tooo often. focuse game instead of making it all the same.

So, they want to recreate the feeling of a pen&paper RPG with an episodic 4:1 online-action-RPG? In a sort of Chulhu Now meets Supernatural meets Constantine scenario (as had The Secret World), with DA2 combat asthetics?

Nope, sorry, not very enthused so far. When I want to play pen&paper RPGs with my friends I do exactly that. When I want to play a story-driven RPG on the PC I do that. When I want to play an online action game I... well, I don't.

And the gameplay in the video linked above just doesn't look very appealing. I'm sorry and I don't want to sound bitter or anything, but it looks a lot like DA2 combat, and that has kind of become one of the benchmarks of non-atmospheric combat asthetics for me.

It's all moot anyways if it's PC exclusive as I won't play another Bioware game on that platform as long as the Origin requirement exists.  :(

Shadow Realms isn't playable at GamesCom. It doesn't even have a booth. The playable demo , Q&A and everything else that wasn't in the press conference was from the fan event that was held at wednesday afternoon. Most staff is in fact going to fly back to Austin after today if I heard Mr. Musco right. Really all they're doing right now is stay for some interviews and then it's back to working.

It doesn't require Origin (at least the alpha signup said that).

I still would be surprised if the final game didn't require Origin.

It will require Origin, why should they change their politics regarding Origin?

Can't say I'm that excited for this one.

Mostly because I hate people (heh).

OTOH, it seems like they're trying to recreate the magic of pen and paper - in which case, I do like people. Except, I doubt that kind of experience will translate online well. The Internet sucks. Good luck proving me wrong though. ;)
