I hope our belief in the Chantry is interchangeable, after all if not then this game is surely built around you playing as a human. I cannot see many Elves, Qunari or certainly Dwarfs being devout Chantry followers and surely Bioware know that.

If that's the case, then I'll never play as a human, because I'm only interested in one class in DA universe. Mage. Though I don't like other races, I simply won't be able to resist the urge to strangle those freaking idiots who'll dare to call the main character something like that.

I doubt that the Dalish or Vashoth are going to be religiously Andrastian (the former in particular makes absolutely no sense), and it's possible the Dwarven protagonist could believe in the Ancestors, depending on how much agency the player has over the character.

I can see my mage Inquisitor being irritated at first when people call her the Herald of Andraste, but if it gets her the results she needs she may play along and end up almost abusing it instead...

Cassandra would so do that if the Quizzy got too cocky.

Looks kinda like this too

Spoiler

Picture under cut for sizing courtesy.

Falon'Din confirmed female?  Not that it'd be weird for any supposed Creator deity to change gender, mind you.

The figure from the trailer is definitely a lady physically, but we don't really have enough context to determine who it is.  For all we know it could be some spirit of faith that saves you from certain death and the people who thought the PC would be an abomination were half-correct.  If it is Andraste?

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Doesn't change the fact that your character is free to believe and react to opinions contrary to his/her own as they like.  Andraste was a historical figure so it doesn't remove the possibility of there being Creators or the Ancestors or whatever you might find faith in.  After all, it's not like these religious systems necessarily have to vie for some monopoly on singular existence.

My human Male Mage Inquisitor will happily take this title. I can use my status as the new prophet to show that our enemies are heretics, allowing us to win over the Chantry and the commoners more easily. The Chantry is still relatively powerful and I will need the lyrium trade. After the breach is fixed, sweeping reforms and changes. Or maybe I will go mad with power and make myself into a god? The possibilities are endless.

Until more is revealed, I shall continue to think of her as, "the naked chick with the hat,"

Andraste may have taught that you were holier when naked.

Those puny Tevinters fled at the sight of hairy Alamarri barbarians charging at them.

@OP Well... Silver Surfer is herald of Galactus and they didn't get along well either :D

Seriously though, what other people said. It could very well be that Andraste doesn't approve of the Chantry per se. It's up in the air what she might really represent. Maybe she was even a mage herself (albeit a responsible one).

Well, this sounds good to me as I'm planning for my canon to have a Loyalist Mage Inquisitor.

Makes me wonder if the glowing hand thing is a link to Andraste and she's the one closing the rifts when you're the one supposedly doing it.

In one of the interviews the inquisitor is referenced as being "touched" by ancient magic.....

The "bucket" on her head makes me think "egyptian"; supposedly early human pyramids exist with images of qunari on them.....some entity or spirit from that time?

She could even be the ancient one I suppose.Good ol' case of mistaken identities; people think she's trying to cause the fade rifts but actually she's trying to stop them.

Yeah, I don't think Andraste would really like the Chantry, especially with what it does to mages.  She never advocated imprisoning mages for all their life pretty much.  She pretty much was advocating for mages to be responsible with their magic and use it to serve their fellow man instead of selfishly like most of Tevinter Magisters do.

So are those wings or fade rifts behind its back?

Now that we've seen what fade tears look like I am inclined to think they are representation of fade rifts. Perhaps in ancient days this "spirit" liked visiting the real world or vice-versa.

Afterall, this statue can be seen in many ancient places. Who knows, maybe this creature was the one to speak with Andraste.

Looking at that area right below his chest; that some kind of tri-pronged or horned helmet design?

Wait, is Andraste bad then? She didn't look too friendly in the trailer if that's her.

The big, green, glowy spirit woman turned and offerred the Inquisitor her/its hand palm up. Didn't seem malevolent in its actions to me at least. Could still be a villian character and being misinterpreted.

The big bad with the evil laugh at the end said the Maker doesn't exist. To me that's pretty much a confirmation that he does exist.

You have to accept Andraste as your personal savior even if you're a Dalish elf or the dragon kills everybody.

I don't see what is wrong with being called the "Herald of Andraste".

My Inquisitor, even though he will be an agnostic of sorts, will not hesitate to make full use of the "Herald of Andraste" title.  B)

*in-game*

Inquisitor :- "Come on babe, give the Herald of Andraste some sugar...most people would consider it an honor..."

Inquisitor :- "Surely you can offer a discount for the Herald of Andraste..."

Yeah, Bioware has some... trouble with the Chantry.
My biggest problem with origins is the Urn of Sacred Ashes. No matter what your Warden goes on some crazy expedition into the Frostbacks, fights through scores of dragon cultists to find what might, if legend holds, contain the ashes of some chick the Chantry really likes. You can even agree to defile the ashes, but first you get some 'pure' sample.

Personally I'd like to systematically extinguish each Chantry's Eternal Flame with... waste water. And now I'm the Herald of Andraste, mates I'm the Herald of the Elven Empire, the Vanguard of Your Deastruction...
Dammit Sovereign
