Everyone else has their own topic and The Elder One is feeling left out (probably why he is trying to take over the world), so I decided to be nice and make him one, all for himself.

Who is the Elder One? That is the mystery my friends, there are quite a few plausible possibilities, and very few confirmed facts. He controls the Venatori, he probably shape shifts into a very evil looking dragon, he has everyone (including fade spirits judging by part of the trailer) running scared.

So who could he be? I'll give you a few theories I've seen/came up with, and we can discuss and maybe we'll have this nailed down by November!

1) Corypheus - I'll start with the obvious choice, and in my opinion the boring choice. He is, quite clearly, an elder, seeing as he is almost a millennia old. He seems to share certain powers with Archdemons (possession of the tainted, his own 'calling'). He also had plans to invade the white/black city and gain ultimate power. All of this fits the bill for the Elder One, but it seems too convenient to me, and too easy.

2) An Elven Sleeper / Fen'Harel - Masked Empire gives quite a few hints about Fen'Harel and introduces us to dead Elven Sleepers, possibly showing us what is in store for DAI. An elven sleeper would exist pretty much exclusively in the Fade, Alexius and several others said, "The Elder One is coming!" as though he weren't here yet. Where could he be? The Fade! This is actually one of my favorite theories as it doesn't rely on Gods or Darkspawn for the majority of its glue.

3) An Unawakened Old God - There are two surviving (that we know of) Old Gods, yet to be tainted by the Darkspawn. The Architect (and potentially Corypheus as the two seem terribly similar) was seeking to awaken an Old God without tainting it, for unknown purposes. His failure led to the 5th Blight. There is no indication that he learned from his mistake, and even if he is dead his followers might well have decided to carry on. An awakened and untainted Old God is something the world knows pretty much nothing about, there is no mention of it in recorded history, outside Chantry propaganda.

4) A previously tainted Old God - The most common God to use with this is Dumat (seeing as his altar still held power in Legacy), and Urthemiel (OGB), but if you think about it then it could be any Old God. It is entirely possible that the Wardens sacrificing themselves doesn't actually slay the Archdemon, why should an Archdemon's soul be so vulnerable as to be destroyed by a single human soul? Maybe the Wardens simply freed the souls of the Old Gods from their captivity and allowed them to return to the fade. Regardless any previously tainted Old God could very well be the Elder One.

*New*

5) A Forgotten One - One of the ancient demons that some sources say taught humans Blood Magic. The Formless One is still unaccounted for and is a prime candidate for the Elder One. Demons are ageless so he would certainly be old enough to qualify. He also fits the criteria for a 'New God'. He would also have a special bond with Imshael, who it seems is going to play at least some part in DAI, judging by Masked Empire.

Those are the ones I've seen and came up with, what are your theories? Give evidence for or against any of these 4, or for completely different ones. The Elder One is coming, and he doesn't like to be left out (and we've got a few hundred pages to go to catch up to the other character!)

From the Trailer: This may be the Elder One in dragon form (or it may simply be a very evil looking dragon)

I think we can rule out Cory since he speaks with a weird accent, and the bad guy from the trailer was using a generic, if menacing, English accent.  I think that the only things we can establish about the Elder One is that he's bad, he likes to talk, and he wants to start a new religion.  With him as God, naturally.

That describes a great many villains.

Well it seems Tevinter are fond of him somehow...so could be an old god.

Or Corypheus.

Or Fen Harel trolling everyone again.

It's really hard to tell ...

We know Corypheus is out somewhere and he wanted the "Light" and the power of Gods.

He would also know how to breach the fade , I guess.

I tend to think Cory is a tool in the story.

Something looks like it could be Fen'Harel , he's always good at dividing everybody and that's how he works.

But Tevinter wouldn't work for an elven God...But I suppose if Fen Harel wanted to use humans , he would give another name.("Trololo, I'm Dumat!")

And Old Gods ...so far I haven't seen anything proving Old Gods are more than really old magical dragons. The Old Gods once they are tainted , are not able to make great plans. They ravage the land until they win.(they never win, so far)

Since Corypheus is tainted and still has a somewhat functionning human brain...I assume Old Gods are cunning but not super intelligent.

So...no old gods.

The Elder One was the most powerful and beautiful spirit created by the Maker who, in his conceit, rebelled against his Maker, causing the first demons to fall with him as he was cast down. He still seeks to make himself the Most High.

Eh, it's probably Fen'Harel. That was just him trolling.

One factor we need to remember, and makes me like your elven sleeper theory, is that the elder one's hatred of the Andrastian religion.

I've watched the trailer over and over again.

It seems that the elder one has yet to arrive, which is why the venatori is all about he will rise, he will come, etc. With that said Venatory are dragon worshippers, we have 2 old gods and we see a battered (looks partially fossilized) dragon. If you look closely it has 5 horns.

I personally believe the elder one is one of the 2 remaining old gods. It is mind controlling the venatori to release it from its prison. I think that masked/ hooded man may verywell be the venatori boss.

Last but not least the green glowy lady looks too much like the statue of Falon'Din

If you read up on the lore it gets quite interesting. I am probably grasping at straws but I found it interesting that it's twin had crows name fear and deceit. We know Morrigan can transform into a crow + her beginning attacks in DAO were fear based+ she was deceitful and she spent time in the fade to learn...who she learned from?

The first thing that came to my mind was thisNo member of a dragon cult has ever been taken alive, and what accounts exist from the days of the Nevarran hunters record only mad rants and impossible tales of godhood.

"Kneel before your new god and be spared ". Such a cool catchphrase. He/She/It must be an extremely powerful and cunning entity to wait for soo long to destroy/conquer Thedas. He wants to be a god. How will he achieve this? Will he merge the Fade and Thedas into a single plane of existence where he wields unlimited power? That's my theory. He will be an entirely different being from everything else encountered I think to make things interesting. I hope. Perhaps an ancient Elven Sleeper. Perhaps Fen'Harel. Perhaps an Old God or ancient Magister.

The unawakened Old God is my second favorite theory so far. There seems to be a lot of possibilities for it.

If Corypheus isn't the big bad, as many people now believe, then who would he serve? An Old God of course.

Elder One = Has to be Morrigan's son. He has the blood of Flemeth in him (who associated with a dragon) and the soul of an old god. Makes sense to me. And he is techincally "new". And remember Morrigan going on about "change" in Witch Hunt. A new "God" would certainly count as change. And in Witch Hunt she used the mirror to go to a different realm. Where he could grow and gather power and could be why they keep saying "he will come".

I'm pretty sure the main villain in the biggest Dragon Age game to date won't be a ten year old boy who may not even be born.

There is no reason to think that either being in a different realm or having the blood of an old god in him would not accelerate his age. Plus we see Morrigan standing behind a VERY VERY evil looking fellow in the new trailer. Its just a guess but I am standing by it,

I actually think it IS Corypheus. I've been listening to the voice in the trailer, and it sounds like his voice just pitched down.

Listen to the line "You cannot. Because he does not exist." It sounds like a french accent.
