Just had a thought.... what if The Elder One is the Tainted Maker??? The Black City became black upon entry or so the Chant of Light states... Unless The Elder One is who tainted it.... Damnit... now I'm gonna be racking my brain till Nov 18th...
The Elder One might be the Forbidden One, the Formless One.

I think it's the terrible presence that attacked the elves and humans in the Brecilian Forest in ancient times, like the last Arcane Warrior said. And i think the line the statue say in Witch Hunt "The prison is breached. I see the encroaching darkness. The... the shadow will consume all..." is a key. Whatever it is, I think it is imprisoned in the Black City (my theory is that is is and has always been a prison and the whole "Golden City of the Maker" is something the Chantry misunderstood) and I think it's from it that the Darkspawn taint comes from.

I'd be happy if a Forbidden One was a main villain instead of a side quest
Who knows? This game could break that tread.

Oh..... my...... god.....
This makes sense! I'm going crazy now! I want this game to be out so bad!!! But what took him so long to come to Thedas? Who is he? Is the Maker real?

Flemeth was possessed by a demon years ago and has become something else altogether. What if the demon that possessed her when she was human was the formless one? It would make sense given her incredible shape shifting abilities and her line when hawke and Merrill respawn her 'must I be in only one place? Bodies are such limiting things' added to my suspicions about how powerful the demon that she fused with must have been for her to perform such a feat after her battle with the warden.
If my theory is true what I am thinking is what flemeths/formless ones plans are regarding the elder one. Does she want him gone as might be imaged in the trailer or is this all part of her long term plans somehow? Would be interesting to find out!

Whatever the case, I really hope the "prison" turns out to be the Eluvians. Oh, you crazy elves did it AGAIN.

We know that Imshael, if he's in the game, is going to be sidequest material. It doesn't really make sense that his compatriot from the Forbidden Ones would be the big bad at the same time.

Just a guess... Nothing more...
'The Elder One' is a side quest associated with Morrigan. If you watch the clip again, listen to what is being said.
"Templars have come to kill you."
"You are a mistake. You should never have existed."
"Bow before your new 'god' and be spared."
Now, remember the story behind Morrigan and Warden's child.

After rewatching 'The Elder One' clip, I did notice the presence of Morrigan. I think the Templars are seeking to kill Morrigan, for she was responsible for bringing about "The Elder One'.
I also see a young human male in the clip, which may suggest he is the 'Elder One's' human vessel.
Morrigan's son.
Just speculation.... Just a guess.

Do you really think they would place such a great Deal of Marketing towards a Side Quest, that many Players do not even access in their World States?
It's a pretty safe bet right now, that "the elder One" is our Big Bad and that he is associated with Tevinter (meaning that he has a sizable Force of their Troops that he leads).

Did you even listen to what Morrigan said? She used Magic to harness the 'Old God' essence from the achdemon. Morrigan said the magic and demon were older than the Chantry. So, yes. Until other information becomes available, I am going to stand firmly on my theory. Regardless about if this is a part of the main quest, I firmly believe this 'Elder One' story is associated with Morrigan.
'Existance' of Morgan's son may have triggered off the events.
...and, that would explain the line, "Templars have come to kill you."

One problem. The Dark Ritual doesn't always happen.

No, it can happen. There's a difference. Cailan being killed at Ostagar is something that does happen.
They won't have the main villain be possible only if the players chose something.

The default world state are suppose to be that The Dark Ritual never happened, from what I heard. Also, that the main badguy in the game would depend on if you did The Dark Ritual or not just doesn't sound right. What, if you didn't do it then there is no The Elder One and the whole main plot are gone from the game?

The Elder One isn't the OGB

Morrigan says the old God's Essence will be transferred into the Baby. She doesn't already have it at that Point of Time as she has quite possibly never even seen the Archdemon. You can choose to have that Baby. If you don't Morrigan leaves you and doesn#t even come remotely close to the Archdemon ever. Morrigan's Son is not necessarily existent.
(Heck, even her being alive isn't completely necessary. They can very well have her die of that Stabbing at the End of Witch Hunt and not have her appear in Inquisition in these World States. That would be ballsy and cool, but sadly is unrealistic.)
Still: The OGB most likely doesn't exist. Morrigan will still likely facture into the main Plot herself, but, by Necessity, her Child never will. The OGB is an optional Decision and thus can never be used as a major gamechanging Point in any future Games.

People seem to forget literally each time that the OGB is an optional consequence.
If I had a dollar each time someone claims the OGB is either the villain or the inquisitor.

All of the old god mumbo jumbo doesn't make sense.
There are only two more Old Gods left (three if you include Morrigan's child), and they lie dormant within the Deep Roads.
Also, why would Morrigan go to the trouble of preserving the untainted soul of an old god if they were malevolent creatures bent on the destruction of humanity? Say what you will of her, but Morrigan's agenda clearly doesn't include effecting the Apocalypse. If that were the case, she wouldn't have bothered to save the Warden after the battle of Ostagar.

Dumat was the Archdemon in the First Blight and was destroyed by the Grey Wardens in the Ancient Age
Supposedly destroyed. There is no proof that he (really should be she since all High Dragons are female) is gone for ever. It is entirely possible that Dumat's 'death' simply freed his soul/spirit to return to the fade.

I had this thought when in dragon age 2 made mention of the forbidden ones after morrigan said flemeth was not even truly human anymore. It goes like this:
Flemeth was possessed by a demon years ago and has become something else altogether. What if the demon that possessed her when she was human was the formless one? It would make sense given her incredible shape shifting abilities and her line when hawke and Merrill respawn her 'must I be in only one place? It does make sense. When you kill possessed Marethari, it is stated that THE DEMON must be killed, not her at all. When Marethari falls "dead", the demon rises once again and fights Hawke for a second time. So maybe the same thing happened with Flemeth when the Warden tried to kill her. He/she killed the body, not the demon itself.

1. But who say they keep slumbering? They were imprisoned by the Maker for corrupting man but could have been broken free.
2. All the Old Gods had different personality. The one Morrigan saved was Urthemiel, the Dragon of Beauty. He doesn't sound so bad. But there were also Zazikel, the Dragon of Chaos, Toth, the Dragon of Fire, Andoral, the Dragon of Slaves (that teaches to use slaves) and Dumat, the Dragon of Silence (as in death and the one who got the magisters to go to the Golden/Black City).
The 2 that are left are Razikale, the Dragon of Mystery (and the next said to become an Archdemon) and Lusacan, the Dragon of Night.
So as you see, they are not what would be considered good gods. Urthemiel might have been considered the nicest of them (but he has a daughter called Urzara who tried to take over the world).

His shrine still worked in the Legacy dlc. Also, Corypheus's prayer to Dumat seemed to increase his power.
I think he's dead too. But there is evidence to suggest otherwise.
The statues could simply be imbued with magic in which he could draw power from. There is no reason to believe Dumat himself gave him those powers. Like if I light a lighter saying "God give me fire". As for the shrine still working - that may just aswell be a magical shrine. Dumat did not have to be present to make it work.
Of those two I would say that the shrine is actually the better indicator of Dumat being alive.

So says the Chantry. We all know that they never tell lies.
