Just noticed that Champion Mage Hawke in the trailer has the blood magic gash......which if you get to control the character or use it in a battle, means that is the only chance you get to have a blood mage experience in the game.

Presuming its not just a cosmetic feature.

Blood magic gash?

Gash might be the wrong word...smear is probably more accurate.

You don't need to be a blood mage to have that smear....

I'm sure blood magic will be used against you.

I never understood the smear.

It reminds of when my dog used to shake his head, and slobber would whip up over his nose and he'd just walk around not noticing it.

Good point; always think of the trailer for DA2 when I see that.

I doubt you'll get that much of interaction or able to control Hawke or that random Warden at all.

Not necessarily. Origins had a blood mage specialization, and the reappearance of Our Wardens has not been ruled out. That said, I doubt we'll actually get to control any returning protagonists in battle, but I would freaking love it. :)

Even if you did blood magic in DAO or DA 2 it wasn't really played upon with elements of the story or your companions. Why I'm not really bothered I can't be a blood mage this time around.

Given my Hawke was a warrior and had the mark for the ten years of his life I witnessed, I'm going with 'birthmark' over 'smeared blood'.  At the very least it would have to be a tattoo.

1) The smear of Hawke's nose has nothing to do with blood magic - any character build can have it.

2) Said smear doesn't even consist of blood. It's obviously Nutella. :P

Im just hoping Hawke will be an additional character that either joins as a contemporary companion or joins the party on a mission sort of like how Merrill does in dragon age 2 before becoming a proper companion.
