"Big announcement" scheduled for later in August

I agree with the spirit of this post but I do have one reservation.  Achievements based around MP really require you to play the game within the first few months of it's release.  Unless it's a game like Halo or COD.  Otherwise you end up with a situation where there's a slew of MP achievements but you can't get any of them because nobody's playing MP anymore.  For example I just played Tomb Raider last month but I can't even start up matches because nobody is playing Tomb Raider multiplayer or at least nobody at decent hours for where I live.  That to me is rather unfair.  But I don't have a good alternative to suggest.

An offline mode with AI bots filling in for players would work. That would definitely require more time and effort on the developer's part, but it would ensure the MP is playable years after the community dies out or the servers shut down.

It's only way I can still play any of the Unreal Tournament games, Battlefield 2, or the Star Wars Battlefront games.

Multiplayer is most certainly a big announcement... but why postpone it till "later in August"? There are a lot of people who are practically begging for MP and wouldn't it make sense to announce it during GamesCom? Fans would have been sooo happy.

If I had to guess, they wanted Gamescom to be an impressive singleplayer experience with the demo, the look at crafting, Skyhold, the character creator, etc.

Announcing MP now would've diluted that message somewhat. If it's late in August, too, they avoid being lost in the steam of Gamescom or PAX news.

It's also possible that the marketing team wanted to really impress people with the singleplayer before talking about MP.

Much to be said for announcing some things at 'smaller' events.

The gaming community wants news, and at Cons it can all hit the streets at once...

I'm still curious as to why there was such a low amount of announcement at Gamescom. Perhaps this news is big enough that they want to make sure it has it's own time to be announced. I mean, if it's something they didn't want to discuss at a huge gaming event because it's so intense, it must be pretty damn impressive.

In retrospect it seems like a good call. The P.T. demo/Silent Hills announcement would have overshadowed a Dragon Age MP announcement for the general gaming populace.

I suppose you're right, though if it even is MP, it would have made more sense to let that be known earlier rather than later since it's sort of a hit and miss deal with the players. And as much as I would love a form of MP, I can't help but feel that it's just as likely something else because of that fact. Announcing something more universally exciting, or at least generally more exciting to it's player would count more towards "big news" I think than something that is a can of worms.

I wouldn't really take BSN posts as an indicator of how volatile a subject is. ME3's MP was by any measure a wild success, and a DA MP announcement would be met with overall positive excitement.

Agreed, though I have seen many people who would rather not have MP, they are simply the more vocal I suppose. MP would be an announcement that would go over well, but I have a gut feeling that there is no guarantee of it being announced, maybe still in, but not announced later this month, simply because of all the various possibilities. Maybe they'll announce that the leaked achievements list is true, confirming both that AND MP  :P

I dont think it would be overall positive but it definitely would be less scrutinised compared to ME3 because of its success at multiplayer

I guess it would depend on what sort of MP it would entail. It will probably be seen in a better light if it feels more like that extra mode for fun than a "you must do this for X" mode. And after ME3, I don't see that happening.

I imagine EA would've done proper focus testing and market research on how popular a multiplayer mode for DA:I would be.

(They were asking about a co-op mode in the September 2012 marketing survey that leaked, for example.)

Looking at posts on a place like the BSN is a terrible way to gauge the popularity of anything, especially when they're interested in the opinions of all the game's potential players, not just a fraction of the hardcore.

Of course, definitely dont tie it to single player again but if they have too make your reward money or crafting resources for weapons and armour and not something that effects the end game

So its like DA2?

If there is one thing that always pops up to put a worry in heart, it's that all these who have previewed DA:I and enthusiastically tell us "it's a solid mix of Origins and DA2", always liked DA2. So what the H*** do they know about anything? That there aren't any re-used environments? That, wasn't what was wrong about DA2. A flaw, yes, but not the problem. And where's the Origins' part of the mix? I see some ol' Baldur's Gate in there, which raises hopes, but what from Origins is there?

Well there's the simple fact that you aren't being forced to play as human this time around, which was in Origins, and there is the return of heavily tactical, though optional, combat style. But before we jump to any conclusions, we should see what else is going on with the game. Besides, there have been dozens of improvements made to this game that make it entirely different from both it's predecessors. Having a mix of both doesn't guarantee that it will have all the traits of both, just some similarities. The ways in which it is similar to DA2 are mainly the way talents work, though they are also improved upon, as well as the way dialogue works, though that is also slightly different. That is what ties it to DA2. the similarities it shares, and that's what people are noticing, not a lack of re-used dungeons.

And actually, most of the comments pro and against come from many of the same people commenting again, and again and again.

(that's not a criticism I hope as I'm one of them)

It is not necessarily representative of those who BioWare hope will buy the game.

I hope it is muiltiplayer. I know a lot of people don't like it but anything that would make me play the game longer and justify paying $60 upfront is good in my books. ME 3 multiplayer was kind of fun.

Please no multiplayer.  It takes too much away from the single player experience.

Far as ME3 multiplayer goes, I gave that up long ago since it was way too simplistic and wasn't varied enough to keep me.

There are better places to get MP gameplay so I didn't bother, and thus I assume the same could be the case here.

Like being forced to move your mouse cursor a fraction of an inch to click a different option in the main menu.

As I see it, if multiplayer and single player are kept separate from one another, I'm fine with MP existing. Bioware's smart enough to know where their bread is buttered; I really don't think they'd cripple SP for the sake of MP in the slightest.

I'm hoping it's an announcement of the release date for the Keep. I'm really looking forward to that aspect of the game, so I can possibly choose options that I didn't do in the previous games. As for multiplayer, I'm not too keen. If it's available I don't begrudge Bioware for adding it or other players who want it, even though I won't be using it. I'll just be doing what I have been doing: stalking the forum and website waiting with anticipation for another Thedas related morsel to nimble on.

Longer? The Game already has over 150 hours of content in it. I'd say 150 hours of content is definitely worth the $60.
