All I have to say, after the absolute disappointment that was the Combat Q&A and the "eight ability limit, no radial abilities for you" revelation, it had better not be multiplayer. If DAI's gimped because they're doing some sort of mass dumbing-down of the SP game to make it more in line with an MP mode, I'm seriously reconsidering my preorder/purchase.

yeah, I'm also seriously concerned that situational spells (for example... focus? I mean, this is extremely situational, why make something like this hard to use, while it is a major new addition?) will not become worth it to invest in...

I expect Bioware needing to close a lot of angry rifts in the forums if MP is announced. I see no way for this to end peacefully. Popcorn?

No freezing in multiplayer - no tactical camera (or if there is it would have time running).

That's why opening the full radial for additional spells skills would not work and could be why it no longer exists (8 abilities only aside of equipping).

Oh - and despite asking, not one single person could be persuaded to say they would certainly not buy the game if multiplayer were in it.

Though some would delay purchase until review evidence demonstrated that it had no impact on single player.

I also don't understand why it is logical to be angry at the possible inclusion of a feature someone plans not to use

provided it is not detrimental to the single player game.

My understanding is that Focus is a separate gameplay mechanic, not an ability/spell that takes up a mapped slot. Was this confirmed otherwise?

This is funny, because if the situation was flipped and they were allowing you to use all your abilities instead of 8, I could easily see someone complaining that they were dumbing down the game for the masses by removing the need to be selective and focus on a cohesive ability set.

Eh, maybe. Just an odd thing to change after 2 games, especially if you're still keeping the pause and play mechanic. If you're not moving towards realtime combat in SP, why remove it?

You bring the popcorn.  I'll bring the frozen hot chocolate.

I literally thought, 'well, if it's in, that's probably why they didn't announce it sooner....'

I suspect for the same reason they removed regenerating health and mage healing spells. The name of the game in Inquisition appears to be proper planning/forethought and execution. Being able to map 2-3 CC spells for a character instead of 5 will make one think more carefully about how and when to use them. Or alternatively, get 5 but lose some offensive power/buffing. Opportunity cost situations such as this develop intriguing builds and strategic decision-making.

Your post seems a little alarmist and premature

the 8 ability limit is similar to both Origins and DA II on the console if you didn't pause and played the game more like an action game

and if they are replacing the combat wheel with tactical combat and something closer to the PC experience then that is a good thing

Make it all more tactical overall I guess?  They're changing the healing mechanics.  It's not like this is the only thing they're making a bit more difficult, or to really get you to think about your choices.

I'm not a huge fan of the choice, personally, but I'm not raging about it either.  Didn't Dragon's Dogma do something similar?  You could only map 5 or 6 talents and you couldn't change them or use others unless you went to rest or something?

Because it is uber powerful that is why.  You are mistaking situational for only use it when it is worthwhile.

I did play both on the console, and I still found the radial menu a necessity. Especially as a mage. Any attempt at being a utility character is gimped when you take away player options, which is what this is.

There are things I don't want mapped all the time, but still use on a regular basis - Paralyze, Mana Clash, Earthquake, the various (Element) Weapon spells, and so on.

...and you can still access them from what we've been told. You just swap those options into the utility slot. I played the same way I had my trash mob spells but things for specific foes like Mana Clash or Crushing Prison were held in reserve.  The change here is that instead of firing this from the radial slot I will "fire it" over to the active slot and then push a button.  I don't like it but on a scale of 1-100 this is about a 5.

That really sounds more tedious than necessary. Either Bioware's revamped the combat, reduced the number of skills and distanced it from the "hotkey cycle" MMO combat of DAO/DA2, or..the above MP mode parity speculation.

you're assuming there is no way to access those other abilities in combat.

I'm not sure there is any evidence that this is the case.

Especially from the limited amount of information in that Q&A

Could bring some tactics into choosing what spells or talents you want, Kind of like a mage in D&D has to memorize spells from his spellbook.

It is more tedious than needed truthfully. I agree

It just won't matter most of the time. I see this playing out this way, there are, when you eventually get to this point, more than 8 active spells you even have (and since I'm not paying attention to skill trees and leveling discussion there might be fewer overall spells to get) 8 will be assigned to slots. In most fights those are the 8 you would use anyways - seriously in generic darkspawn fight 17656383 you didn't use more than 8 spells. That is about 90% of the fights in the game where it is just lambs to the slaughter. Now you run into something further up the food chain and you have your boss killing spells (Hex of Getting Hit a Ton). You will swap those into the slots. Finish the fight and then move on...and run into the next trash mob fight and realize you didn't put Fireball back into an active slot. Then you have to go add in back in Fireball. Yeah, annoying but nothing game breaking for me.

It is later in August. Where's the announcement?

Also, announcing announcements again? Marketing these days...

I'm sorta thinking it'll be linked to PAX now.

I wouldn't be surprised if they announce something next week then say "come to PAX and we'll have a playable hands-on demo for you to experience".

(That would also explain the delayed timing, if they needed to time the announcement around when fan events were happening.)

Given how many spells a mage can memorize once they pass the initial few levels, this is not a very good comparison.
