Is there some way to do away with that awful planet scanning of ME2? I already ruined one mouse and it's terrible for the wrist (and a little more boring than watching paint dry). I'm thinking in something like a mod, DLC, cheat, console command, whatever that could make scanning a planet simple and quick.

The easiest way I know of is to check the wiki for both the maximum resources you need and the most resource-rich planets, scan only those planets for their largest deposits, and stop when you have enough.

If you don't mind cheating, gibbed editor lets you set your resources at whatever number you want. Easy.

Only bother with rich planets, only scan what you need, don't bother getting unimportant upgrades. Like if you're an Infiltrator using Sniper Rifles, SMGs, and Pistols...can just take squadmates who use those three weapons and skip shotguns and assault rifles.

Excuse me?
You have a mouse? That means you have a pc... which means you can edit your save ![]()

I recently did an ME2 playthrough without having to do any scanning. I imported a save from ME1 which gave me enough resources to get me through the game. That's one way to avoid planet scanning.

I also imported a save from ME1, but the resources didn't last me very long. I always seem to be short of platinum and element zero, while I have tons of palladium and keep finding more. The typical upgrade costs 50,000 platinum. I have to scout two or three entire systems to get that. By the way, what does the resources scanning upgrade do? I don't find it too different to the way it was before. Still getting a sore wrist and stiff fingers.

According to the wiki, the most an import can get you is 60K of every resource. Together with what you find in missions this should be enough to research the most important weapon upgrades for Shepard, but not much more.
The typical upgrade costs 50,000 platinum.
Nah, most upgrades cost around 15k of one resource. Tech/biotic upgrades need usually 1500 Eezo. The 50k platinum upgrade is only the Sickbay upgrade, which allows cosmetic change. It is not absolutely necessary (but I still research it everytime).
Researching upgrades costs less with Engineer passives.

Do some Coalesced.ini editing under ME1importvariables...or a similar name, can't check the exact name at the moment.
That will let you mod Credits, Para/Ren, Mining resources when you import a character.
Or use Gibbed's ME2 save editor, as some people have already mentioned.

Scanning can get a bit tedious, but it's quite easy. Only bother with rich plannets and only send probes on the biggest deposits. Only purchase/explire updates that you need and etc. In about 25 min you can get all the resources that you'll ever need.

I just use Gibbed save editor to get 9999999 of each mineral, on both my Xbox 360 and PS3 copies of the game.

If you're like me, who researches everything, even upgrades for weapons they don't use, then if you have a level 60 import from ME1, which nets you the maximum amount of starting resources, there will be enough resources in the starting clusters in ME2 to upgrade everything. IIRC there's around 6(7?) clusters you start with in ME2 before you unlock more after Horizon, so yeah, there's enough resources there to last you the whole game.
Mining early is the best route to go, as it won't get in the way later on when you're deep into game and focused on the task at hand. You don't want to have to go and mine for palladium when you're in the middle of doing loyalty missions lol

Also you can play as an Engineer and max the passives. That way upgrades will cost a lot less.
In minerals that is.

Warning! Using Gibbed can decrease your War Asset Number in Mass Effect 3:
Note: Due to a potential bug, if the imported minerals are excessively high it is possible that only 10 military strength will be given, instead of 100. For instance should you edit your saves to acquire 500,000 or 9,999,999 of each mineral, this war asset will be worth only 10.

Yeah, I've made that mistake before. Don't gibb yourself resources.

I would not worry about the potential loss of War Assets in ME3 for several reasons, mostly because you won't miss the 90 even if you screw it up.
On PC the other thing is that higher mouse sensitivity makes the scan move faster. This is especially true with more modern higher dpi mice that have come out since the game was released. Usually you want to edit coalesced.ini to reduce the combat sensitivity but there is a setting for gui objects like the dialogue wheel and planet scanning. I don't remember exactly which lines they are, but they can be found with a search.

Why worry about losing 90 war assets when the Mass Effect 3 Gibbed Save Editor lets you change the number?
If I have just 10 WA's from the materials, I can easily boost the total number by 90 to offset it.
Also, I know it gets a lot of flack since there aren't a lot of side quests compared to 2, but in my honest opinion:
Fetch Quests in 3 >>> Planet Scanning in 2

Fetch Quests in 3 >>> Planet Scanning in 2
I kinda like planet scanning, it's relaxing. Unless there is that one hot spot you missed and the planet doesn't get Depleted for two 360 turns!
I hope ME:Next will replace that scanning with ME1 style examination along with some sort of crafting system

The entire setting of ME3 pretty much doesn't allow for exploring, so I think they did it right with fetch quests.

I know, I know... But I just mentioned it so that when OP sees his War Assets in 3, he doesn't ask himself "why only ten? I had 999999 of those resources"

I understand you perfectly. All I can advise you is to ONLY harvest these planets. They have Element Zero and are very rich resource wise. Just scan these planets asap and you're set for ME3.
