Voxr i think you mean DA:O since you're playing a dwarf? S&S was very dull in origins but a lot more fun in DA2. Admitedly not quite as good as a dw rogue.

Hey.... I may have been human in DA2 but I'll always be a dwarf at heart. Though I found S&S to not be as fun across both games. Not compared to rogue yo! Though admittedly I did find S&S in DA2 to be more bearable.

You do realize what 51% faster means right? i you guys attack for minute and you attack 100 times he will attack 150 times. Given the stats you gave me, that Varric will deal more damage than your Hawke. not to mention you used all those stats bonuses yourself

No, he won't, and I quite clearly showed the math.  Let me repeat it for you:

Hawke

95% crit

376% crit damage

153 DPS (or damage per shot, forget, doesn't matter)

That's 554 DPS.

Varric

76% crit

212% crit damage

145 DPS.

That's 268 DPS.

Now, multiply 268 by 1.51 and you get 405 DPS...which is still far behind Hawke's 554 DPS.

I don't know if you gave Varric the red lyrium token which gives Bianca 4 rune slots and if you enchant it then he will be legendary.

I wasn't counting that OR giving someone the primal rune for their weapon since that's for a very specific part of the game.

Why would anyone play a ranger hawke is beyond me, not to mention 80% of Assassin, Duelist and Shadow spec talents are better on a melee rogue.

Safety on Nightmare and the ability to pick opponents off in any direction at any point.

Dagger does do more raw damage, but Archery is still lethal and has other advantages.

I think it's kind of silly asking others whether or not a class is "fun" when factoring in what you want to play as since you can easily answer it by playing it for yourself, but....

I like the rogue. Out of all 3 classes, I definitely had the best time (also the easiest) with it. Mostly because I favor being able to dual wield weapons in my games. I always take assassin first and duelist/shadow depends on my mood, I think both are fun; assassin is kind of hard to pass up on the highest difficulty.

Well I have just stumbled up on the Dragon Age series. I know I should have probably started with Dragon Age Origins but I just dived straight into 2 and went for Mage because that's typically what I play. I'm level 7 so I don't know what Act I've completed yet if any but I have to agree with the OP. It's fun but kind of 'meh.'

For starters, I do have the game set to pause before every fight so I can figure out what attack I want to use and I hate micro-managing so I love the "tactics" system so that my group can do what they're supposed to without me having to make all those choices for them, however, I feel like after I get one or two spells cast, my group has wiped the floor with the enemy. Now some of you are probably thinking, "what's wrong with that?" Well I just feel kind of useless other than following the story.

Secondly, speaking of story, I find it very interesting how it's all about "Mages are bad...Mages are evil.... Mages should be controlled" and yet even after using magic attacks and carrying around a ginormous staff behind me, most of the people my mage speaks to act like they have no clue he's a mage.....I mean he's wearing a robe and has a glowy staff behind lighting up the back of his head...

Anyways, I'm definitely a ranged type and have been curious about the Archer, thinking of giving another class a try. I think the fact that it's in the "Rogue" category, being able to detect traps and unlock chests would definitely make me feel more useful, but as the original poster mentioned, I hope it's also fun. There's a ton of content in this game and fun has to be had or it's pointless.

I would try a Warrior but I've never really enjoyed that face to face combat and with how quickly combat goes in this game, I think if I were to fight up close with these enemies, I'd probably get dizzy and maybe even a headache, just mashing buttons hoping I'm hitting someone lol!

So I think I'm going to give Archer a try and see how that goes. I hope the OP finds a class they enjoy, I sort of wish there were more to choose from but as I said in the beginning, I just started playing and I am having fun. The story is great and I'm definitely getting addicted!

DW Rogue is the only class able to evenly fight the Arishok  - without running around like crazy - even on Nightmare.

All you need is Stealth and Decoy + Assassinate and Twin Fangs. In my fight he didn't even manage to heal second/third time ;).

Theoretically archer Hawke can do that too... but who duels as an archer? ;).

For me, that's reason enough to try rogue.

Someone here proposed taking Shadow before Assassin. I beg to differ. While Shadow gives more survivability, good tank should be able to cover it and having Assassinate as soon as possible is a ton of fun.

Remember about taking Stealth, it's great for losing all threat and redirecting enemy aggro back at the tank. Rogues are extremely squishy. One of the DLCs has a ring that gives immunity to knockback - I highly recommend it.

One other thing, is not to disregard auto-attacks. At the beggining they seem weak, but once you crit with almost every hit for 200-300% damage on Haste, normal enemies are able to last 1-2 seconds.

Rogue is the best. I love playing as a rogue. I think my quickest time beating the Arishok in a duel is about 20 seconds. Plus lockpicking/trap disarming without having to run around as someone else.

just do a rogue archer build.  Max out assassin and don't put any points in the archery tree (it isn't that useful, no passives or activated abilities)

Duelist and Assassin are definitely champs when it comes to dealing with that oxman. So far, I've had the best time in both games as rogues, especially considering that the prologue may have a couple of chests or locked doors that require lockpicking, but there is no party yet, so you need to be a rogue to access stuff. When I first played the HN origin, I was annoyed at all the locked doors and chests throughout.

Rogue is fun. I did a playthrough from beginning to end as an archer with no problem.

I prefer playing as a mage

Mage was definitely improved from Origins for me, but the one thing that holds me back on subsequent playthroughs is the alternate sibling. Carver's death just makes more sense to me too.

Gameplaywise I enjoyed the Rogue most of the three classes.

Being a rogue is the reason why I chose to buy Dragon Age 2. I was sick of not being able to unlock chests and detect traps around my party. I also wanted to play a character who uses dual weapons. The speed is most exciting part of this game for me, but the rogue abilities in this game aren't the same as Origins. I think I have better command of the field as a rogue instead of being a mage or warrior. If I needed time to re-assess the battle while deep in it I can use the shadow abilities and turn to the other characters. Rogue armor sets are okay, but the special ones are better if you're willing to get them. I don't understand why only rogues can use a bow but that helps me do ranged attacks anyway.

It's the class I enjoyed the most in DA2 with an Assassin/Shadow build. Really effective against other one-kill Carta/Assassins types you enconter in the game.

If you need some info on class build, AreleX's guide in the Class and Build section is really helpful : link

Gonna make a dw F!Hawke

I only hope the armor improves for the next game.... still think warriors get the best gear
