I get why he jumps down your threat in a rivalry (well if you're not romancing him anyway) but I don't get why it's a flirt on friendship.

Err, what actually makes you think that her work has paid off? She smashes the mirror on Rival path, or ends up empty-handed with dormant eluvian on Friend path, since instead of consulting with Audacity, Hawke and Co kill him. So, unless she's seeking another demon, her eluvian isn't working.
In addition to the Mage Ending where Hawke and the companions flee Kirkwall. The Eluvian would most likely have been left behind.

If the Sabrae clan is back, I highly doubt that Merrill would be with them, seeing as I made the mistake of going back to Sundermount with her in my party after that verbal showdown on the summit and, yeah... well, they attacked at the sight of her. If anything, they'd have her skull on a pike if she was silly enough to try to return. As for the Dalish in general...well, I've been Pro-Dalish since DA:O. Merrill was one of my favorite characters, she may have been misguided but her heart was in the right place (The fact that Eve Myles voiced her has everything absolutely nothing to do with my opinion of her
). The Dalish may have lost sight of what's truly important (recovering their culture is admirable) but like Merrill they are misguided.
Take for instance the Exalted March on the Dales. Each side points fingers at the other for the reason for it. The Dalish wanted to be separate and to worship their gods and the humans for their part tried to force the Chant on them and got angry when the elves refused to trade with them. Basically no one is right. Same goes for the Templar/Mage struggle. Which is basically fear and misunderstanding of the teachings of Andraste to subjugate an entire portion of the populace due to something they have no control over.
Getting to my point though, I'll love to see Merrill again, though the Sabrae clan is a different story. They only member of the clan I liked died in that cave on the summit of Sundermount. I'd much rather see how that clan in the Brecillan Forest is getting on.

Subtle ninja-vanishes were not Hawke's style. Talk or fight, that's it.

Considering the majority of my Hawke's obliterated the clan, it really doesn't seem relevant.
Also the majority of the Hawke's killed Merril as well.
Number 1 is probably correct, but number 2 is one big lie, most players don't even know that Merrill can die because it's too difficult to trigger the event.

I couldn't bring myself to kill Merrill, even when I tried lol. Always had a soft spot for her I suppose.

Merril never hurts anyone intentionally. She is just always in a bad place and in a bad time :|
I don't get why people blame her for everything and hold her accountable for everything. It's not like her clan was full of adults capable of free-thought, can be held accountable for their actions. Nope, obviously Merrill used blood magic to control the actions of everyone around her.

Who are these people? Because what I saw were a lot of different people doing what they thought was best and ending up in a ten car pile-up on the highway to Hell paved with good intentions.

People tend to blame Merrill for Merethari becoming an abomination and her clan trying to kill her here in the forums.
Some people, who shall remain nameless as I do not wish to spark a flame war, have actually said that Merrill deserves to die because she destroyed her clan, or because she's an idiot or something like that.
I've bowed out of the fray long ago, save to remind people that Merrill is responsible for her own actions, Merethari is responsible for hers, and the clan members are responsible for theirs.

People also will also try to make her out to be completely blameless for the consequences of her own actions, which I find rather dubious.
Merrill's almost as controversial as Anders.

Merrill is far more tolerable than Anders tho.
She's easier on the eyes for one. Also, she likes to talk about flowers, butterflies, and molting Qunari more often than about how totally not dangerous blood magic is.

Then we have the horrible approval points that make it look like she's a demon loving idiot. Who ever did Merrill's Approval points in Dragon Age 2 really did a bad job. First of all, it's one of the reasons there are so many fans hating her because the Approval really make her sound like a demon loving power hungry idiot who makes deal with evil whenever she can as fast as possible. As an example, there is one were you get Friendship points if you let a demon possess a young mage without making questions. Another one is were you get Rival points when you destroy some evil tomes. Every thing that has to do with demons and evil, making deals or even when Hawke talks about them. If Hawke say demons are dangerous she gets Rival points and Friendship points if he say something nice.
But here is the thing. If you pay attention to what Merrill say in the game (mostly in the party banter) you find out that it's not at all how Merrill really are. She tells Anders that the mistake he made with Justice was to not realize that all spirits are dangerous and that's why she doesn't call some demons because they are all dangerous to her. In the Approval it makes it look like she think they are all friendly and trustworthy. Another thing is when she tells Anders that she spent hours planing the deal she made in perfect detail to get everything right and leave out any lope holes for the demon to use. Does that sound like someone who would make a deal with a demon quickly without thinking about it or question it?
Most of this comes from her party banter with Anders and I think maybe many miss that because they usually don't have 2 mages in the party at once (and I know people who never used Merrill because of the bad Approval) so they never hear that critical information about her.
And it's not just about Merrill. All the characters have Approval points that make no sense sometimes. In the "Legacy" DLC Sebastian gets Rival points if you decide not to release the evil Cory and try to control him. Does that really sound like something Sebastian would want, making a deal with a Darkspawn?

Who are these people? Because what I saw were a lot of different people doing what they thought was best and ending up in a ten car pile-up on the highway to Hell paved with good intentions.
The idea I've seen put forth is that Merrill turning to blood magic and messing around with the mirror is the catalyst for everything else that happens to the clan and Merethari. Had she not been so stubborn and prideful, the Clan would have moved on after Hawke showed up with the amulet and lived happy Dalish lives doing whatever Dalish do that isn't death by Hawke.
Hence the blame. I don't necessarily agree that makes it all her fault, but nor do I believe she is completely free of responsibility.
