With Star Wars 1313 being cancelled and the live action show being stuck in limbo, the chances of getting mature storytelling out of Disney seem slim.
Well according to Lucas (not that I support him), that's what he'd want. Star Wars is for 'children' anyway.
Apparently seeing people getting choked, stabbed, dismembered, beheaded, bisected, shot, tortured, and immolated graphically constitutes a children's story.

Don Bluth believed you could show kids anything as long as it ended happy.
Same principle.

Probably. Revenge of the Sith was pretty dark and fairly mature and underrated in my opinion. I don't think we'll be seeing a Dark Jedi killin' kids and merc'n folks like Ani did in RoTS, now that Disney is at the helm.
*Sighs*. If it wasn't for the ******-poor dialogue, that would probably be my favourite Star Wars film (and as far as the action scenes go, it still is).
Anyway, as far as 'maturity' goes, I'd say it all depends on how much Disney and Lucas are going to micro-manage the films. If they just let the director(s) do their thing we might end up with a fairly mature flick.
If they dictate every single part of the film without any input? Abandon all hope fans of the franchise!

Disney owns Marvel and they've been largely unaffected, considering the entire Deadpool kills trilogy was printed.
Ya'll worry over nothing.
This.
They also used to own Miramax, the studio that Quentin Tarrintino made all his movies with. They also own Buena Vista studios which is a subsidiary which made the likes of a Desperate Housewives, Greys Anatomy and Lost all of which dealt with mature themes.
On top of all that the 6 Existing StR Wars films are not exactly all that mature or gritty.

Dark Star Wars misses the point of Star Wars. It's an upbeat space opera. That's the point of the genre. A gritty, dark Star Wars reboot is just going to end up like Man of Steel - a movie that totally misses the point of the genre and the source material.

People sure have an irrational fear and sometimes outright hatred for Disney, much like EA. I've seen people genuinely worried that the new movies are going to feature Mickey Mouse as a character. Then there's the usual assumptions of "oh man they're probably going to replace the lightsaber duels with extended hugging scenes and all actors are going to be CGI gungans" or some bull**** like that.
Disney is an absolutely massive corporation that goes far beyond saturday morning cartoons here in 2014. Just as recent (within the last decade or so) examples of movies that Disney have been behind are the Pirates of the Carribean movies and anything Marvel has put out in the last few years has also been under the Disney umbrella, which I feel are no more child friendly than any other action movie put out in the same timeframe, obviously excluding R-rated films. PotC or say, The Avengers aren't exactly True Detective or The Wire, but if you'd be going into a Star Wars movie expecting that, that is on you.

Don't forget people casually killing entire planets of civilians. Tarkin's such a children's character. I think the new movies will do the series justice though. Abrams isn't an awful director, and he can't do worse than Lucas had in Episode 1 and 2. The first Pirates of the Caribbean movie was really good. It had dark moments, light moments, and was well-received, so it's not like Disney's incapable of doing something darker and for more mature audiences while still keeping enough light moments to make it enjoyable for everyone.

What I remember most about this movie was that I spoiled it by reading the comic adaptation first, and I thought "Damn! This is an AWESOME STORY!!!" Then I saw the movie, and the direction basically trivialized or over-glamorized all of the really heady interesting stuff I'd read in the comic book. I actually went back and read the comic again, and yup, same damn story but its way better. And someone posted the novelized version of the Yoda and Emperor fight (I think on this forum somewhere), and again it was awesome compared to that silly CGIed thing we got.Probably. Revenge of the Sith was pretty dark and fairly mature and underrated in my opinion. I'm one of those guys that, by virtue of nuking the EU completely, Disney has already irredeemably ruined the series for me. My mind is already made up. 0/10 trash is what everything in the series from April 25, 2014 forward is.
IMO, they never needed to make new movies. And they certainly didn't need to be focused on the big 3. I can't believe Marvel actually had the gall to say that fans of the original EU were going to love what they were doing. I had a friend at Comic-Con who told me that they got a lot of salty looks from people who were EU fans when they announced it and met with a very muted response.

Eh, they have enough of a reputation for having family friendly purity pureness that it's easy to see how people would get alienated. Especially now that it seems like Disney has their hands on SW for the sake of turning it into even more of a cash-cow franchise. One SW movie a year, possibly multiple ones... there's nothing for me there anymore.

Really? They could retcon Mara, Jacen, Jaina, and Thrawn out of existence.
It can't get a lot ****** worse.

Have you ever seen the end of the South Park episode "The China Problem"? Replace George Lucas with Mickey Mouse and that's what Disney is going to do with Star Wars. They see it as a cash-cow and they will be taking full advantage of it, storytelling will be a distant concern.

It's not Disney you should be worried about, it's J.J. Abrams. http://bit.ly/1mV1BzX
The author sounds like a douche, just saying. He basically said abrams is bad becuase I said so, look at the bad ideas he's had that I made up.

Same with the games, books, and comics under their new canon.
It's all in-house, so no outside perspectives or stories either. The games will only be through approved developers under EA's umbrella, the books are to be written by employed writers, and the comics an their distribution are own entirely by Disney.

Yes, when I think family friendly movie, I think Winter Solider and Apocalypto. I get the base emotional knee-jerk but that's all it is really. But thinking about it they don't do the things people claim they do.
Point aside though, I can see how the fear of movie burn out might work. But marvel seems to be doing pretty alright with the formula, though honestly I can see their scheduled plans trimming down soon.
I don't really see disney as a product killer since they seem to take a much more hands off approach to products creatively and even when milking franchises I don't think ever truly drove them into the ground in a decade.
