I love the character for the most part. She's adorable (sometimes its a bit too much but still).

So I went for a romance and I felt skeevy. I think its her petite elvish body combined with her innocence and cuteness. It doesn't feel like you're romancing a woman, if you follow. Especially brought home with the way she says "I love you" in bed. Very awkward.

Is it just me?

After seeing the so-called Romance arc for a while, I reloaded and skipped it. However, she does make a fine Rival.

Yes.

Never attempted it. The character looks far too young, and has the personality to match. Merrill might be an adult but she comes across as being juvenile. I found the inclusion of a romance arc disturbing for that reason.

On that note, I wish Velanna was DA2's Dalish mage companion instead.

It took me over twenty Hawkes before I romanced her. Something about her screams YOUNG and as I'm over thirty, it put me off. The romance was sweet, but not something I'd ever repeat. Mainly for the YOUNG reasons.

ROFL...I've played DA2 about 30 times and have ALWAYS romanced and run away with Merrill. I went to bed with Isabela a few times but never asked her to move in. I adore Merrill. Plus I always play a Mage and I think that gives you a connection that you may not get with other classes.

Rivalry brings out a forceful side to her personality which is a lot less childlike. Still the romance is a little bit awful. I tried it one with my blood mage Hawke but when the 'i love you' came out, Hawke chewed her own arm off and ran back to Isabela.

eventhough i'm more into Qunari and dwarven girls I romanced her because i felt it storywise... and LOLed about the noble reaction to the ubber useless champion of kirkwall marrying her. But yes, her childish attitude made her go into a "do not what" zone that make me like her a bit more. Still i don't find elven girls attractive, they are too slim and small for my tastes, i preffer dwarves: Busty, curvy and with Jennete mc Curdy facial structure

Ok it is a little bit that she feels literally too young.

But more specifically it feels like I'm taking advantage. The girl is both isolated and innocent. What she really needs from me is a friend but I feel like she'd do anything for me simply because she's grateful to have someone in her life and because she doesn't really understand what she's giving of herself by being with me.

Co-sign. For pretty much all the reasons mentioned above, Merrill's romance just feels wrong to me, and not the good kind of wrong.

Doesn't help that I don't like her anyway and wanted nothing to do with her from the start.

Also, I generally prefer to be the "prey" than the "hunter" when it comes to these things, so it's not really to my taste either.

I blame the design if you ask me. She looked perfectly fine in Origin. If they kept that look and maybe toned down slightly the wide eyed quirkiness.

I romanced her twice: once as a BroHawke and once as a LadyHawke. For me, romancing her as a LadyHawke was less awkward than as a BroHawke, and it creeped me out far less.

Nope. Too young for my tastes. Not a fan of her. Don't want to be involved with someone playing around with blood magic.

Nope! Didn't have any problems. Haven't romanced anyone else.

Merrill isn't so much "cute" in my eyes as she is "beautiful." Though some of her mannerisms are 'dorbs.

It's not just you. Trust me. I romanced her with my first few characters because she's the most likable to me. Her most common compliment from players is that she's "cute." But you don't date someone who's cute in real life. She's like a 12 year old girl in personality, looks, and her scrawny physique. Having sex with her... no. That's why with later characters I stopped romancing her even though she's so likable and lonely because I didn't want to cringe when I thought about my Hawke in bed with her.

I'll tell you another that made me cringe for different reasons. Jack.

Watching her lay in bed crying during the sex made me realize than she really needed a friend more than a boyfriend. I almost wonder if Bioware has ever done this on purpose like "Well Jack would go for it but we're going to show the player that she is not in the right state of mind to be in a relationship right now." That could be interesting if it were a little more obvious that it was intentional.

As for Merrill, we've been focusing on her looks and mannerisms and now I'm realizing thats only part of it.

I'm reminded of an episode of Deep Space Nine where Bashir cured a woman who had been unable to interact with the world, she was aware but very passive. Bashir fell for her as she emerged from that state and started to date her because he was feeling very lonely at the time. Eventually he realized that she was going along with it as best she could out of gratitude and a sense of obligation, not romantic interest. Thankfully, Bashir felt horrible about taking advantage and ended it.

Merrill is isolated, exiled from her clan and you're one of the few people in Kirkwall to actually show her kindness and you're this hero. I get the feeling that she's with you because of how all of that distorts her views. Its especially reinforced by the fact that she still spends all her time in the Alienage working on the mirror even after she's moved in with you and she won't move the mirror in even if you offer.

All that combined with her smallness and innocence drives the point home for me over and over.

If it doesn't read like that for you, great. I wish it didn't read like that for me because I really like the character otherwise.

We'll have to disagree on that one, though. Jack is my favorite BW romance.

I do not think the ME2 love scene with her through the "paragon" romance path is actually sexual, in fact, though Jack is far from shy about sex and enjoys doing it.

Review this and then see if you still feel that way. She cries, he moves to comfort, then with tears still in her eyes he puts her on the bed and goes to business. She likes sex but its always been a casual transaction with her. All these feelings being tangled up in it is confusing for her, you can see it in every scene leading up to this. This wasn't the right time to get into it. This was a time to hold her and be there for her.

Yeah, Merrill is a character that I very much prefer the friendship path with. Plus, I find her awkward recoil a bit endearing when Hawke says "You're like a sister to me." I find it's a more fitting story for her.

Also, I agree about Jack. I could never romance this character. She's clearly a damaged individual, and Shepard romancing her feels like he's taking advantage of her vulnerability.

I've seen that scene at least seven or eight times, friend. Being in bed and hovering over her a bit is not enough for me to call it sex. In my understanding of this scene, they only just kiss, caress, and cuddle. It's not like Miranda who is in the process of undressing in her scene, or Tali who states how she's medicated herself in preparation for the act.

And even if they did do the deed, I disagree that it would have been wrong of Shepard to do so. Jack for one thing is not new to sex. Even people who have been through sexual abuse can enjoy and be comfortable with it, there just may be some things they avoid doing in specific. And they're going to end up doing it anyway if they plan to get serious with each other as they clearly are by that point. Second, it's not unusual for people to cry after sex because they feel very happy and very much in love with their partner afterwards, especially those who've never experienced anything like those feelings before. Crying is not always bad. Sometimes letting those deep feelings out is a healing experience.

And let's take a look at the aftermath of this romance ...

jck3_zps90a4af44.png

... look at that picture and tell me that Jack is the exploited one in this relationship. She wears the pants and it's clear as day.

Jack may bear some deep, emotional scars, but she's not some unstable basket-case that you're making her out to be. She's mentally tough and very much capable of love (giving and receiving).

I never understood this reaction myself?

So the problem is that we're dealing with a youthful and highly quirky individual, who is incredibly childish at times, prone to stubborness when not getting their way and often comes across as slightly awkward and adorkable when it comes to romance?

That's strange, because you could use those same words to describe romancing Alistair in Origins...
