Rivalry brings out a forceful side to her personality which is a lot less childlike. Still the romance is a little bit awful. I tried it one with my blood mage Hawke but when the 'i love you' came out, Hawke chewed her own arm off and ran back to Isabela.

So much this. When I got her all the way on the rivalry end, and she put that more forceful attitude towards me I thought "Well hey now, this could be interesting." But yeah the "I love you" and the nauseating cuteness came back so.... I ran back to Isabella as well.

I tried romancing Merrill, but I just couldn't stand the demons and blood magic. She's too illogical about that stuff for my taste. So, I always go with Isabela.

Hawke living with Anders:
Leandra: I've seen how that Anders fellow looks at you. ;) | Seneschal Bran has a son about your age.

Could you imagine if Leandra really had arranged a blind-date with Seneschal Bran's son without Hawke's knowledge? That would have been an hilarious scene in of itself, because I could easily picture Seneschan Bran finding out, storming in and then fumbling for a good reason to drag his son out that's not "I obviously loathe Hawke, that's why!"

Leandra: Oh dear, I don't think that went all that well, did it?

Snarky!Hawke: Did anyone else hear "No son of mine" and "Disinherited" before Bran walked out the door... or was that just me?

My experiences with Merrill were always LOL, she'd be trailing behind me or one of the party members, and that one conversation would pop up, and she'd go,

Merrill: "I'd rather keep it with her/him."

Then I'd be like, "WTF?"

Merrill may sound naive, but she's no doubt a big girl who knows what she wants, still I think I only romanced her twice once with a male hawke and once with a female hawke. Usually i'd just friend zone her, and stick with Isabela, still the most memorable romance had to be Anders and my Rogue Hawke, only because it was my first playthrough and i didn't know how the game would end.. .. let's just say hawke was single again by the time the final battle rolled around.

I didn't much care for Merril, to be honest.

I did Isabela the second time around.

And Tallis.

It isn't that she is young. Obviously she was intended to be an adult character. Its that she has a naive, juvenile personality, paired with a character model that makes her almost look like a formless pre-teen. Her presentation makes the character seem a lot younger than she is supposed to be. That was a problem for some players, myself included.

I consider Merrill to be the worst romanceable character Bioware ever created.

As an anime fan Merrill's design didn't look fake-loli to me.

But YMMV

Okay, now I'm really curious about her Rival Romance. Does she really come off that differently?

The thing is, I like her interest in Blood Magic and the Eluvian. That's exactly what drew me to her. I like the fact that she is curious and willing to explore the "forbidden". Yes, it can be dangerous, but it can also lead to unexpected discoveries that provide great insight into how the world works. This is also what drew me to Morrigan, although I hated her survivalist attitude (I hope the romance gives her more empathy in Inquisition).

And with Morrigan and Merrill, I've established a pattern for my mage romances. Basically, my mage characters romance other mages. I'm worried about my options in Inquisition, though. All the potential mage romances are male. We don't know about Vivienne's romance status yet, but even if I can romance her, I'm not sure that I'm going to agree with her pro-Circle politics...

I didn't like it because it's "SHAME ON YOU FOR EVER TOUCHING FORBIDDEN MAGIC" over and over again.

Yes she does. She is much more... aggressive towards Hawke and defensive about her work with the mirror. I'd say she acts more like an adult.

Well Leandra was looking for a suitable bride or husband for Hawke regardless of his or her relationship status so she probably assumed that Hawke would drop the LI as a hot potato or at worst keep them on the side like Alistair. Sadly she found a suitor for herself first.

Hawke living with Merrill:

Leandra: The Reinhardts' second daughter is very interested in meeting you. :) | Those elves you're friends with, they're... rather strange, aren't they?  <_<

Hawke living with Anders:
Leandra: I've seen how that Anders fellow looks at you. ;) | Seneschal Bran has a son about your age.

Do those son/daughter lines depend on who you're romancing, or your Hawke's gender?

I romanced her with a slightly altered default fem Hawke. I did at times feel my Hawke was too mature for Merril even though they couldn't have been more than 4-5 years apart at worst. I didn't find it awkward per se, but I did at times wonder what it is about Merril than my Hawke likes. Possibly this was due to the fact I'm straight and was playing through a f/f romance I couldn't connect to, but I don't think it was that. They didn't seem to fit too well at the start due to way too much differences between them and not in a complementary way, but it improved by the end and I did enjoy the playthrough everything aside. Now as for romancing her as a default male Hawke...no. I can't get into that without feeling uncomfortable because the default male Hawke IMO looks far too old for her.

I confess, I romanced Merrill the first time then redid the game and romanced Isabella.

I'm not certain Hawke and she ever actually were in love.

Instead, they were just best friends who had sex.

(Though, the difference from what Isabella thinks this is and what they were is they were ACTUAL FRIENDS and not acquaintances with benefits)

However, I felt that worked better.

She has a quirky personality, a Welsh accent, and she's cute as hell.

That being said: She comes off more as a "little sister-type character" for Hawke, than a potential love interest.

Besides, I've always preferred Isabella anyway.

Where did that image come from, by the way?

I don't think Isabella is nearly as promiscuous as what half of you seem to believe personally. Although I think the most overtly promiscuous behaviour is if she is unromanced she becomes involved with the Blooming Rose iirc. If Isabella is in a relationship with Hawke she never moves in either, which I actually rather like. That independence. I think romancing her actually greatly deeply grows her character and that confidence she always had was attractive imo.

In regards to Merril, I have a couple of issues with it, most of which have already been touched earlier in this thread. The whole blood magic thing (especially considering the main plot pretty much of DA2), and her childish naivety. I did actually once romance her on my first playthrough with the idea of romancing all the wimminz, but the 'I love you' was so... awkward, that I really had to reload it. That and being kindly rebuffed in that scene makes it even more awkward too. In general though, I don't find her attractive at all though, but that's Elves in general in da2. I enjoyed their human-similarities in origins though, I still wish Iona hadn't been shot in the heart though :(

I agree that it shows Merrill's neediness when she comes to the mansion over a single flirt. Only Isabela is that easy. Anders/Fenris need a lot of build-up. Maybe this isn't true on rivalry, but there's indication that Merrill is in love with Hawke even unromanced by their last words in the game.

"Hawke, before we go. I..."

I've wondered what that meant.

Pretty sure she does that on rival too.

But if you think about it. Hawke's pretty much one of the only people she has left if you do all her quests. And it's sad so I get why she'd be attached to him/her that way.

It really says something that the only way I've ever gotten Merrill to turn on me was to never speak to her whatsoever.

I didn't like it because it's "SHAME ON YOU FOR EVER TOUCHING FORBIDDEN MAGIC" over and over again.

You can be all friendly to her throughout the first half of the game.  All you have to do is not give her the arul'lin holm in Act 2 and it esentially reverses your friendship/rivalry (assuming it's not locked in yet).  Hawke then comes across as a caring person who thinks the mirror is consuming her.

Her "Don't save me" scene at the Hawke estate is so touching.  She knows she's destroying herself, and Hawke is trying to be there to help her... <3

I don't think it involves taking advantage of her, because Isabela would have said so if she thought it did. Isabela both likes Merrill a lot and is quite cynical about matters of the heart; if it seemed exploitative and as if Merrill only felt obligated to Hawke, Isabela wouldn't have hesitated in bringing that up to Hawke. Merrill never seemed like she was less than eager for Hawke's love (note that during the sex scene, Merrill takes all the initiative).

As for her appearance... eh, she's an elf, they look different.

No... no, I cannot see her as ever having actually been destroying herself, nor is Hawke's "help" ever actually helpful.

Actually, it is kind of helpful. I like how sarcastic Hawke refers to the eluvian as a "killer mirror".

This despite the fact that the Eluvian never does a damned thing, and all the casualties surrounding it are caused by people overreacting to it?
