I recently unlocked the in-game console by installing the mod "Extended Final Anderson Conversation", purely by chance, then I noticed that I could type text messages in MP lobby and in-game using the "say" UE3 command, for example, type "say Hey" in console:

I've asked other players if they could see my chat message, but no one has responded yet(yeah pc mute race), so this is my dumb question, can this "text chat" message be actually seen by other players, or does it only show on your own screen?

Nice, so other players can see the message too, even if they haven't unlocked the in-game console yet?

Yeah, I've seen them when I was running the vanilla client with no mods or launcher.

Great, now you can slap on powers in the middle of a match. Someone saw the Krogan Infiltrator today. :P

That is good news, thanks, even the VoIP is superior in most cases, sometimes I prefer text chat, when the connection is not so good, you just can't hear others clearly.

I guess mine is just the "primary" console, because I haven't hex-edited the .exe file, so lots of functions like the regular UE3 command "stat fps" do not work, only found the "say" command works so far. But I've no plans to dig further anyway.

Thing is, you suffer from base cooldown.

They should see it. I've seen a player using this a really long time ago, but didn't know how it was possible. There goes the answer. :)

Nice, it would be great if more people had the mod and used it. Or if Bioware could unlock the text chat by default.

Also, what about the "improved controls mod"? Is there an auto-ban system in place for mods in multiplayer?

^ I think no one cares anymore, look at those obvious hackers on the leaderboards.

As for the "enhanced control", you can actually do it yourself by editing bioinput.json, it's quite easy. I've bind my sprint key to Shift, use to E, and roll to Spacebar, works like a charm.

Edit: yeah they should have made text chat available by default, I've seen lots of players in MP who don't have a mic.

Wait so all you do is open console then type 'say'?  Guess I will start running with console enabled in MP now. :)

^Yeah it's that simple, I used this method since I was playing Gear of War 1 co-op on pc, sometimes when the guest player stucked (it happens often) he can type messages in console so the host will reload checkpoint.

Yes.

Got flamed by a noob who thought Platinum was hard when I returned last year after taking a break of a year.  Only time I've ever seen the text chat

Computron posted a way of doing it way back when the game was still officially supported and I've seen him and others use it in game. It never caught on, for whatever reason; although, I did see someone using it just last night.

Thanks, it works! I can finally insult pugs without using a mic, and this is way way more cool, because "Verba volant, sed scripta manent "

This is all new to me but after some googling is the process:

- Download Extended Cut DLC
- Install ME3Explorer (with edit DLC option)
- Download Extended Final Anderson Conversation from NexusMods

Thanks

You just need to download the mod from nexus site and install it (of course you need to install EC first);

The readme says if DLC authorization failed you may need to use me3explorer to fix that, but I've got no such problem, just install and play, Anderson will have few more fully-voiced lines before he passes out.

The mod will also unlock in-game console for you, actually there's a lot of other ways to unlock it. I just like the mod and want to recommend it by the way.

BroJo (or another BioWare employee, anyway) explicitly said it's a bannable offense.
