Hey guys,

as far as I know, we wont see any really big cities in DA:I (at least it has not been confirmed yet) - why is that?

I would like to return to Denerim, see Val Royeaux etc.

I like being in the country side (exploring - from deserts to forests and snowy peaks), but I would love to be in a big city (again...Kirkwall was not so bad...it was just a tad limited, because we didn't see much of the country side surrounding the city), see a real palace, maybe the Val Royeaux University, the White Spire, the Grand Cathedral (not that I like the chantry much) etc.

It's just a little boring, if we only get to see "the wilds"...civilisation has so much to offer, too (problems in the city - helping out the city watch/guard for example, working with a criminal organisation (or being the head mobster yourself...for the cause of course!), assassinating important people (or protecting them) etc. :)

There might not be dragons in the city, but a hell of a lot of other things :)

greetings LAX

Priorities.

Gamers and developers dream big but developers are bound by priorities of development due to budget and time constraints.

A wish for a big city will take away from the wilderness. Even creating just one actual city takes a lot of the budget also giving us far less wilderness. Even a big building takes a lot from the developers, for example see AC Unity and how it took one whole year to recreate the Notre Dame.

A city also doesn't really work with a developer who is known for static NPCs. Bioware prioritizes companions over animating and pathfinding NPCs. Not to mention the older consoles are holding Bioware back, for example Bioware's budget for mobs on screen is rather low, if I recall about 4 different type of mobs at max thanks to the memory budget.

I would love see cities but I don't think it will work as long as Bioware creates party centric games because at most the cities will feel like they are at most villages.

Big cities can cause lag and I do not wish to lead the lagquisition any time soon.

Medium cities that looks large however should be no problems sometimes you have to give the ilusion that something is big to conpensate for other things such as lag and resources.

This post was brought to you by typos.

yeah denerim wasnt that large in terms of square feet but they did a good job of the illusion of making it seem large

I'm guessing you mean a town town, and not a fighting environment skinned with buildings and streets instead of trees and rocks...?

The problem with big cities in games - aside from resource use that people already mentioned - is what you fill them with.  Because you don't actually need that much space for the kinds of things your party is going to need.  There's only so many item, magic, and weapon shops you can have before their stock starts to get redundant.  I'm thinking of the supercities in video games I've found that aren't fighting environments, and most of them are filled with empty spaces and locked doors to create the illusion of enormity.  Things you can interact with are rare.

A city fighting environment would be neat, but I think I hub like it sounds Skyhold is, is better.  All the shops and workers close by, and an option to customize.

Well - I'd rather have a big city where I can only see certain places (like Denerim in DA:O), than having no cities at all (and there is nothing to recreate here...so no meticulous detail-work needed (unless they want to of course!))

greetings LAX

ps: Meeting the Empress (Celene) at anything else than either an army camp (she has a civil war to attend to) or her palace would be kind of stupid...meeting her in her palace would probably work best ;)

pps: Yes, walking NPCs would be needed for a city...them only standing around is kind of stupid ;) (yes, it needs work, but it makes a place come to live...see AC)

I didn't find Denerim to be "big" though, it's... alright, you can enter some buildings, go in a few streets, you pretty much have to fill in the gaps with your imagination, it's certainly not literal in appearance. I guess that technically Kirkwall was bigger (but bland, obviously). To be honest I'm fine with not having a big city. Now, of course, if BioWare disposed of a five years development time and infinite budget during that period of time... sure I guess I would have liked it to see a "proper" rendition of a fully detailed, "living, breathing, active" city like Amaranthine or, heck, even a "proper" Kirkwall might have been interesting. But alas, indeed, money, time and resources lead to constraints and priorities.

It's Thedas, though, I wouldn't have wanted to see BioWare spend too much time on one or two "big" cities, which might have provoked the wilderness to be blend like TES Oblivion's was (without mods). And honestly, for now if I want to play in a "fully interactive" city based in a fantasy setting I'd stick with Skyrim (but to each their own). Again, I'm not saying that a big city in the world of Dragon Age wouldn't be a welcome addition (hell, especially rendered in that shiny Frostbite engine), sure it'd be a nice extra. But for now the way that DA:I is presented seems to be very satisfying (seems to have a good balance between large wilderness and detailed-enough settlements and towns).

As much as I love Hubs, I think I'm generally satisfied with what we've seen + the promises of the Skyhold along with the various keeps. I'm sure we're gonna have two at the max, maybe not even two big cities but just one. I do hope I"m wrong because I love exploring huge towns in other RPGS especially JRPGs

I thought we were going to Val Royeaux... Didnt I see screenshots of a palace or something. We are also supposed to be going to Halamshiral I thought (which although it might not be a city per se its certainly urban)
