That's great. Now, if you could just get BioWare to fix the story...

Not my mission, my friend. I'm just here to show how the original plots, character arcs, etc established in ME1 and ME2 should have played out, if EA hadn't rushed the game

I admit this is slightly better then what we got. I would remove all the ME2-type recruitments, but overall its a nice fix.

By recruitments I just mean that the characters are recruited to the war effort. Most of the Normandy's crew is comprised of temps which are available for use during their story segments and a few universally accessible mission. For instance, Liara (like most of the cast) is a temp squadmate. She has to run the base after all. But there are pivotal missions where she and any squadmate are available.

Two words -- "Shiala" and "recruited" -- and I'm sold. When is the projected release date?

Yep. She's supposed to return to Liara as her personal guard (just like Benezia) and permanent squad replacement.

Did you include Priority: Eingana and a priority about the Turian Facinus Group? If no, no bang.

Not sure what Eingana would serve for the story, but theres no reason the Facinus group couldn't be a war asset sidequest. Neither are pivotal to the plot, and Eingana might work better as an exploration hub for ME4, but they are intruiging.

Maybe a little too many squadmates, but that's without me looking at the "read more here!" part.

Like I said, the core squad is about the same as the official ME3 (6-7 people), but the majority of the cast is available for whatever race/political arc specific to them. When I say something like "recruit Wrex" I mean he is recruited to the war effort. However, for the entire tuchanka arc and a number of other plots, he is available as a temp squad mate. Same with most other characters.

Am I missing something? Half of that makes no sense to me. Is some of it just your own ideas? If so, you might want to elaborate!

Also, how would they possibly fit that all into one game?

Did you include Shep's trial? I saw nothing of Shep's trial, and that part is what made people excited for the beginning of ME3.

You did not adress the issue of too many "important" characters from ME2, any actual fix whould require that at least 3 of ME2s 12(!!!) squadmates get cut out of the series entirely.

WHAT IS THIS?

Its my ME3 rewrite. Well, the 50% or so which is completed. While it needs editing and organization still, I figured I might as well dump what I have. This story fully incorporates the choices made throughout ME1 and ME2 (even minor choices) and weaves them into ME3's storyline in what I hope is a believable story. The story was easy to conceive because it was based entirely on foreshadowing presented in ME1 and ME2, and pre-official ME3 media (DLC, books, comics, movies, etc). As such there are many characters, events, and scenarios that happen in this game that are not part of the official game. I honestly did not use my imagination for anything other than embellishing these foreshadowings. An example of this could be the importance of Klencory, and the 'beings of light' seen by Kumun Shol, a concept first presented in ME1. This tiny world building element plays a big part in my rewrite of ME3, because it was foreshadowed to so. These foreshadowings ultimately bring my story of ME3 to what I hope is a satisfying conclusion for the series, no matter the choices Shepard made along the way.

WHAT THIS IS NOT

This is not the official ME3 game with a different ending. This is a very different story from the official game, albeit with similar elements to it. I think you'll find, however, that the story and its elements are very 'appropriate' --  all you have to do is look at ME1 and ME2, and think about how certain plot threads were originally designed. There are many similarities between my rewrite and the official game however. These are because many events were foreshadowed in earlier ME content. Shepard battling against Oleg at Omega or using an ancient device to stop the reapers is not me copying the official game's story, it is me taking up elements of earlier established plots and running with them. In these cases Bioware and I came to the same conclusions.

This is not a stand against the official game or its developers/producers. Bioware is full people who are clearly passionate about their games. For now I will keep my personal thoughts on the official ME3 private. This is merely my head canon, based on (you guessed it) the foreshadowing from previous games.

This is not the ending that "'your characters deserve'". This is the story that was foreshadowed for them. Whether they live or die; are major characters or insignificant; this is what I believed their roles were going to lead to.

This is not a hopeful plea for recognition from Bioware, EA, or any other developer to remake Mass Effect 3. I am fully aware that, to many of you, this is an utter waste of time not worth any attentionFor those of you who think so, please treat my rewrite and thread as such.

This project is not finished or particularly well organized. My apologies for both of these things. I will be working on organization as I go along.

WHY BOTHER?

  • It is taking up too much room in my head, and has been for years. The ideas, the plots, the characters, the roles, etc are all consuming too much of my brain power. Writing it out helps me. If I'm willing to write it out, I might as well share it with passionate fans as well.
  • I've been working on this for a long time. Two years to be exact. I want to finish this, not just give up.
  • Because its fun for me. Tiring, but fun.
  • Because I hope at least one of you will appreciate this.

That's it. I am not here to bash Bioware, or their fans. I am not here to bash the official game, or other fan rewrites, or anything else. I am expressing my head canon. If you hate the idea of a rewrite, then this thread won't help you.

WHEN DID THIS MADNESS START?

2012. I started this a month or so after the release of the official game. I planned on finishing that summer, and got pretty far into it. However my schedule with college, work, and socializing stemmed my devotion for a while. It was only earlier this year that I really picked this project back up.

WHAT DOES MY REWRITE CONSIST OF?

  • A Foreword -- which will only be made public when it is completed. It will essentially detail everything written above in this forum post.
  • An overview -- which is almost set in stone. There are a few elements that will be altered (the importance of the Collector base will be edited, and Prothean Javik will be removed completely, among a few other things). I will be linking you characters, story elements, etc with it.
  • Character bios -- most of which are done. I will of course be taking requests for any and all characters (major or minor) that you want me to work on next, and I greatly appreciate if people would let me know about inconsistencies in logic, foreshadowing, plot relativism, etc so I can fix them right away. Also for some characters, their bios are notably shorter than others. This is because the foreshadowing presented in ME1 and ME2 was very limited (think Grunt, Jacob, Jack) in comparison to those who's foreshadowed importance was very strong (think Kasumi, Wrex, Legion, etc). I would love if you would openly or privately discuss what you think their role should be in my rewrite. I can write basic bios for the sparsely described characters, but I could always use opinions.
  • Plot device descriptions -- of which there are only a handful in total. Right now I think there are only two written.
  • Missions. Simple enough. Many missions, however, are contained in character bios (remnants of my earliest drafts of the rewrite). I will be editing these.
  • Story element descriptions. These are found in notes I make throughout bios and descriptions detailing the importance of certain aspects of the story, particularly those which, at first sight, appear to be a jump in logic.
  • Game play changes -- of which almost nothing has been written.

Please note that, despite the fact that many characters and events have different roles from that of the official game, I have still kept their official names/titles. I have done this so that my readers (and myself I suppose) have an easier time keeping track of the story's happenings. Things like the Leviathan of Dis, the Crucible, James Vega, etc may all be distinct in my rewrite, but I saw no reason good enough to change their names if it just confused people.

I hope you all enjoy this project of mine. It has a long way to completion, but I think that this universe and its content are worth the struggle. Thank you to everyone who reads my content. Please feel free to ask me any questions, give me suggestions, or discuss the meat and potatoes of this rewrite.

Yes. The importance of Shepard's trial is built up for most of the game, and comes near the climax of ME3. Shepard is forced to answer for many of his most important decisions throughout the series, including the Alpha Relay, the role of Spectres, the potential loss of crew mates, etc.

You did not adress the issue of too many "important" characters from ME2, any actual fix whould require that at least 3 of ME2s 12(!!!) squadmates get cut out of the series entirely.

I refuse to believe that there can be too many important characters. Furthermore, for me to simply cut three of ME2's cast is making a massive mistake. I can't just ignore their existence, or potential importance. They happened -- and many of them had significant or subtle foreshadowing.

Depends on what you call "best". You get a very different story, with Shepard facing most of his trials with new faces, and having to remember dead friendships and romances, and having much fewer "ins" to organizations that would have other wised helped. Loyal squadmates mean that Shepard has more authority and stakes in the future of the races. No Tali means no authority on admirals board. No Wrex means Wreav does whatever the hell he wants. No Samara means Liara has to face the matriarchs alone, with little credibility. etc etc. You end up missing out on a lot of content.

Because ultimately the endings are based on two factors, the readiness of the crucible (through scientists and prothean VIs) and the readiness of the military (through recruiting important characters and forces), you only need a handful of characters to get the "best possible war outcome" but with more survivors comes  a happier ending.

The best is the breath scene. I've done playthroughs filling the memorial wall completely with names that weren't on the wall because of no room and still got the breath scene. What I like to see is that all squadmates can die depending on the situation and not have it with Shepard dying to kill one or two squadmates

I see. You should probably read my project overview then, because this an edit of ME3's ending -- its a complete edit of ME3's story from start to finish. There is no "breath" scene in my story. Sorry for any confusion.
