Hi all

as u all know Bioware is one of the few developers on planet earth that actually cares about the massive amount of guys and gals that like something a little different than the rest :P

as i was watching a lot of new game trailers and stuff I noticed the amount of insanely hot men everywhere... battle field... CoD and even star citizen all have attractive men on covers or as leading "heroes"  or just thrown around trailers as crew men or random NPCs ...etc

I was thinking that perhaps sub consciously the gaming industry is "shifting" if that can be a word for this....

I mean for ME personally a hot guy in any game (especially one I can nom nom) is a HUGE selling point like I would GET the game even if its meh-ish

I hope that one day we can even start saying : " oh damn look at that guy on the cover I'D TAP DAT" without people running away in fear :P

if u have any nice game eye candy that I might have missed (I saw most from ME and DA :P) u can also post that

I saw this HOT guy in the new constellation ad for star citizen and i was slobbering all over the keyboard, if u se it its the coms guy on the right of the captain int eh space ship :P

Is it just me, or did the bone the alien used to crush the bug in that ad look weirdly phallic?

I am not sure that gaming is turning to hot men to attract a niche market segment. Now given Bioware has opened the doors for more game developers to have openly gay characters I just don't see a lot of developers doing this. I think the whole awesome looking guy on covers and in ads is probably because that appeals more towards male gamers to want to play, they like the idea of being the bad ass in the room and thus more inclined to play them.

That isn't to say in the future we might have more alternative heroes out there just I don't see the ads and lead characters as anything different or unusual.

LOL'ed at this  Can't "like" since I've reached my quota for the day :( But I totally agree, I would never just buy a game because the guy on the cover looks drool worthy, cause what would that help me if the game sucks? Of course it always helps if he is good looking but the game itself has to be good first and foremost, I care about the game experience, playing a great game, that's why I play these games, otherwise I might as well go to a porn site and drool there LOL.

Totally great that everyone thinks that because there's a hot person on the cover, we Americans will always buy it...

Eh, as long as you aren't totally ragging on us, it's cool. In that case, I just remember that we have the ability to fight the rest of the world and win.

Physically attractive men on video game covers is not a new phenomenon.

That's right son.

I bought Torment. So, hot guy on a game cover is NOT a personal reason to buy.

To be quite honest, if the cover has a hot chick on it, but the game is crap, what was even the point of getting it? I mean sure, the cover could LOOK nice and all, but I don't play games based on how nice the box art is. I look at gameplay videos and read up about the story and characters before I say "yes, i'm definitely getting this game."

Using attractive looking people in marketing material is not anything new. We've been doing it since marketing was a thing.

As far as characters in games themselves, in most cases I think it's just fine leaving the sexual orientation undefined. I find it stupid to include characters that are gay just so the developer can say "Hey look, we included gay people!", and often those characters are poorly written and seem to exist only to remind you constantly that they are gay(or part of any other group of non straight white guys that they're trying to appeal to).

In something like Mass Effect the choice is nice for the people who want it, but I don't think people need to start including every group of people just for the sake of saying they included them.

More like punching random dude in a club for hitting on princess implant and slapping her as well for good measure.

No, ideal men and women have been portrayed in all forms of media and advertising since the beginning, as Cyonan pointed out. Having a swole badass with some kind of weapon on a game cover isn't new and usually done for the purposes of a male audience identifying with and inhabiting that character rather than getting aroused by it. If you get aroused by it as well then that's just a bonus for you I suppose.

As for more specifically gay characters in games, I think it's fine but should be done sparingly and done well. Homosexuals are, frankly, overrepresented in media. While this isn't the case in video games yet, it can quickly spiral to the level that television is at if developers aren't mindful of it. At that point it's less of a statement or relevant and more like an item on a checklist.

I can tell you categorically that it is not an American thing. It's a "marketers think men will buy this" thing.

I was just kidding .. Or maybe it was a bit trollish .. not sure. Subtle trolling ? It was simply too much tempting adding ''american'' it lol. When I wrote this I was thinking with a lil smirk '' This is going to ****** some people off . Ah and let's do it anyway lol ''

So If I offended any american. I am sorry. I am a french canadian meself. Yes. I know who's Celine Dion and I do eat poutine.

Yes I also love hockey and my favorite team are the habs.
