Is it possible to define tactics that influence how the characters move?

I basically start all fights by making my mage (whether it's Hawke or Bethany) run into the center of combat, so she can cast cone of cold and can be defended by the tank at short notice, when reinforcements/assasins pop up. When playing as warrior-Hawke it means constantly switching to ranged characters to keep them close (or not attacking the ranged enemies in favor of defending the ranged group members), while playing as a mage-Hawke means either running after the melee characters or micromanaging one of them to stay close.

In Tactics, there are options for one to perform actions and defend others in the party. I often use Varric to help defend and stay close to Merrill as they are both kept at range for my game; this style could be used for other non-Mages, too.

Movement is hard because your orders tend to be generic.

For mages with AoE things you can set Enemy>Group More than X and they will move towards a cluster of foes like you usually encounter if something with limited rnage is your priority spell. Problem is that if that cluster breaks up they lose interest. For what you want your best bet is to move her manually and then let the scripts run from there.

To protect the mage you can set a tactic to "Attack>Attacking Party Member: X" Usually with Aveline she has 2 sets of instructions. One is to use all her powers on anything attacking the mage (I usually use same one for the whole game game) and the other is to attack closest. Attack>Closest is last and the defend the mage instructions come right after Health < 25% Healing Potion command.  That will ensure there is usually an escort with her at all times.

A good idea would be to set tactics to get party members to move around, like having Aveline or Fenris attacking an enemy hitting Anders with a melee attack.

Thanks, that helped somewhat.

If you want Aveline to get aggro from the melee attacking Bethany in your scenario, then you can try

1.Bethany: Health >75% -> Move to Tactic 3

2.Bethany: Being attacked by melee -> Taunt

3.Enemy: Using melee attack -> Use condition for next tactic

4.Enemy: Attacking Bethany -> Attack/Bash/Whatever depending on how you've build her.

What this will do, is that when a melee attacker hits Bethany, Aveline will target him and attack him. If Aveline can't get aggro with her autoattacks and the enemy continues attacking Bethany, when she reaches 75% health, Aveline will taunt.

This works cause the act of Aveline attacking a melee enemy, makes her move near Bethany, so when Bethany's health drops, Aveline will already be in position for her Taunt range to reach all the melee attackers. The only situation where this tactic fails is when Bethany takes too much damage from ranged attacks taht triggers the first tactic forcing Aveline to taunt on the spot, so you should be careful with this to not run ahead with the mage before your frontliners get aggro from the archers or without some form of defensive cooldown.

Like for example, add to your support mage a line

Bethany: Being attacked by melee/ranged -> Cast Barrier

Or for your rogue,

Bethany:Any -> Chameleon's Breath
