One of the great things with RPGs is seeing your character develop and grow. However this thread is simply dedicated to the gameplay and combat challenge of such growth. For many of us (those who play nightmare in particular) the challenge is just as important as the story and other aspects. And many consider themselves powergamers (does not exclude roleplaying in any way). The optimal challenge has traditionally been the last boss. But some games provide an ultimate optional challenge/encounter for those players that wants an almost impossible fight.

Take the ebony warrior from skyrim:

468px-Ebony_warrior.jpg

Or the weapons from FF7:

1308672646_em_weapon.jpg

These are just some examples.

Why add?

1) It does not interfere with casual gamers or people that do not want to fight them. These are normally not a part of the progression towards the endboss, but an optional encounter.

2) They provide the ultimate challenge, designed to be almost impossible to beat. Normally Id say this is what endbosses are supposed to be, but developers tend to make endbosses doable due to people complaining too much if the endboss is too hard.

3) This solution appeases hardcore / powergamers without hurting progress for "regular" gamers, and are surprisingly easy / little time consuming to implement (I think?). All you need to do is to create an additional cave or area with said boss.

I think Nightmare will be challenging this time around. But even so, there comes a point where your character feels so powerful - even on nightmare - that there simply isnt any challenges left.

So please Bioware, if you have time - add an "uberboss" to the game. One which will surely bring downfall to your overconfident character that thinks he/she has become an unstoppable demigod.

Id like thoughts and opinions on this from other people here, but I cant really think of a reason anyone wouldnt want this - as it doesent affect people that dont want to engage said boss anyway :P

Yeah, some optional very tough bosses would be great. I don't know if we will be able to continue playing after we finished the main story, but if it's possible that would be a great motivation to strenghten and optimize our characters, search for better gear, evolve our tactics and so forth. But they should be really hard to beat, not like the sidequest bosses in Dragon Age 1 and 2.

There already are optional bosses in DAI, the dragons.

I hate these in games.  It is a long and tedious affair that I have never seen done well.  I also think it breaks the world- why does this thing exist?  Why did it not take a place in the giant world-shattering struggle the game is about?  Why is my character killing it or is it trying to kill my character?  Also, for the completionists, having to grind and grind as one has to do in Final Fantasy games, and find all the ingredients to make the weapon to be able to challenge the beast... no fun and adds hours to a game for no reason.  I like doing every quest and freeing every area, I don't want an area with something near impossible that exists only for me to kill it.  I don't like bosses to begin with, adding a superfluous one lessens the game.

Man, I loved all those optional bosses in Final Fantasy games, those were the days :D and they would always give good rewards. Something I love about action RPGs is the ability to have huge, terrain destroying, terrifying bosses. <3

For the record, DAO had the optional boss Gaxkang, and DA2 had several including Xebenkeck.  A codex related to Xebenkeck notes that she was one of four ancient demons who taught the Tevinters blood magic - Gaxkang, Xebenkeck, Imshaeel, and the Formless one.

Also, the Devs have talked about the dragon battles, and they sound a lot more epic and complex (with parts having their own life bar.  Every DA so far has had an optional high dragon, so why not this one? :)

Ohh nice. With dragons as someone mentioned + this, I guess this may actually be in the game. I personally favor story and characters first, but the gameplay challenges of combat is almost as important for me.

Its just that in so many games, the endboss turns out to be a pushover, like in Dark Souls 2.

I can read a book if I want a good story.  If the gameplay isn't also exciting, then I'm not interested.  Optional superbosses sound like fun, and if a "completionist" gets upset that they have to grind to face one, they can change the difficulty to "casual."  Problem solved (IMO you should get little or no loot from such enemies if they lose a certain percentage of health on a low difficulty setting, that way you can't just switch back to Nightmare before the final hit to get the best rewards... anyway enough with that tangent....).

As people have said, the "Forgotten Ones" of DAO and DA2 sort of fit this description, but they were not very impressive if you compare them to beings like Ebony Warrior and Yiazmat.  They were merely optional bosses, not superbosses.  Xencebek, was actually pretty weak.  The only challenge it presented came in the form of all the damn underlings it spawned.  In my most recent game, I clowned Gaxkang (sp?) with an anti-magic ward and standard revenant tactics when he transformed.  Not a big problem.  There were a few others like Flemeth, Hybris, etc, but again, I don't really consider these "superbosses."

Only time will tell if the dragons present a similar level of difficulty or if they will be more in line with the Emerald and Ruby Weapons.  I highly doubt the latter, but you never know.

So far it seems that dragons will be our optional boss fights, I just hope they find a way to make them more unique individual encounters, than say vanilla Skyrim

rofl... well, there is that... I still don't want gameplay to suffer because of too much focus on story.  :P

I didn't.  It has flaws, but it's highly enjoyable for a bunch of reasons, including the big creature battles.

really enjoyed those.

they don't block game progression, but it's great if you beat them.

similar to forbidden knowledge and pride unbound, I presume?

Here's hoping.

Absolutely LOVED that game.

The story was barely there, but everything else made up for it several times over. IMO it's the best Action-RPG ever made(so far).

The gameplay mechanics, character creator, the monsters(especially the large ones), the dungeons, the exploration, the high level cap, new game +....it was damn near perfect.

I just hope Capcom is smart enough to actually make a sequel.

I think the hardest optional boss in the series so far (in fact the hardest boss, full stop) is Malvernis from the Legacy DLC. Certainly the one that took me the most attempts to kill on Nightmare. Although I confess to having never beaten Xebenkeck in a fair fight - she's incredibly easy if you just kite her away from her many, many friends.

I look forward to whatever optional monstrosity we get in DAI. (Imshael? The Formless One? Imshael and the Formless One, at the same time?)

I love mega bosses, they're so gamey. Just what I look for in a game.

FFVII was the last game that made optional boss fights worth it.

Up until then, optional bosses would drop tons of XP & money. Most of the time they dropped weapons, armor or accessories that were considered the strongest and best in the game. Those items had no negative effects, they were superior in every way.

Then FFVIII onward(and just about every RPG series since then), optional bosses stop becoming worth the hassle.

Nowadays they usually offer No XP, money or loot. Just goddamn Achievement/Trophy.

And if by some chance they DO drop loot, it either has slightly above average specs or have one real good stat bonus and several negative bonuses/status ailments.
