But by the time you got them they were useless, because you'd already beaten the hardest thing- probably all of the things.
Please add an optional "uberboss" in the game before launch!

They already have them. DA I is taking its lessons from Final Fantasy very well.

I can read a book if I want a good story. If the gameplay isn't also exciting, then I'm not interested. Optional superbosses sound like fun, and if a "completionist" gets upset that they have to grind to face one, they can change the difficulty to "casual." Problem solved (IMO you should get little or no loot from such enemies if they lose a certain percentage of health on a low difficulty setting, that way you can't just switch back to Nightmare before the final hit to get the best rewards... anyway enough with that tangent....).
As people have said, the "Forgotten Ones" of DAO and DA2 sort of fit this description, but they were not very impressive if you compare them to beings like Ebony Warrior and Yiazmat. They were merely optional bosses, not superbosses. Xencebek, was actually pretty weak. The only challenge it presented came in the form of all the damn underlings it spawned. In my most recent game, I clowned Gaxkang (sp?) with an anti-magic ward and standard revenant tactics when he transformed. Not a big problem. There were a few others like Flemeth, Hybris, etc, but again, I don't really consider these "superbosses."
Only time will tell if the dragons present a similar level of difficulty or if they will be more in line with the Emerald and Ruby Weapons. I highly doubt the latter, but you never know.
the encounter, as whole, makes the boss.
xenecbek and gaxkang are indeed super-bosses, but each had to cope with its own game framework shortcomings: desire demon crap ai in da2 and mana clash in dao.

Yeah, that's true. I was wiped out by the desire demon and possessed Templar encounter in Broken Circle far more times than against Xencebek. Even if you don't run out of the room, Xencebeck just seemed far easier to target and kill in a short time, and then it's just a matter of surviving its minions. The Broken Circle demon, on the other hand, had Cone of Cold, Horror, and I think even Crushing Prison. In addition to that, you had to fight that Templar who could nullify all of your team's magic buffs while simultaneously stunning all mages. Eh... sorry to go on about that but it's probably my favorite DA:O battle....
Anyway, I was going to mention the Nexus Golem's Gauntlet but I figured the post was getting too long... sometimes a well-done encounter can feel like a boss fight. The only problem I have is that aside from maybe Hybris, there were few bosses that really made you work for the victory. Like... a "superboss" should be able to kill one or more party members quickly at almost any time during the fight while having enough health and defensive abilities to survive or nullify your attacks for a very long time. The DA series has had some great battles and bosses, but I think they fall short of "superboss" rank.

Both DAO and DA2 have featured optional "uberbosses." DAO had Gaxkhang and the High Dragon. DA2 had Hybris, Malvernis and the Sky Horror. Why would you think there wouldn't be any in DAI?

When I think superboss, I think an enemy that requires a heck of a lot more strategy than "hit it with the metal bits or shoot it with the magic bits." That's something Bioware hasn't done too much.
Here are a couple of examples from Final Fantasy XIII.
Maybe it's because Bioware's "Normal" difficulty is nerfed or something, but I can't imagine anywhere near such a strategy in one of their games.

Lol, no. Let me check the real name.
It's this: Vercingetorix. According to the Final Fantasy wiki, "Vercingetorix was a chieftain of the Arverni tribe during an unsuccessful revolt against Roman Forces during the last stage of Julius Caesar's Gallic Wars."
I don't know if it's a good thing or a bad thing that the developers of that game have way way more historical knowledge than i do.

Heh, yeah, I was just doing that (years ago now) because the actual name still seems like gibberish to me.

When you say uberboss I think Final Fantasy creature just trolling an area post game. I don't mind tough fights that have a quest or story relation, but I don't like damage sponges who are suddenly able to nullify all your attacks but one weak one, or kill party members with a glance. I didn't find uberbosses able to kill because strategy, but because ultra weapons and many items and some luck. I don't find them fun at all.

Getting flashbacks of Yazmat from Final Fantasy XII. Somebody did a speed run of that fight:about 60 minutes. I hope we don't get anything like that.

Yiazmat is the most extreme example though... last I heard, it was the longest boss battle in video games. I'm actually astonished by that speed run time because it took me several hours to defeat it. Just so that we're clear, I am not suggesting anything on that scale. I fought that creature once and would never consider doing it again. ![]()

Well Bioware took some inspiration from XII, so whooooo knooooooows...I don't think they've designed anything NEAR as tedious as that though.

What? Did they actually say that? FFXII had to be the most frustrating game I ever played for all the wrong reasons. Random rare enemies, random loot drops, random chests, random limit breaks... and those flipping hunts. Just spawning the Behemoth King was a pain.
The Kingdom Hearts series has a lot of awesome, crazy hard bosses but they are actually fun.

No, they didn't say that. I'm talking about the DA series in general. They took the combat straight out of XII--the tactics system is the gambit system.

Man, I loved all those optional bosses in Final Fantasy games, those were the days
and they would always give good rewards. Something I love about action RPGs is the ability to have huge, terrain destroying, terrifying bosses.
I love old-school Squaresoft optional bosses something fierce. I don't know that I'd say they always gave good rewards, though. FFVIII's Omega Weapon dropped a certificate telling you that you beat it, FFVII's Ruby Weapon dropped a Desert Rose good to exchange for a really low-stat gold chocobo, Ozma dropped FFIX's eighth Protect Ring, FFX hosted a wide array of optionals without much reward...
Still, though, it's nice that they were all in there, and sometimes they really did give out plenty. I miss that dearly.

I love FFXII's battle system, and that's coming from someone who normally doesn't really weigh battle systems too highly on my list of things that have to be great for me to enjoy a game. But all the rarity would definitely have driven me up the wall if I cared to collect/complete things in video games. I love the hunt system, though. I've done most of those on all three of my files.
Not really a Kingdom Hearts fan, but I can see why the combat there would be more satisfying. I'd rather look around an inviting world (which I consider FFXII to possess) for optional fights than go inside a coliseum and have them all lined up for me, though. Of course, maybe there are a bunch outside the coliseum in the KH series? I wouldn't know, I've only beaten the first game.

It's just like, what do you even need more powerful loot anymore when you've just defeated the baddest mofo in the whole game?

True enough, and if the hide of the spectral tarrasque can be made into glittering rainbow armor, I don't care what its stats are. ![]()

I want the über loot to be the strongest weapon, so when I play a New Game+, I will be able to go around and roflstomping everyone.
