I don't intend to pursue this topic any further, but how is feeling that Dallas could "take them (Denver) in any setting" unrealistic? As I said, we're a much better team that we were last season and we almost beat them then. They have improved as well, but not enough for me to believe they're some kind unstoppable juggernaut that simply can't be beaten, which is what you seem to be intimating.

Well when you say the Cowboys could take Denver in any setting I would say that is implying a lot, but maybe that wasn't your intention. I don't think there is any reason to believe that Dallas based on the data we have right now is on the same level as Denver. Obviously we know Denver is a very good team (the best in the AFC). And regarding Dallas, I'm not drawing any strong conclusion about them just yet (small sample size) but things are looking pretty good so far. Could Dallas beat Denver in Denver? Yeah sure its the NFL anything can happen, I wouldn't be betting any money on it though.

I want to apologize if I've hurt the feelings of any Raiders fans. This is a game, after all. But the way the NFL draft and pay caps are structured, there are numerous opportunities for poor teams to improve over time. This article in the UK's Guardian describes what I'm talking about:
http://www.theguardi...ialist-game-nfl

The Oakland Raiders have not reached the play offs or had a winning record for about 11 seasons. So, what the Raiders need to do first is address their management and owner issues. Their fan base doesn't deserve this kind of a team and they need to make that felt in the owner's wallets. New owners might be a step in the right direction.

As for the Dallas Cowboys, I'm NOT a Dallas fan :P but I respect the progress they've made. This coach, Rod Marinelli, has been doing a good job with them:

Forgive me for posting this again, but it's just too funny. And no, the Eagle's Jeremy Maclin wasn't hurt:

Speaking of the Cowboys, they are tied 10 to 10 with Washington going into the 4th quarter. And Tony Romo was carried off the field at the end of the 3rd quarter after taking a knee to his surgically repaired back. I hope nothing really bad has happened.

Washington 20 - Dallas 17 Washington Redskins beat Dallas Cowboys in overtime. What do you all think of THAT!  Obviously, I know nothing.

(Here's week 9's schedule link for consideration, once everyone regains their composure.)

Pretty shocking. Washington always seemed to blitz at the right time, and bluff the blitz at the exact right time as well. They also have some very good pieces on offense, like DeSean Jackson (can't believe the Eagles let him go to a divisional rival for nothing) and Pierre Garcon. Colt McCoy, who just doesn't have a very good deep ball, was able to average almost 10 yards per pass throwing to those guys. And obviously, Romo's injury played a significant role. Weeden was shockingly effective in relief (when he played for Cleveland, no quarterback save Blaine Gabbert was more unwatchable), but it definitely upset the Cowboys' rhythm on offense a bit.

10-5 last week; here I go again:

Panthers over Saints: Tough game to call; just betting on Newton and on Saints' road woes continuing.

Browns over Buccaneers: The loss of Alex Mack seems to have affected the Browns pretty seriously, but playing against the Bucs should be the perfect antidote.

Cowboys over Cardinals: Despite the shock loss, I'm going with Dallas. I think their offensive line can make things rough for Todd Bowles' aggressive schemes on defense.

Eagles over Texans: Just think the Texans are a 'good bad' team: They do well against poor teams, which the Eagles, for all their flaws, aren't.

Chiefs over Jets: Don't think Michael Vick is the elixer for the Jets' offensive woes.

Bengals over Jaguars: Bortles has been turnover prone, and this Bengals team seems to be getting back on track.

Chargers over Dolphins: Coming off a bye, I think the Chargers can score enough against a very good Dolphins defense to win.

Redskins over Vikings: It looks like RGIII is coming back, and playing against the Vikings will be a good way for him to ease his way back into the starting role.

49ers over Rams: The Rams just lost Jake Long for the season, and the 49ers are just a better all-around team anyways.

Broncos over Patriots: Extremely tough game to call, but I'll go with the Broncos. On a per-attempt basis, Manning is playing better than last year.

Seahawks over Raiders: It's the Raiders; they may go 0-16.

Steelers over Ravens: I've really got no idea on this one; both of these teams are extremely high variance (the Steelers annihilated the Colts and also lost at home to the Bucs).

Colts over Giants: I dunno; the Giants just seem mediocre to me this year.

The Eagles and most of the league wanted no part of that contract I think. And rumour's of off field issues.

Saints over Panthers: NO offense producing better than record would suggest, I think they'll get it together. nvm CAR.
Browns over Bucs: Browns are pretty mediocre still, but at least they are trending up; TB is a mess on D.
Cowboys over Cardinals: very evenly-matched teams, I think Dallas has more weapons. nvm ARI, Romo a no-go.
Eagles over Texans: with sub-par QB play, HOU is no real threat unless the Eagles really lay an egg.
Chiefs over Jets: new QBs usually gives their team an edge for wildcard factor alone, but Vick is done IMO.
Bengals over Jags: Bengals D not a good matchup for rookie QB struggling to protect the football.
Chargers over Dolphins: two good defenses, but SD has the clear QB lean.
Vikes over 'Skins: favorable match-up for RG3 on paper, but I have a bad feeling in my gut...
49ers over Rams: injuries are killing the Rams right now, might just be too depleted to put up a fight.
Broncos over Patriots: it's still regular season (heh).
Seahawks over Raiders: Oakland win would be a longshot anyway, but @CenturyLink? Just no way.
Steelers over Ravens: Look for Flacco to rebound from last week's poor game ... with a mediocre one.
Colts over Giants: NYG is tough to predict, and off a bye? Dunno, but I don't trust them, and Luck is (usually) $.

*edit* went 10-5 last week. *edit* changing NO pick to CAR at 10/30 7:14:35. *edit* changing DAL pick to ARI at 11/2 11:00:00.

Here goes week 9:

Carolina Panthers over New Orleans Saints
Cleveland Browns over Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Arizona Cardinals over Dallas Cowboys
Philadelphia Eagles over Houston Texans
Kansas City Chiefs over New York Jets
Cincinnati Bengals over Jacksonville Jaguars
San Diego Chargers over Miami Dolphins
Washington Redskins over Minnesota Vikings
San Francisco 49ers over St. Louis Rams
Denver Broncos over New England Patriots
Seattle Seahawks over Oakland Raiders
Baltimore Ravens over Pittsburgh Steelers
Indianapolis Colts over New York Giants

There are a lot of teams going on bye week, but that's not making the choices any easier. I reserve the right to change some of my picks until midnight tonight. After 11:59pm tonight (Wednesday 10/29) my picks will remain untouched, for better or worse.
I did only 9-6 last week despite much research, mantra chanting and general navel staring. I still have not fully recovered my powers of speech after some of last week's surprises. So I will add some commentary about my list later.
Last week, I added a wish for some hair raising upsets. :D I'm not any wiser this week. I hope we have some more hair raising upsets. :D

Where's Carolina's offense? Hopefully the extra few days will help them get their act together. They play against Philly on Nov 10th. Monday Night football.

Sad to say, but I think Carolina is in for a long season. Heading into the offseason, they were in absolute salary cap hell, and had to let go of a lot of their best players. Combine that with Greg Hardy's domestic violence conviction, and you have a recipe for disaster. I think Cam Newton is a terrific QB, but he did miss a few throws against NO, and with the Panthers' exceedingly thin receiving corps, they're just not going to have the opportunities to make up the difference if he's having an off day.

Also, can I change my pick for the Arizona/Dallas game to Arizona if Brandon Weeden starts? Maybe the change in scenery will be enough to make him somewhat competent, but the signs during his days at Cleveland were not at all encouraging.

Good morning all, it's about 10am here in Alaska. I'm watching the Cowboys/Cardinals game. It's the 2nd quarter and Arizona is leading 14 to 10. Tony Romo is not active due to his back. It's too early say much.

The Broncos/Patriots game should be really fun to watch due to outsized Manning/Brady rivalry. :D

Miami is leading San Diego 20 to 0 in the 2nd quarter.

The Eagles and Texans are tied 14 to 14, and I am eating an enormous breakfast burrito. :P

Later...

Surprised Vikings beat Redskins

Dallas loses to Arizona. Is this the beginning of the end for Dallas? Or will they prevail and get into the playoffs? They've lost 2 games in a row

Miami shuts out Chargers 37-0. Very surprised by the score

Sunday 11/2, Final scores so far:

Arizona Cardinal beat Dallas Cowboys, 28 to 17
Not surprised, especially with Tony Romo out. Seattle will be playing Arizona, weeks 12 and 16. I shudder at the thought. These guys are good.

Cleveland Browns beat Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 22 to 17

Philadelphia Eagles beat Houston Texans, 31 to 21___not unexpected.

Kansas City Chiefs beat New York Jets, 24 to 10___quarterback Michael Vick has suffered a possible concussion.

Cincinnati Bengals beat Jacksonville Jaguars, 33 to 23

Miami Dolphins beat San Diego Chargers, 37 to 0___what has happened to the Chargers lately? Are we seeing a real turn around for Miami?

Minnesota Vikings beat Washington Redskins, 29 to 26___surprise, surprise...

Continued for Sunday 11/2:

New England Patriots beat Denver Broncos, 43 to 21___What a game! 2 weeks ago, the Patriots looked fragile even though they won over the Jets. They beat the Bears last week with a healthy point spread, but I didn't think much of it because after all, they were playing the Bears. All of the teams they have beaten so far before this weekend were poor to middling opponents. This game though, is a serious win over the strongest opponent available. But you know the saying about "any given Sunday". So unless I see a lot more solid wins from the Pats, I still have to think of Denver as the best team so far this season. I hope my jokes about the rivalry didn't offend anyone...

Seattle Seahawks beat Oakland Raiders, 30 to 24___Not much glory in beating a team that has not had one win this season. I'm worried because the rest of the Seahawks schedule contains a lot of very tough opponents, 2 games with the Cardinals, 1 with Kansas City and 1 with the Eagles. Seattle really needs to pull it together SOON or thing are going to get ugly for them. Come on, Seahawks!

St. Louis Rams beat San Francisco 49ers, 13 to 10___This was unexpected. But then the Rams have been a wild card lately... :P
