This has got to be the best one-handed catch ever:

http://bleacherrepor...ng-dragged-down

AWESOME. That might be the best catch I've seen in the NFL.

Now back to fighting demons and dragons in DAI. Good game

Final scores for week 12, Monday 11/24

Buffalo Bills beat New York Jets, 38 to 3 The Jet's quarterback issues were really a problem in this game.

http://www.nfl.com/n...-wallop-ny-jets

Baltimore Ravens beat New Orleans Saints, 34 to 27 This is the 3rd home game loss in a row for the Saints. The Ravens however, are back on a winning track.

Other news: Odell Beckham JR's incredible catch is taking on a viral internet meme life of its own:

(Too bad the Giants lost this game.)

Excellent. Ravens beat the Saints. With both Atlanta and the Saints losing, Carolina still has an opportunity, though small, to win its division if they can win the rest of their remaining games and for the Falcons and Saints to lose more games

10-3 last week; my best in a while. Let's see if we can maintain that success.

Lions over Bears: I think the Lions' loss to the Pats is more a testament to how good the Pats are than the limitations of the Lions. This is a game they must win if they are to avoid the meltdowns of the past.
Cowboys over Eagles: The Cowboys' offensive line should carry the day over the Eagles' sketchy defense. And I just can't pick Sanchez on the road against what looks like one of the best teams in the NFL.
Seahawks over 49ers: I have no idea; this game will be low-scoring and will come down to a small number of random plays, so I'll just go with the defending champs coming off an impressive win.
Browns over Bills: This is the hardest game of the week for me to pick; and has some draft implications as well (Cleveland has Buffalo's first round selection for next year, so the worse Buffalo does, the higher that pick will be).
Colts over Washington: Indianapolis has a 'good-bad' defense: It's very good against poor teams, and is not good at all against the better offenses.
Rams over Raiders: One win isn't enough for me to give the benefit of the doubt to Oakland; Derek Carr got lucky with some very poor throws last week against KC.
Panthers over Vikings: Both teams are mediocre; I'll go with the team that has Cam Newton coming off a bye week.
Steelers over Saints: Drew Brees' accuracy seems to have precipitously declined; his passes are more wobbly, and throws that used to be automatic are off-target. Plus, Le'Veon Bell will run all over the Saints' porous run defense.
Bengals over Buccaneers: It's the Buccaneers.
Giants over Jaguars: It's the Jaguars.
Ravens over Chargers: The Chargers haven't looked right the last few weeks, while the Ravens' offense is clicking.
Texans over Titans: I have no idea what the quarterback situation in Houston is, but whoever they put out there will be good enough against what I think is one of the two or three worst teams in the league.
Cardinals over Falcons: The Falcons' offense is one-dimensional, and their defense is zero-dimensional. Even with Drew Stanton, somewhere in the range of 13 points will probably be enough for AZ to win.
Patriots over Packers: Boy was I wrong about this Pats team earlier this year. What is their weakness right now?
Broncos over Chiefs: Still have to give the edge to Manning in this match up; they came through with a tough victory against an underrated Dolphins team.
Dolphins over Jets: It's the Jets.

I forgot to post a choice last week for the Colts/Jaguars game, So I can only claim 13-2 on my week 12 picks. I'm counting the forgotten game as a loss. Still, 13-2 is the best I've done yet this season.
I may shoot that all to pieces though, as some of my picks this week are distinctly not favored to win.  :P  Bear with me.

Here goes week 13:

Detroit  Lions(7-4) over Chicago Bears(5-6) not much to say here...

Philadelphia Eagles(8-3) over Dallas Cowboys(8-3)  It's true Tony Romo was playing well last week and didn't appear to be favoring his back. But the Cowboys only just beat the Giants on 11/26 and the score was a close 31 to 28 win. The Cowboys, playing at home against a troubled team, should have had a stronger win if all was truly well. So even with Sanchez, the Eagles are a much tougher team than last week's Giants and I'm going to go with them to beat Dallas.

Seattle Seahawks(7-4) over San Francisco 49ers(7-4)  I'm going with my Seahawks no matter what they do.  :D
That said, I find their injury roster disturbing (again) and this will be short week for recovery.
http://profootballta...-night/related/
Rock steady, Seahawks. You can do this.

Indianapolis Colts(7-4) over Washington Redskins(3-8) I won't forget the Colts this week.

Houston Texans(5-6) over Tennessee Titans(2-9)  Looks pretty straight forward...

Cleveland Browns(7-4) over Buffalo Bills(6-5)  I'm going against what most critics have picked here. That said, Brian Hoyer will have to up his game a notch over the one he played last week against the Falcons. Buffalo's overall game has improved since they started Kyle Orton as quarterback and they will be playing at home. But I still see Cleveland as the team with more potential. I think way too much was made over the Bill's win over the Jets last week. This was a hard pick and I'm not completely sure why I made it.

Baltimore Ravens(7-4) over San Diego Chargers(7-4) The Ravens are playing at home and appear stronger right now anyway.

New York Giants(3-8) over Jacksonville Jaguars(1-10) I want to watch this game for the sole reason that Odell Beckham might do again this week what he did last week.  :D

Cincinnati Bengals(7-3-1) over Tampa Bay Buccaneers(2-9) The Bengals will roar here. Tampa Bay's upsets are too few and far between.

St. Louis Rams(4-7) over Oakland Raiders(1-10)  I still smile when I think of what Oakland did to Kansas City last week. It's not enough to make them a sound pick though, especially on the road. But I would love to be surprised again...

Pittsburgh Steelers(7-4) over New Orleans Saints(4-7) On top of being an all around better team; the Steelers are playing this at home and coming off a bye week.

Minnesota Vikings(4-7) over Carolina Panthers(3-7-1) But, I think this has plenty of upset potential. The Vikings will have home advantage, but the Panthers are coming off a bye week. These are 2 weak teams, but the fact that the Packers only just beat the Vikings last week, make me think of Minnesota as the slightly stronger of the 2. (The score last week was Packers 24, Vikings 21. Strangely close scores, considering they were playing the Packers...)

Arizona Cardinals(9-2) over Atlanta Falcons(4-7) The Cardinals will be serving roast Falcon with all the trimmings...  :P

New England Patriots(9-2) over Green Bay Packers(8-3)  The critics don't favor the Patriots this week. These 2 teams are both becoming pretty tough and the Packers will have home advantage. But as I mentioned earlier, Green Bay only just beat Minnesota last week; whereas New England  really clobbered Detroit during week 12, 34 to 9. I'm going with the Patriots.
Here's Bill Belichick's  take:
http://www.nfl.com/n...both-wear-no-12

Denver Broncos(8-3) over Kansas City Chiefs(7-4) I'm sure last week's loss to Oakland is something the Chiefs want desperately to put far behind them and they will be playing at home. But the Broncos, with their win against Miami last week and their overall record look like a stronger pick.

Miami Dolphins(6-5) over New York Jets(2-9) The Jets and their problems are just too deep for words here.
http://bleacherrepor...n-idzik-must-go

I'm going to return and edit this thread to add comments and check grammar. If I change my picks it will be well before game time. But I don't see that happening. My train of thought is pretty well set this week, for better or worse.

I hope you all have a happy Thanksgiving.  :)

Happy Thanksgiving everyone

Last week went 11-4

Thursday

Detroit over Chicago - Detroit should win this after their poor performance at New England.

Dallas over Philly - The winner of this game would most likely win the division and possibly get a first round bye in the playoffs

upset pick - 49er's over Seahawks - The winner would  likely get in the playoffs while the other might not make it

Sunday

Colts over Redskins

Houston over Titans - I'm surprised Houston doesn't have a better record than what they have. Unless they fall apart, they should win this gam

Chargers over Ravens - Rivers will have to play his best for the team to win and overcome the cold temperatures.

Bills over Browns

Giants over Jacksonville - I would not be surprised if Jacksonville finds a way to win this game, but I still like the Giants chances

Bengals over TB

Raiders over Rams - Oakland is still on a high after getting their first win last week and will use that to beat the Rams

Steelers over Saints - If this was being played in the dome I might vote for Siants, but Steelers have the advantage at home and in cold weather

Panthers over Vikings - Must win for Carolina. That can be said for the rest of their games

Arizona over Atlanta

Packers over Pats - This at Lambeau field and I don't like the Patriots.

Denver over KC

Monday night

Miami over Jets

I don't know whose idea it was to nickname Aaron Rodgers "The King in the North". If they were looking for a lucky nickname, this isn't it... You shouldn't nickname a player you like after someone George R.R. Martin killed in such an unspeakable manner. Nice picture, though.

0-1 last week, WHOOOO!!

Alright, here it is...

Indy over Washington: DEADskins, 'nuff said.

Bills over Browns: Bills can shut down the Browns' running game, and Hoyer cannot carry an offense to a W.

Houston over Tennessee: Texans' D vs. the rookie QB and solid running-game ought to be enough to win.

Ravens over Chargers: feels like the wheels are coming off for San Diego.

Rams over Raiders: though Oakland looks to be rejuvenated after win, Rams have been a headache for many opponents, and are at home.

Bengals over Tampa Bay: for any team vying for #1 in their division, the Bucs are basically a gimme.

Jags over Giants: Jacksonville is not good, but they are disciplined, enough -- I think -- to create the turnovers necessary to beat NYG.

Stillers over 'Aints: while PIT is inconsistent and underachieves against weak opponents, NO on the road is a worse bet still.

Panthers over Vikings: Teddy is turning it over too much, and I think Olsen could be the bane of MIN's defense tomorrow.

Arizona over Atlanta: 6-10 NFC South champ ... all going to plan! >xD

Denver over KC: I suspect DEN will reclaim the top of the division from here on in.

Packers over Pats: someone has to bring NE back to Earth, might as well be us. Aside: winning QB = MVP, you can take that to the bank.

Miami over Jets: the 'fins have held off better offenses than one led by Ge-nope SmINT.

6-7 this week; the worst yet. I picked wrong on every game that was close on paper (Panthers/Vikings, Chargers/Ravens, Bills/Browns Packers/Patriots), and the upsets (Jags over Giants, Saints over Steelers, Falcons over Cardinals) didn't help either. Yuck. The Falcons' win was especially perplexing; sure, Drew Stanton has a really slow release and sailed a few passes badly in this game, but that doesn't explain how the Atlanta Falcons, one of the worst rushing teams in the league, became the first team to have a 100-yard rusher against the Cardinals. Sometimes I wonder if anyone knows anything about this league.

I have to say that posting about this on a week-to-week basis has made me much more sympathetic to sports writers. If we're strictly being rational, then we'd have to say after every single game, "Well, that's still not enough information to tell who's good and who isn't" (even 16 games probably isn't enough information), but you can't just say that all the time, because it's boring. Thus, the temptation to overreact to the events of the previous week becomes almost irresistable. Mike Greenberg of "Mike and Mike in the Morning" once said that his occupation is "professional overreacter," and it seems that he's exactly right.

Sports writers and commentators are too willfully ignorant to get any sympathy from me. Not that there is anything wrong with that because at the end of the day it is just sports. From hanging around analytics types I've learned its best to use the past tense that way you're in the clear. Just don't be trying to predict the future without some viable data. And yeah, 16 games probably isn't a big enough sample but it could be worse (at least its not the MLB playoffs) but if you are willing to take information with a grain of salt its not that hard to talk about things without overracting.

If the Raiders didn't eat all that turkey, they might've put some points on the board

Carolina I'm frustrated with. The offense needs to be benched and their special teams unit.

Surprised that the Steelers couldn't do better against the Saints

One of my reasons for following this season so closely was and still is to try and understand NFL football at more than a superficial level. I have learned a lot; but like you, I really feel mystified sometimes. You do write like you have a better understanding of the game's mechanics though, so don't feel too bad.
I went 10-6 this week, which isn't all that great; but of those choices I got right, here's part of what I based them on:

Always look at the injury roster.

Look for trends over a team's last few games and the strength or weakness reflected in the way a team has won or lost a game.

Did a team just come off a bye week? Or did they have a short 4 day break?

Home "advantage" doesn't always mean as much to all teams. Some teams are undefeated at home. Other teams are not as affected by being on the road. You can quickly check home wins VS road wins looking under Standings, on the NFL site:
http://www.nfl.com/standings
In fact, if you check under "home" and "road" wins, you'll notice that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' only 2 wins were both on the road... Weird.

Team morale is also something to consider.

I always try and read a lot of different opinions, if I have time. And like you said, there are a lot of overreactions and exaggerating. Many grains of salt are sometimes necessary...

Sometimes, if spite of everything, I will make a choice just because of a gut feeling. Choosing Cleveland over Buffalo was an example of my doing this and that didn't work out so well.

I did buy the book, "Football for Dummies". Probably not something you'll need to do.  :P

Something else to consider when you see an upset... Some of the underdogs are actively working to fix what's wrong with their game. Those efforts should bear some fruit, even if it's only an occasional win.

Have fun and enjoy the holiday season.  :)
