The preseason games are an indicator that give some information about a team's readiness at the beginning of the season. But they are only one piece of the picture. And as Osbornep pointed out, they can sometimes mislead. This article I'm posting by CNN sports writer Russell Baxter takes that into consideration. He does give each NFL team a report card style grade and it's worth a look.
 
It's funny how we can spend so much time deliberating over a game that can so easily trash expectations.

Yeah, far too early. 

The Giants may have beaten the Patriots, but only one Patriots starter played; Brandon Browner. 

Most didn't even dress. 

Only week three of the preseason matters.

It may take a lot of work and planning, but down the road a few years? Who knows?

The Seahawks only won their first superbowl just last year. It wasn't luck.

True enough. I think the main things are that with just 16 games, the sample size for your average NFL season is just too small to make reliable predictions. Plus, in the post salary-cap era, it's much more difficult for one team to stockpile all of the league's best talent. The difference between a 9-win team and a 13-win team isn't as big as it would have been 15 or 20 years ago. Because teams are more evenly matched, your record can turn on a relatively small number of random plays, which I think is partly how 9-7 or 10-6 teams can win the Super Bowl (a very rare occurrence before the cap), or how teams can go from worst to first in the division within a year, etc.

 

One of my favorite NFL writers is Grantland's Bill Barnwell; he does a really good job taking into consideration a lot of statistical information that most analysts ignore: fumble recovery rates, performance in one possession games, etc. (These things are generally random from year to year, so you can often predict that a team that had especially bad marks in both of these categories will experience an uptick in their performance just by returning to the league average rate). He also does a good job avoiding some of the usual sports writer cliches you see in a lot of writing about the NFL.

 

Chris B. Brown of smartfootball.com is also very good, although he gets much more into the X's and O's of the game, so it's much trickier reading for the lay fan (I'll be honest; I don't even understand a lot of it).

Okay, I'm currently sitting in a very loud (due to Seahawks fans) sports bar in Anchorage, AK. There is roughly 10 minutes left to the 3rd quarter and the score is Packers 10, Seahawks 20. On top of all the robust energy in this crowd, a guy just pitched over behind me and the bartender had to call the EMTs. They had him hooked to a portable EKG before they took him out to the ambulance, so I hope he's going to be alright. If it gets any louder in here, the EMTs may have to come back and look at my burst eardrums. Much screaming and high spirits here. I'll talk more later. GO SEAHAWKS!

I don't follow baseball a whole lot, but there's no question that analytics has a foothold on baseball in a way that it may never have in the NFL; you've got a much larger sample size of games, and individual performance is much less dependent upon how the team around that individual performs.

 

The other sport I follow somewhat regularly is actually tennis, of all things; I was flipping back and forth between the Seahawks/Packers game and the Federer/Monfils quarterfinal at the US Open; hey, at least that match was competitive, right?

Yes, the Seahawks won.

The Packers showed some unfortunate flaws in pass protection and run defense that they hopefully will better address in their season game 2 with the New York Jets. The Seahawk's next game is with the San Diego Chargers.

I will update this thread again on Sun. 9/6 and Mon. 9/7 when the rest of the season's first games are played. I will leave more in depth analysis to osbornep, who seems to have a really good grasp of football game mechanics.

Well my Raiders have no chance as usual, and my Cardinals are in the toughest division so it'll be another frustrating year for me. I don't mind the Seahawks since they are geographically my home team, so a repeat wouldn't make me too sad.

After serveral days of deliberation, I believe your wish will come true. I think the Bears are going to come out of the NFC to play the Patriots in the Super Bowl. The additions of Lamarr Houston (Hook 'em) and Jared Allen are huge. I like Chicago's secondary. Cutler is set to have a huge year (and he's also my favorite QB in the NFL), Forte is always rock solid and if any receiving corps can stand up to the Legion of Boom, it's those new Monsters of the Midway in Brandon Marshall, Alshon Jeffery and Martellus Bennett. If Santonio Holmes is right, he could be a major addition.

 

I still see the Seahawks and the Saints as having an edge over the Bears in the NFC. The Seahawks' defense will at least be close to what it was last year, and if Harvin stays healthy for most of the season, the offense should be significantly better. Drafting Brandin Cooks should make the Saints' offense even more explosive (Brees is my favorite NFL QB; always been a fan of the little guys), while the addition of Jairus Byrd at safety should improve the defense.

 

Cutler has tremendous physical tools, but I'm not sure his production has ever been commensurate with his talents. He's never managed a TD:INT ratio of 2:1 or better in any season, and has never gotten a QB rating of 90.0 or better for any season in which he's played. He could always go on a Joe Flacco-like run from 2012, and he has the talent around him to do it for sure, but it still isn't the kind of thing I would bet a lot of money on given his track record.

Wish I could say I was still a fan of the sport; have not watched a game in years. That said, you dance with the one you brought, and the Steelers are my home area team, and the Titans are for my brother's home of Nashville.

Wish I could say I was still a fan of the sport; have not watched a game in years. That said, you dance with the one you brought, and the Steelers are my home area team, and the Titans are for my brother's home of Nashville.

 

I've gone from being obsessed to if I am off I will catch my team play and partly its still a fun social thing. Like today I am off and am just about to go down to a friends to watch the game.

 

I have lived in central Maryland for so long and its this weird melting pot of Ravens, Steelers, and Redskins fans so I just can never let a Steelers fan pass by. Some take it to seriously but my experience was always like going into the corner store on game day in my purple. There is a Steelers fan. Eye's meet, quips are exchanged, and laughs are had by all.

Gotcha; am from Morgantown, WV, and there used to be Black & Gold for sale everywhere, but not a Pitt college jersey to be found anywhere.

Am forced to dislike the Browns, Eagles and Ravens on principle; perhaps others.

I am currently watching the Denver Broncos play the Indianapolis Colts. The crowd is quieter as most of the fans in this area  tend to be most emotionally invested in the Seahawks. It is toward the end of the first quarter and finally someone has scored. It's Broncos 3, Colts 0. I wonder if it will stay a close game.... more later.
