Here's an article that mentions, "Amonton's Law of Pressure-Temperature". It states that if the mass and volume of a gas are constant (like the air inside a football), the gas' pressure is directly related to a gas' temperature.

So, I'm glad someone else thought of this too...
It was about 2 hrs. before game time when they were last checked. Did someone throw them in the freezer with the ice cream? Maybe not, that could have made the leather stiff... Or were they deflated in a more conventional way?

I find it interesting that the NFL hired a legal/investigative firm to investigate this "scandal", when none of them are scientists. 

 

Meanwhile, everyone else wants to "protect the integrity" of football, and that's really confusing me. Do people actually think that no one in sports breaks the rules intentionally? How deluded is the public? It's a competition, people are going to "cheat", it's even secretly encouraged. /continue rant about the subject.

Some more news on the whole ball deflation scandal (no, I will not use the term "deflategate," for reasons best explained here).

 

I hope to see some scandal/controversy surrounding the entrance to a stadium or some other major public facility so that we will get "Gategate."

I agree with the theory that the footballs deflated due to weather.

 

I read one article that suggested that if the balls were inflated with warm/hot air from a compressor and then taken outside, they would deflate in about 30 minutes to the 1.6-2.0 PSI range the balls were found to be underinflated at near halftime. And if it happened this way, I wouldn't expect an equipment manager to realize not to use warm air/use a compressor when temps. are cooler outside. I mean, maybe they are supposed to know that, I have no clue if they are, but this doesn't seem like something anyone has really thought about before now, so I give the Patriots the benefit of the doubt there.

 

Bill Belichick said he doesn't know anything, and I believe him, and Tom Brady said he didn't notice a difference, and I believe that because he went, I think it was, 9-9 after halftime with properly inflated balls. Joe Theismann tested differently inflated balls to see if he could tell a difference between 2 PSI and he couldn't. http://www.sportingn...fc-championship.

 

And the advantage to an underinflated ball seems minuscule, and in some respects its not an advantage at all if this video is accurate:

I hope that the Pats use this as motivation to beat the Seahawks in the Superbowl, especially Brady after being called a liar and a cheat by so many people when there is yet no real evidence to claim foul play. Drew Bledsoe said its just irresponsible and I agree.

Pretty much, like many have suspected, the deflation was due to the weather. That's what he believes and it makes sense to me.

It makes sense to me too. Although I do wonder if the exposure was really long enough to account for 2lbs. PSI. Another thing I'm not clear on is the condition of the twelve balls the Colts were required to contribute. Anyone read anything about that? Because if the Colts' balls were more normal... Why?

I really want this to be over with so we can focus on the Super Bowl. Go Seahawks!

The exposure in the experiments the Patriots did, or the exposure for the balls on gameday? I don't know what controls and variables were used in their experiments to really say, but Belichick said they ran gameday simulations. IMO, either the balls on gameday weren't missing exactly 2 PSI (which is possible, I think they've only been said to be around that range, not necessarily exactly 2 PSI) or other factors Belichick isn't aware of in addition to the rubbing process led to the missing 2 PSI. 

 

Belichick believed it was about the rubbing process the Pats use, noting that it artificially raised the internal temp and PSI in tests, he focused on that, and I think that's legitimate in combination with temp differences in the lockeroom and on the field that he also mentioned. Their balls in the experiment came out to consistently to about 11.0 PSI after "equilibriumizing" to field conditions; some variance between each ball depending on individual characteristics and gauges used should also be considered because it too would change PSI and he mentioned that.

 

I don't think Bill Belichick has reason to lie about any of this, to do impromptu conferences with the media about football physics, to be so defensive. I don't think he'd go out of his way to lie, and I don't think there was any intentional cheating involved. I don't think the Patriots should be punished for this. I don't think the league will find any intentional wrong doing here and if they have to punish them under the line "ignorance is not an excuse" (Roger Goodell has said this in other cases so some may hold his feet to the fire about consistency), it should be a tiny, slap on the wrist fine and then everyone should move on. Superbowl suspensions, suspensions for next season, taking away draft picks, firings, huge fines against the cap, that would all be ridiculous for something as inconsequential, as improbable to be aware of, as 2 PSI fluctuation in footballs, and in a 45-7 blowout victory at that, its really silly.

 

And I haven't seen anything about the Colts balls though I haven't really been looking. Their process for inflating and prepping their footballs could be very different from the Pats and both teams could handle their balls within the rules and yet come out with different results in PSI from what I understand. Also, we don't know what the refs that inspected the balls did to them, if they made any changes to the PSI or how after the Patriots and Colts turned them over.

I get tired of seeing this guy get picked on over so much really petty stuff. I agree obscene gestures should be against the rules, these guys are looked on as role models and their conduct reflects on their team. But he's been fined for things like not talking enough to the press and having gold plate on the bottom of his track shoes. Things that really mean squat when you think about what he has done for the Seahawks this season. He's not into drugs and he doesn't beat up on women (I hope not, anyway.), they need to let up on the fines.

I think Seattle wins they ( Wilson and the offense ) can`t play that badly again . The key to winning might be who runs the ball better and injury recovery for the Seahawk`s  DB`s , we all know that Brady will throw the ball a lot .

In that particular clip, the clip provided with that article, I didn't see him grabbing himself. I have seen him doing that in another a picture from a different game, which was kind of crude... The reason I'm complaining is that the NFL fines him so much and so frequently. Sometimes, it's over not talking enough to the press or gold plate on the bottom of his track shoes, really petty stuff considering all he's done this season for the Seahawks. This man doesn't do drugs or beat people up, he's just lacking a few social skills.
Grabbing your crotch on the field while doing a victory leap is rude though, and he needs to stop doing it. I'm wondering how someone would feel if their child started to grab their crotch at school during sports, and then say that they're doing it because Marshawn Lynch does it...
The next thing you know, there'll be "crotch-gate".

My pick for the Super Bowl

 

New England wins  New England will win 45-13

 

I hate New England, but after the performance of the Seahawks against Green Bay, except the last 5 minutes, thanks for that Green Bay, the Patriots should win fairly easily.

 

I know in the 4th quarter Sherman's left arm was in pain and was surprised that Green Bay didn't throw in his area, but unless he's back to what he was before his injury, he won't be a factor. Even if he is, the Patriots will just do what Green Bay did until their meltdown.

 

I will watch the game though I won't really pay attention too much except when the commercials come on. Looking forward to see what new ones will be shown.

I think that both kinds of football are gross as all hell, but some of the American sportswriters can be hysterically funny. SBNation had a pretty good day today; apart from somehow getting Ryan Nanni on Today with Hoda, they put up a wonderful PFT Commenter article here where he brings his scorching hot takes on the road to Media Day.

If you've never heard of PFT Commenter or don't understand his shtick...well, it's kind of hard to explain. Even some of the best attempts have been a little...off. Regardless, it's one of the best parody jobs I've ever seen anywhere.

I think that he could have been a little more tactful, but you have to look at some the silly things reporters do and say at media events like this. I was listening to CBS sport radio last night and I heard that one reporter was going around asking questions with 2 sock puppets, another was dressed in a Superman costume (and the NFL griped because Marshawn Lynch wore the wrong hat to this event). http://bleacherrepor...at-at-media-day
Some reporters even asked questions about private, sexual preferences. Would most of us be disgusted at being approached by a mob of idiots with microphones who often twist and exaggerate what ever is said to them? I think so. As for Richard Sherman's response, It's silly to take a player's outburst about being the best corner at an emotional moment and taunt him with it later. I do think he could have handled the question with more patience, though. Not all reporters are unprofessional jerks, just a significant number of them.

On a lighter note, you really have to appreciate what a sweetie Rob Gronkowski can be. He seems to thrive on all the media fuss.

Speaking as a foreigner to American football, I don't understand the whole issue around the deflated footballs. Is a national sport being handled in a sloppy manner?
