Patriots/Vikings: This game didn't quite go how many would've thought it would last Thursday. The Patriots run defense had just been gashed by Knowshon Moreno and Lamar Miller down in Miami, with the two combining for 193 yards. It was now going up against Adrian Peterson, who many would argue is the best running back in the NFL. The Patriots' offensive line was questionable at best going into the game, without veteran leadership from the traded Logan Mankins, and coming off an absolute drubbing by the Dolphins' defensive line, which produced double-digit pressures and four sacks on Tom Brady the week before. The Vikings were boasting a terrifying offensive menace in the form of Cordarrelle Patterson, one of the most explosive players in the NFL, and Minnesota had beaten a defensively sound team in St. Louis 34-6 the weak before.
On Friday, news came out about Adrian Peterson being indicted on child abuse charges, and the Minnesota front office responded very quickly be deactivating the star running back for the game. This dealt a large blow to the Vikings, a team whose offense has often revolved around a theory of "Hand the ball of to Peterson and get out of his way." Upcoming and highly talented Patriots linebacker Jamie Collins was out for the game, dealing with a thigh injury suffered in practice. His absence was felt severely on the games opening drive, with his replacement being abused by Matt Cassel, who went 4 for 4 on the drive for 75 yards and a touchdown.
But other than their opening drive, the day was not the day of the Vikings. After a three-and-out of the Patriots, Cassel threw a pass that had questionable quality, and was intercepted and returned to the Vikings' one yard line by Safety Devin McCourty; the beginning of what would be a very long day for the Vikings veteran quaterback. He threw four interceptions: the aforementioned interception, a interception to Darrelle Revis that seemed to be intended for the defensive back, another similar interception on a pass intended for Patterson, and a tipped pass dove for by a Patriots defensive tackle. The Vikings didn't have much success on the ground, as Asiata, Peterson's replacement, rushed for 36 yards on 13 carries, a 2.8 YPC average. However, he was effective in the passing game, catching 5 passes for 48 yards and his teams only touchdown. It was a plain bad day for the Vikings offense, without mentioning the blocked kick that was returned for a touchdown. While Peterson's absence certainly played a role, his presence would not have been enough to make up for four interceptions and a rate of 3.8 yards per passing attempt.
On the Patriots offense, it was a bit strange. Brady played well, going 15-22 for 149 yards and a touchdown. The numbers aren't eye-popping, but his throws were on target and he converted a good deal of third down plays. The team just didn't elect to pass the ball very much, even running the ball in nearly every 2nd/3rd and long situation. It isn't far-fetched to assume that killing the clock played a large role in this; a 23 point lead combined with a stout defense should typically stipulate a gameplan consisting of running, running down the play clock, and not doing anything stupid. The really strange part was the Patriots 15 penality calls, going for a totoal of 163 yards. That is a lot of flags for two week span on a team coached by a rookie HC, not for a Belichick-coached team. It's likely an aberation, and is unlikely to happen again.
On other notes, Revis certainly seemed to have returned to his island. He shadowed Greg Jennings the whole game, and held to 4 yards on 1 catch. Compare this to Jennings performance last week of 6 catches for 58 yards and a touchdown, and the difference is palpable. Revis had been questioned for his performance in the previous week, allowing 2 catches on 5 targets and was beat for the game tying touchdown by Mike Wallace.
Maybe I'll do a write up for the Broncos/Chiefs game.

Sunday 9/14 final game score:
Chicago Bears beat San Francisco 49ers, 28 to 20
The final 2nd game of this season will be the Philadelphia Eagles vs. the Indianapolis Colts today 9/15 at 8:30 ET.
The surprises we've seen during this round of games remind us once again that no one team, no matter how good, can just coast through the season to the super bowl. This whole season is going to be wonderful to watch because everyone is trying so hard.
As a Seahawk Fan, Sunday's game was pain to watch, but I salute the Chargers for a very good game. San Diego's Antonio Gates and Philip Rivers are two players to watch in the future. The Seahawks need to work on their offensive game. The right side of their offensive line is vulnerable. That, and they are still mortal. Even Richard Sherman is mortal. (really) ![]()

I'll go ahead and make a fool of myself by posting picks before the Thursday night game:
Atlanta d. Tampa Bay: I think Atlanta's struggles in Cincinatti were more about Cincinatti being really talented, and I don't think Tampa Bay is a good team at all, especially with Gerald McCoy at 50/50 odds to play this Sunday.
Cincinatti d. Tenessee: Cincinatti's better; I don't think there's much more to be said after Tennessee's ugly display against the Cowboys.
Baltimore d. Cleveland: I think Cleveland is going to be a tough out for anyone who plays them, but I still think Baltimore has the edge in terms of personnel.
San Diego d. Buffalo: Even after San Diego's win against Seattle, I'm not super confident about this pick with the way Buffalo's D has looked. But if San Diego scores early and EJ Manuel has to lead a comeback effort, I think the Bills are in huge trouble.
Philadelphia d. Washington: Not really on the Kirk Cousins bandwagon; having a nice game against Jacksonville isn't enough to make me forget how awful he played toward the end of last season. And I think Philly just has a few too many weapons (Sproles, Maclin, McCoy, Ertz, etc.). Washington will need a poor effort from Foles to win this game.
Green Bay d. Detroit: Yeah, this is pretty much an Aaron Rodgers over Stat Padford pick (sorry, I couldn't help myself with that one). Detroit might be the more complete team overall, and Green Bay was hardly convincing over the Jets, but I'm still rolling with Rodgers here.
Indianapolis d. Jacksonville: Does anything really have to be said about this one?
New Orleans d. Minnesota: NO's first home game should be a win against a Vikings team in turmoil in the wake of the Peterson child abuse allegations.
New England d. Oakland: Pretty self-explanatory here.
Houston d. NY Giants: Houston's defense looks really good, and NY's new offense under Ben McAdoo hasn't clicked at all through two games.
Dallas d. St. Louis: Dallas might be one of the best running teams in the league, and facing undrafted and unheralded QB Austin Davis might be just what the doctor ordered for their maligned defense.
Arizona d. San Francisco: This was the hardest game for me to pick. Arizona's secondary is outstanding, and with Kaepernick's tendency to lock in on Michael Crabtree a bit, it could be another long night for him. The only question is how Arizona scores with Drew Stanton at the helm, but I do think they get it done.
Seattle d. Denver: Seattle's offense has been extremely sharp through two games, and as great as Manning is, I don't think he's going to be able to possess the ball for 40 minutes on the road against Seattle's D. I'm not expecting a 43-8 blowout, but I am expecting a fairly comfortable Seattle win.
Miami d. Kansas City: I'm not as sold on Miami as a lot of people are (Ryan Tannehill just kinda seems like 'default quarterback' to me), but I think they're better than KC.
Carolina d. Pittsburgh: Even without Greg Hardy, Carolina's defense is really scary, and Cam Newton is playing well enough that I don't think Pittsburgh can count on keeping this a low scoring game.
Chicago d. NY Jets: Minimal confidence in this pick as well, but I just can't shake my skepticism of the Jets offense.
Last thing: I'd be remiss if I said nothing at all about the wave of abuse allegations that have been hitting NFL players, whether it's Greg Hardy, Ray Rice, Adrian Peterson or now Jonathan Dwyer. Louisa Thomas wrote a wonderful piece which expresses anything I might have had to say and more, far more eloquently than I ever could, so I'll just link it here.

It might be. There was a Tampa fan in the stands wearing a brown paper bag over his head in reference to the Bucs always losing in the 80's

Some more sad NFL news; place kicker Rob Bironas, formerly of the Tennessee Titans, passed away in a car crash yesterday. "My Bironas" had a tremendously strong leg, and once made 8 field goals in a single game (against the Houston Texans in 2007; it's an NFL record that still stands). RIP

Their special teams gave up 11 points, otherwise the game may of been diffeent. Hopefully they have that problem fixed when facing Baltimore next Sunday

Thank you for posting the results this week as I was busy. I was also overwhelmed enough over the Seahawks vs. Broncos game that I really didn't feel like posting. When the game went into overtime, I almost lost my French fries.
As it turned out, SEAHAWKS 26 BRONCOS 20
Unlike the Denver sports writer quoted in this article, I do not feel they claim that win just because of the coin toss. The Seahawks led the Broncos through most of the game.
