this is the situation.

ive only just got ME2 (i know, im a late player) and have 'bought' the free cerberus network DLC.

Cerberus downloads did not appear for me to acquire until after i completed the main storyline and defeated the collectors.

my question is this. if i continue to play after defeating the collectors, having my new DLCs now active, will the mercenary (and also the thief from another DLC) still be able to be imported into ME3 as l'iara 'the shadow broker' has, or are they only able to be imported if they take part in the battle against the collectors?

I'm not even sure if you can recruit them after the main quest is over.

Even if you have completed the suicide mission, you can still recruit any squadmates that have not yet been recruited, and you can still complete any unfinished loyalty quests.

In addition to what Caesar said: Some dialogue on the dlc missions may change, and the merc's mission will allow an additional outcome.

Import into ME3 should work just fine in any case.

Whatever you do after the suicide mission will be imported into ME3.

It really is a well thought out game..  you can get and do ALL DLC after the SM.

I also enjoyed how ME2 changed (had variations) if you imported from ME1.

To clarify, you need to save the game manually after finishing everything (after the ending) and when importing the save from ME3 choose that save? I've actually never done that

You should be able to choose an autosave post-suicide mission.

The autosave is created after the suicide mission. After that I do, say, Arrival DLC. I save afterwards manually and import that manual save in ME3?

I'm pretty sure that ME3 automatically picks your last post-SM save, whether manual or auto-save. I always do overlord and arrival after the SM and my actions there are imported into ME3 (eg saving David Archer).

OK, I wanted to do Arrival after the SM but its ending is nowhere near as epic as SM :D Plus the dialogue barely changes, Shepard still says he has a mission to complete :D

In ME3 you pick which save you wish to import from ME2. This can be useful for doing multiple different romance runs in ME3 without having to do ME2 again. So, for instance, you can romance Jack, make a save, break up with her, romance Tali, make a save, break up with her, and then romance Miranda and make a save. You can then import the save with the romance you want for your current ME3 playthrough.
