Aren't you exaggerating a little bit, capn ? Without Overload, your engineer would be a weaker version of the GI. Also, I'm not sure that a 27,5% boost to weapon damage would lead to better results than a power which does huge damage against shields, staggers, offers crowd control capabilities and allows you to trigger fire explosions.

I am not exaggerating, and I mean exactly what I said.  I would skip Overload before HM on the GE, and I am unlikely to skip Overload.

The two best things to skip on the GE are Turret or probably Advanced Hardware.  I do not care for completely skipping AH on the GE any longer, although it works.  The Turret I am much more ambivalent towards.

HM is the best power on the character when you think about all the stuff you get for your talent points.  It is not the damage, it is the combination of Speed, Vision, and weapon buffs that you cannot get from gear or consumables.  All of them together is why Hunter Mode is one of the best powers.

I imagine people were assuming I was advocating a 60666 build when I said that, and I probably would not run that spec.  However, I would argue that 0 Overload is better than 0 HM on the GE with a plethora of weapons, especially a few that are heavy enough to limit Overload use anyway, or that don't need Overload to kill protected units.  Also I don't have much concern over whether or not you would end up with a weaker GI since that is basically what you end up with however you spec the GE anyway. :)

If someone wants to skip HM because they can't stand the visual effects, that is a different matter altogether.  I might go with a different race character though, if I was one of those people.

Not myself, I had understood that you were advocating a 46664 build, as I do too. About 0 overload being better than 0 HM, well, it depends on the weapon used. if you use a Typhoon, yes, I guess that 0 Overload > 0 HM. But with light or "semi-light" weapons, hum... I would like to see the match.

Weaker GI, yes, if we talk purely about the damage output, but that's how this game works anyway if we compare infiltrators to engineers. While the GI can be a lone killing machine, the GE can be a good staggering, detonating and healing teammate, while still offering a good dps on its own with any decent gun.

I agree it might come down to weapon, but I would wager that No-Overload would actually be better with more weapons than 0-HM on the whole.  Really I can't imagine too many weapons where that isn't the case, especially because it isn't really simply weapon damage buffs that make HM great, it is that you get so many beneficial bonuses.

Perhaps an example is Arc Pistol since it doesn't really get much use out of Accuracy (a little) and basically nothing from ROF.  Problem is that it doesn't really need Overload either and I will do better with HM Vision anyway.

Or the Javelin?  If you have it at a decent level and want to use decent amps and Phasic, you aren't going to miss Overload all that much.  And Turret is actually a little better for damage against Phantoms in this case anyway since you can deploy a turret to get her to bubble, and take advantage of double-hit with direct health damage.

Executioner is probably the one weapon that might really work better with no HM and spec'd into Overload.

I'm just hard pressed to think of a setup without HM that will end up better than No-Overload over the course of a match.  Theoretically you might make some hay with area priming and full Chain Overload.

Clearly a Thunderdome is in order. :)

^ That's because 20% movement speed bonus > any other bonus/power you can get in this game, grenades and a few exceptions excluded (TC, BC...)

@capn : it's funny, I was notably thinking about the Executioner (light, one shot) when I was writing the post.

And you're right, 1v1 capn !

Damn, we're not on the same platform... :(

Seriously, you would be OK for a 6 years delay for cross platform games ? Why ? Do you find that the PC players base is too low ? Or maybe to play with some BSNers ?

I would like that too pal. I have a PC, but I haven't played a single game on this platform and I feel that I would need months to become decent with a mouse and a keyboard.
