Merrill is driving me insane

For information she has no points in willpower, all con and mag. She has wrath of the elvhen, elemental weapons, rock armour sustainables active, in addition to blood of the first. She's using Voracity, both DLC jewelry items, another blood magic ring and belt of the primevals.

It was even worse with my blood mage Hawke, you can't even swap him off the party. "I have no mana" gets tiresome pretty quickly.
I haven't played DA2 for a while, but I thought they fixed this in one of the patches.

Hawke has never complained with blood magic active for me so it must have been patched. I'm on console so patches are compulsory.

I also advice trying Vengeance Anders, ignoring the heals and taking the dps spells. Statistically he can deal the highest damage possible by a mage but he lacks utility as he does not have access to entropy or extra cc Merril and Hawke have. He also dies the fastest.

There is a mod for that.
Not for consoles.
Edit: as it is, nothing, can do anything ![]()

I've already told Anders to F off at this stage due to him being an annoying ******.
I prefer to do a load of damage and then only turn healing aura on when I really need it, which with Merrill and Aveline is not very often. Keeping Anders alive is too much tedium, and no I'm not going to play as Anders before you suggest that. :-) Plus, as you say he lacks utility and I prefer to dump that job on Merrill so I can nuke things.

Anyway at least max Merril's arcane tree, its the only support she can provide, at least have her make someone immune for a couple of secs.
Also is your game patched? is it 1.4? Perhaps they fixed it in latest patch or reduced the frequency of people shouting I'm tired. Because before using the mod I mentioned I recall hearing it but not as frequent as you said.

Lol I guess that works, I was purely talking about gameplay mechanics and not personalities.

I finally figured it out. She only whines when I'm controlling her or when I have the whole party selected. I've been experimenting with positioning and using choke points and then I forget I've still got the whole party selected. Bit of a pain but I can work around it.

And often mystifying as to how it got past playtesting. DA2 isn't the worst culprit though, that honor falls to Dragon's Dogma which I find largely unplayable due to that and other major annoyances. (And yes, I know you can sit them down in a chair and tell the to stfu, but why not give us a options toggle) In DA2 the worst for me is Varric. I love the character in general but his combat dialogue really grates after a while. If only you could get them to talk maybe 1/10 of the time and just grunt a bit during combat for the rest. And don't get me started on arrows in the fscking knee. Therapeutic killing spree in Whiterun? Oh yes.

Ah yes. The never-ending "I used to be an adventurer like you, but then I took an arrow in the knee" comment. I found a mod for Skyrim (Guard Dialogue Overhaul) that completely fixes the guards' dialogue (I've only heard that line twice since install). Here is a little something especially for you, tirnoney:
As for repetitive dialogue in DA2, it is rather annoying. I don't mind if Hawke says something occasionally (because sometimes in the heat of battle I might forget to look at her health/stamina/mana bar), but I'd like it if the others would say something once to alert me to the problem, and then not say anything again.

Cannot recall which game, but the only line that has truly gotten me to re-start a game was the Violent voice type telling me to 'get a ladder and get off their back' during loot searches. Other than that, it has been tolerable.
That would be Dragon Age Origins. My current Warden has that voice, and I hate that line, but I'm too far along to start over. Funnily enough, I believe the person who voices the Violent voice type is the same person who voices Anora and Isabela in DAO.

Have not used the Violent female VO, but it could have been much worse; might have been Isolde repeating that same line "Teeegan! Get the ladder. Pleeeese!"

To be fair, the guards have a lot of phrases and some of them are quite funny. The wandering npcs in Whiterun are the worst since most of them have only a couple of phrases which they say EVERY SINGLE TIME you walk past them. heh. I have a route which takes me around the back of warmaiden's to the other shops just so I don't have to kill anyone on route.
"Got some good pieces out here if you're looking to buy, more inside."
"Do you get to the cloud district very often? Oh, what am I saying, of course you don't."
"Come to chat with an old woman? Do your good deed...argh...."
1000 bounty added to Whiterun.
Ah, good times.

I don't have Merrill take Blood of the First. I just focus her on Primal and Spirit schools and she turns into a damage-dealing machine who's quite hard to kill.

The thing I like about her blood magic is that I can stack loads of sustainables on her and she can still cast indefinitely with nothing put into willpower. When her health falls to 25% her tactics turn it off and she takes a health potion and a lyrium potion, then keeps on casting. With her high con she's so much more durable than Anders too.

I like Merrill, she has a few neat tricks up her sleeve but I find I need a healer for some of the tougher fights (I play a 2hander Hawke). How do you guys deal with this? I just switched back to Bethany.

I actually tried playing a BM Hawke recently and before Act 1 ended I had to respec him cause I was sick of him whining about being tired during battle. The devs really should have created some difference between being low on mana for BM reasons and being low due to actually using up mana. My Hawk had a large pool of health and could cast spells left and right yet was whining during the entire fight. lol!
