This is a question more for someone from bioware really. So watching the digi expo video, it says you can be over and under leveled to take on a mission/area. Question: will we be informed at all of the recommended level to go to these areas and do these missions? Because I would kinda suck to be over leveled (combat too easy etc) but it would suck even more to just trundle into an area, only for a monster to eat my face, and then discover my last save was 30 minutes ago or whatever.
Will we be informed of the recommended level of areas/missions

I don't know if we'll be informed about the level the enemies will be BEFORE entering an area, but we've seen so far that we'll be able to see what level each enemy we come across is. So that's probably how we'll be able to tell if an area is over/under our level or not.

This is why I would rather have scaled content. That way I KNOW the enemies I will be fair. I mean, if you are under-leveled for an area, you will probably either retreat or reload...with enemy scaling you can save yourself some time.
But oh well, I'm sure it will be fine.

I kinda hope not. There's a weird joy in coming to a new area, seeing the level of the enemies, and going 'nope!'
Then coming back over leveled and wading through them like so much water.
Yep. I don't play many games with this kind of feature, but I loved when that happened in Final Fantasy XII.

Agreed. That was what happened to me on more than a couple occasions in Borderlands 2, but we always had enough time to turn tail and run like the wind before we got totally squashed.
And nothing feels quite so good as absolutely dominating something that used to give you trouble, for sure. Killing a basic Ogre with one Crushing Prison is so much more satisfying when you remember how much effort it took to kill the one in the Tower of Ishal.

The content in a zone will have different difficulty levels, so it is not a zone wide constant.
For instance you may find a high dragon in one of the starter zones, but will have to leave it alone and come back later, unless you are really suicidal!

I anticipate much of my DAI experience to be spent avoiding fights all over Thedas...man I suck at combat! ![]()

I anticipate quite a few combats where my inquisitor goes in guns (figuratively) ablazing, and then nopes his way out of there real quick.

I think if your exploring a region you could run into enemies who are too strong for you but missions they'll probably tell you

And clearly non-level scaling is for hards.

Of course you will, a nice dragon will come along and point you in right direction. Don't mind the fire and gnawing of teeth on your flesh, is just how the dragon likes to communicate, I'm sure you'll understand what she's saying in short order.

I hope the levels of opponents are reasonably make sense and are reasonably intuitive. I have bad memories in SW:tOR of going slightly off course and running into a bunch of bug men who were 10 levels higher than me, despite looking identical to the bug men I was swatting just a minute earlier.

Kind of a tricky question to answer.. Even if enemies are typically higher than the Inquisitor and his/her party, player skill may tilt the balance in the party's favor. That depends on if they have any level correction scales in place. Like some games give penalties to attack, defense and evasion based on level difference. Which is typically the most arbitrary way of enforcing a level curve. (These differences should come from attribute, skill and talent points ideally)

I'm a fan of try and die. Having to reload my save that's an hour old just makes it more spicy. If I'm too dumb to save more often than that it's nobody's fault but my own. And rolling over easy enemies is also fun.
But it removes all challenge from the game. i like the combat to be fair, but challenging and being over leveled just makes it easy and boring.

It's one of my pet peeves about Origins: If your first choice was Orzammar, you would bite out your teeth on the first enemy. If you followed the ashes quest through all the way from Redcliffe, you would eventually have an extremely hard time. If you managed to beat the harder area first, the mages tower questline becomes trivial and boring. Yet the game gives little indication that Orzammar is high level and Tower is low level.
Having the occasional optional tough encounter in a low level area is fine, but having the option of doing 20 quests, but being too low level for 18 without being hinted at sucks.
