Eh, I see her more into Loghain than his daughter.  She barely mentions Anora in her conversations, it's all Loghain, Loghain, Loghain. The very first time I saw her, I felt there was something behind their interactions (though I know that's only head canon).  Whether it is unrequited or not, her devotion is all for him.  If he commanded her to toss Anora under a bus, she'd justify it and shove, following him blindly.  She can't even be talked down unless you use the persuade option on her at the Landsmeet.  No other option convinces her finally she's following the wrong path.

I talked her down a few times the first times I played, seeing killing her as kind of sad and pathetic, like kicking a puppy, and the prison break out (either with Alistair or having your companions come get you is riotously funny).  The fight is a fun one though, very challenging.

As for the gossip mongers, don't believe everything you hear.

That also happened in Awakening in the Wending Wood. Don't you remember? You had to kill 4 darkspawn to get back whatever each companion had equipped, and of course there was a chest with all your things near the Tal-Vashok merchant who I killed for helping the darkspawn.

Which, because of the ludicrous amount of bugs associated with that quest, makes for a pretty strong case against doing anything like that again.

During the prison break part of Origins, i think i remember hear one of the guards gossiping about both women, saying something along the lines of, "So did you hear the rumor about Ser Cauthrien." I don't know why I figured it had something to do with her and Anora, but considering that Loghain found Cauthrien and pretty much raised her himself, I assume her and Queen Anora are very close.

Prison break... as in the Warden and possibly Alistair in prison? And someone mentions Anora and Ser Cauthrien? You think it's a scandalous "Oh, they're lovers!" You don't think it has anything to do with the fact that Ser Cauthrien just caught the Warden trying to rescue Anora from Howe's place, then arrested the Warden for "trying to kidnap the queen"?

I just reinstalled the toolset just to see if there was actually a conversation between two guards that inferred that Cauthrien and Anora were "in a secret relationship".

In the dialogue files for Fort Drakon during Captured!, there is exactly one reference to Ser Cauthrien, in the den400_mainhallamb.dlg file, which is described as "This is a pair of guards hanging out during off-duty hours in the great hall of the fort."

Off-duty guard 2: Did you hear what happened to Ser Cauthrien?

Off-duty guard 1: No, what--

at which point one of the companions breaking in to rescue the Warden can engage them in some silly repartee like:

Alistair: I'm sorry to bother you.

Off-duty guard 1: What do you want?

Alistair: What are you doing hanging around in the hall? I'm sure this is a nice fort, but I wouldn't want to spend all my time here.
Off-duty guard 1: Well... you never know...

Off-duty guard 2: We might be needed at any time...
Alistair: Right. Bandits might steal... ballistae, or something. Very large bandits. There's probably a black market for... siege weapons somewhere.

Off-duty guard 2: Well, I can't say the... ah... scenery here isn't a good argument for spending time here.
Off-duty guard 1: What? You never said you had your eye on Tanna!

Off-duty guard 2: Of course I--you... you poacher! You're eyeing her, too!
Off-duty guard 1: I've been posted here longer than you have. You're the blighted poacher, you mangy little runt!

Sgt. Tanna, btw, is the female guard that the rescue team needs to get past.

Now, if you click on the guards repeatedly after the initial dialogue, one of them will blow you off by saying "Unless you're the king himself come back from the grave, or Queen Anora's long lost twin, leave us alone."

I suppose by rearranging the letters in that and adding a bunch of other letters (and then letting my wildest imagination run wild wild wild after extrapolating like a mad woman) I could possibly think that meant "Did you hear the rumour about Ser Cauthrien... and the Queen and OMG! It! Was! HOTTTTTTT!!!! WOOF!" *Flashheart-esque pelvic thrust*

Or maybe not.

Yeah. When you speak to him for the first time, he may explain to you that he was making a deal with the darkspawn, at which point you can choose to kill him for working with them.

Never.  That's one of the best fights in DA:O and I always fight my way out.  I have this thing about PCs winding up in prison, you see...

It's actually somewhat flattering that they would send that many soldiers to capture the four of us.  :P

I agree it's right up there with fighting the elves with the Werewolves fight. As for the topic rumor ummm....

I still haven't done that. Maybe with a Dwarf noble run if I get around to it before DAI.

I don't see them in a relationship.

I would say fighting her was the toughest in the game and she is voiced by AWR which makes her that much more of a bada**

Yes, and you have to do it right after learning that he's helping the darkspawn or the option goes away. It's absurd that you must hire him for Vigil's Keep to complete that merchant trading quest. Talk about irony. You send a merchant to help the Grey Wardens who has just recently been helping their arch-enemy indirectly through the same service. I killed him to cut off the darkspawn's trade source.

Didn't even know it was possible to kill him.  Of course, I've only done Awakenings all the way through a total of 3 times.

Toughest fight in Origins, to be sure. It's a bit humbling having your wrecking crew of a party troubled by a mere knight and her mooks. Nice sword to loot though. Has anyone ever surrendered to her? I never have, pride gets in the way.

I did on my recent play through. I did it because my Andromeda is diplomatic and relatively pragmatic. I could see it both ways in terms of it being wisest not to easily be captured by your mortal enemy but also I could see that it might be more gracious to do vs causing more death when I know I'll get released (I know I'll get released not in the meta gaming way, but rather because she's a badass and so is her crew).

That theory is far-fetched to say the least, though it would be kinda hawt so thanks for putting it in my head.

Best part of the thread, innit? Heh heh.

I haven't heard the line (must be when you're using your companions to bust you out), but it wouldn't surprise me if they had some sort of short-term fling together. I wouldn't expect it to be any more serious than that.

Some would say if it is not in lore it is not true. On the other hand I kind of like the idea that if its not in lore it may not be for the same reason other things are in lore. I prefer using my imagination for interesting twists and turns.

They don't necessary need to be lesbians to make an interesting diversion. Perhaps they both had an youthful thing for Cailan. Perhaps she was satisfying Loghain or maybe even Cailan. Just because lore doesn't say so doesn't mean it did not happen.

personally, i like the idea even, if they never consummated it, i would support such a thing. I thought Anora is even said, "Tis a shame about Ser Cauthrien." if you kill her and her guards at Fort Draken.

I have, one of the most comical parts in the game only happens in your surrender. I mean it's not like Mass Effect where you get critical mission failures, something is going to happen to get you out of their, and breaking out of Fort Draken is easier than fighting Ser Cauthrien.

The first time I played it on 360 I died so fast I thought it was a scripted event or something, lol.

Come to think of it, hardest fight in both games. Neither Meredith or the blob gave me much trouble.

The fight with the Arishok was the hardest fight in both games for me. I did eventually beat him of course, but the same can be said for Ser Cauthrien as well.

Gotta hand it to Cauthrien, she and her guards gave me a harder fight than Flemeth and the Archdemon combined.

There's a easy way to win the battle but you have to be a Mage and have the spell combo for Pefect Storm and Mana Clash.... You need you (the mage) and three tanks or two tanks and Leliana wih dual blades, If so its over pretty quickly. Used to give me fits until I worked it out. .

It's actually stupidly easy once your realize how scripted it is, and how easy it is to exploit.

Most of them don't follow you into the hall, so you can just keep pulling them into that room where the guard was getting a blowie and afterward just keep casting inferno/blizzard/tempest in the room, and they just stand there, dying.

Cauthrien still hits like a truck though.

I tried to draw them out of the main hall and back towards the room Anora was holed up in. My wrecking crew didn't follow me and got wrecked. Is this only possible as mage?

Its pretty hard without a mage. The mages and archers in that room are just overwhelming and that's not counting with Ser K all up in your face. I guess if you had Morrigan with you and set her tactics to use a lot of AOE then maybe. Though I've only tried once as a rogue and once as a warrior and it was pretty overwhelming. Its possible to bring all your peeps out in the hall by controlling them indivually but its really hard and takes a lot of time and luck.

I think there was an option to off him when you discovered he was cooperating with darkspawn.

I was of the opinion that Cauthrien had feelings for Loghain, actually, not Anora. The way she speaks of him....

Anyway, I usually start off the fight with 2 Holy Smites and a Mana Clash. The smites/clash kill the mages and knock everyone down, giving my group time to work the battle in my favor. I just draw them back into the hallway behind me, and wreck em.

I hear you, I'm the same. I dread the inevitable 'lock up the party and take away the gear only to stash it all in the next room' trope in RPGs. At least the Tomb Raider reboot tried it differently; your enemies helped themselves to your gear (at least some of it) and you have to kill them individually to recover them.

That also happened in Awakening...

Edit: Sorry didn't realize I was quoting a month old post. Ignore me.
