Women more likely to be non-humans in DA:I and other trends?

Perhaps, but if it is sexyness then what does it say about the fact that they are attracted to more "extreme" body types? Is it an indication of attraction to unusual bodies? Surely if it is about perving, which is often the justification hetro-men use to play female character without having their gender/sexuality questioned then human female would be a lot more popular.

I don't think most would question a straight male's interest in female elves upon examination of the way they appear in the Dragon Age universe, as with many universes. Indeed, Liv Tyler made for an absolutely stunning Arwyn in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

As for dwarves and qunari... different strokes? I don't know that the word justification need be applied here so overarchingly.

It seems to me that the reason that many people play as a female of another race is solely due to novelty. Female protagonists in video games are rare, non-humans are too. Compare this to people who play games like with purposely grotesque characters, or white guys playing as a portly black woman with superpowers and the voice of Nolan North in Saints Row 4.

Except the data lines up with the data we already know and people have been commenting on for months... People know that human male is the most popular and dwarfs are the least popular. This data lines up with that, so it doesn't seem to represent any skewed social agenda on this forum... the extra indications we do get from it though add a bit more to the overall picture.

But you're using this data to make assumptions on how women are viewed. If this was official Bio data gained from player accounts gathered after DAI's release then sure, but this is only a pre release fan made poll. Nothing is guaranteed.

I'm playing as a female qunari first precisely because of the lack of novelty: she's the only BioWare character that's as tall as I am.

I'm looking forward to making my first inquisitor a Vashoth female. (could we get a race name for these people?) It's become something of a tradition for me to make my firsts women. And this is the first time we can be this race, I'm wondering how the people of Ferelden and Orlais will treat us.

I'd be more comfortable speculating reasons if we knew the gender distribution of the voters.

They were called kossith before the Qun. Now they're not.

In-universe, nobody refers to them as anything other than "qunari" (or "ox-men" and variants, for those who like racial slurs).

I don't really see the problem with speculating about such things. We're all aware that this poll isn't a serious reflection of the DA player base.

Agreed - although I think people would still argue that such a poll would be unscientific and only indicative of the demographics on this site, rather than general trends.

That being said, I think the "tumblr buzzwords" that RedInfitada is using are pretty spot-on, and certainly amongst my female friends who are going to play this game, I'm in the minority for wanting to play a human first. Women are used to not playing "themselves" in games but rather an avatar; it makes sense that they'd be more willing to go outside the default human mode right off the bat.

To be honest, I was half-joking. Of course lots of people play as nonhuman women in order to have a different gaming experience, but as Ophir147 and TheJediSaint said, there is a novelty factor in playing as a nonhuman woman and it's nice to just have a pretty face to look at. There's a reason women in fantasy games often wear ridiculously skimpy armor. Some guys just like to play as a sexy Night Elf or Draenei in WoW.

And I don't think attraction to fantasy races is in any way uncommon. Elves are almost invariably meant to be beautiful in fantasy settings. Dwarves... well, they're cute. They're short and have cute faces. Qunari are exotic and some guys are into tall and/or muscular women. All fantasy races have an "exotic" factor about them, really.

The same can go for sci-fi races as well. Hell, look at the asari; they're a race composed entirely of women (techhnically mono-gendered, but come on; they look just like human females). Before they met other aliens, they reproduced solely by having lesbian sex.

I used to work for an eating disorders organisation, so we studied a lot of body image perception charts, surveys etc. Women tended to view variation in body types a lot more than men, so women tended to view themselves much more on extreme ends of the spectrum i.e. short, tall, fat, skinny etc.then men. Often it was because women's appearance is commented on so much more than men. Men tend to see themselves as having an "average" body type, much more even though their bodies vary in dimensions as much as women.

I play human first, but that doesn't mean I play humans at the expense of other races. Played female mage once in DA:O didn't like it, but it was enjoyable importing into DA2 because if broke the trend of always male human hero.

All this said I relate to Qunari and Dwarves the most, I enjoy Dalish back stories the most, but find that playing a Human makes most sense in the setting.

It's like in TES, I can't play a non-Merrish Nerevarine and a non-Mannish Dragonborn because it doesn't make sense to me.

but I wonder why the correlation between female PC and non-human. Is it because women are more used to being "othered," where as men feel more at home with having a more central, clear cut dominant role? Maybe it is because women are socialised to reflect more on body types and fashion that the different frames carry more interest.

I don't know but I think there some interesting social data here.

Maybe male players just like to look at female elven or female qunari butts.

Very interesting social data indeed!

Why would they prefer to look at them more than wanting to look at a human female butt?

Oh, I don't doubt that. But I think that 198 cm is considered "tall" pretty much everywhere other than basketball. :)

Because they've seen human female butts not only on the other websites they visit, but also in all the other games they play.

Elven and qunari butts are a rarity, qunari butts even a novelty. Never before has a female qunari butt been seen before. Fresh butts for everybody!

Clearly all these women are choosing dwarves out of the faint hope of a Varric romance.

Are you seriously trying to study male/female behavior through a poll on a dragon age forum? The only true answer you'll find is "because its fun!"

As was repeatedly stated by the OP, no, this isn't serious, this is just talking about the results in an informal way. Nobody's writing a paper on this, calm down.

I probably play a ratio of 3:1 for human and elves but only if the elves are human relatable in terms of looks, basically sexy humans with pointy ears.

No interest in qunaris or dwarfs.

I'm not trying to **** on this thread like others are, but most people on the Bioware forum play non-humans because they find it more interesting.

Well as far as the gender of the voter. I'm male and I voted for female qunari. As for the reason why. First I don't see myself as the character. I'm more the Jiminy Cricket in the relationship. I'm off to the side giving advice and analyzing the situation. I choose female characters because I find helping women more enjoyable then helping men. This even extends to my real life. I found tutoring women to be more enjoyable then the men. Though the women did have a tendency to actually try the problems before coming to me.

As for the choice of a qunari. A lot of it has to do with body type. I find the image of a strong capable woman more pleasing them a barbie doll. I want the Inquisitor to look like she could take your head off if you provoked her. Plus I find the notion of frightening as hell to look at but friendly as can be amusing.
