the conclusions you're making arn't supported by a poll of this kind...

Not just basing off the questionable sample size.... but that you've no indication what percentage of players who have chosen male/female characters are themselves male of female...

Could be that few women voted in this poll and they all selected human female...

I think you're just making you're own interpretations of fairly open data

i'll play as everyone eventually, but playing as a chick is different because in some cases that world treats you differently. Same with elves or dwarves.

Those 800+ people represent a minority of people that will actually play the game, so the "data" is likely skewed.

Furthermore, many people will play the game more than once.

Except nobody's drawing conclusions, as you would see if you'd read through the comments. And isn't it just as likely that few men voted on this poll and they all selected human male? What data do you have that makes you assume the respondents are mostly male?

Agreed - although I think people would still argue that such a poll would be unscientific and only indicative of the demographics on this site, rather than general trends.

Even so, a poll on the demographics of this site can itself be interesting. A poll that shows that among BSN users, females are more likely to play others races than males is interesting, even if it's not a reflection of the DA fanbase at large.

Unfortunately this data does not itself suggest that.

I generally like playing something that is far from my own mindset which normally means non human and non male.

And evil.

Well, the data itself doesn't suggest much of anything, other than that there are a surprising number of people who want to play human considering the emphasis fans have put on getting to play other races in this game. But yeah, it kind of makes me wish there was a poll that asked both the player's gender and the gender of their first playthrough PC.

I think we do have to take care in drawing conclusions based on the data we have, given how it has been gathered. The participants are self selecting and do not necessarily constitute a representative sample of the people who will eventually play the game when it goes live. That said, the numbers do appear to broadly correlate with what Bioware have told us about their internal telemetrics of DAO (humans most popular, dwarves least), so it may have some value as a tool for extrapolating whether the BSN regulars are representative of the overall player pool, but we will only ever know for sure if Bioware reveals the results of their statistics at a later date.

However, it's also worth keeping in mind that the poll was asking people what their FIRST Inquisitor was going to be, and so does not take into account what people might play subsequently. When I played Origins, I started with Human male, because it was the "default" setting, but over the course of many playthroughs, I tried all the races and probably played females more than males (despite being male myself in RL) because I felt the narrative worked better as a female for a number of the Origins. In Inquisition, I plan to play human male first because the character concept I have developed for my initial Inquisitor is a human male (and because I will probably romance Cassandra along the way), but I have no doubt that will do at least one playthrough as each race, and I will almost certainly play some of them as a female character.

Overall, I don't think the data we have gives us anything like a full picture of what DA players prefer to play, but it gives us an interesting snapshot of where they plan to start.

I would make one, if I could figure out how to create polls in the main forum. The option isn't there for some reason (though it is in groups).

I will be a grizzled male warrior who feels a profound male angst inside but keeps a somber, determined persona. As I pass women swoon and men tremble. Like the secret child of Don Draper and Josey Wales. And someone who takes himself very, very, very seriously.

I'm not sure if the engine will be able to handle the manliness.

Just another data point!

Eh, there are already like three different threads on the first page of this subforum about what type of Inquisitor people are playing at and what that means and all that. Plus, again, any poll like that would get shouted down as UNSCIENTIFIC!!!!!!!

Well, as a guy who voted in that poll, I can tell you that I plan on playing a female elf on my first (and possibly only) run.  Reason being is that I played very similar characters in Origins and 2 (human male mages) and wanted a very drastic change this time around.

The analysis of the data is interesting, however.  I would be very intrigued to find out how many male gamers said they would be playing female characters, or vice versa.  It'd also be neat if we had data on how many people planned on doing multiple playthroughs, and if so what type of characters they intended to play as.

I know I have a tendency to play male characters in my first run, and female characters on my second in Bioware games.  I know a lot of people however stick to only one gender when doing multiple playthroughs - and some of them say they play characters gendered after themselves, while others claim to only ever play the opposite gender.

I'm a simple woman with simple tastes. Just let me play a tree hugging prancing elf that's all I ask. :P

Later playthroughs I'll branch out and try out the new flavour available the Qunari, 2nd playthrough I'll go back to good ol reliable vanilla human male. Elves will always be my preferred first choice, favourite fantasy race, love em for many reasons. Point I'm making I like to mix and match, be it male or female and different races, I like variety and different experiences.

I chose Qunari female, and I tend to play non-human females the most even though I'm male. For my part, it's a simple reason. Male human heroes are dime a dozen, they're everywhere in all of fiction. Non-human women heroes are significantly more rare, and thus more interesting because of that rarity. And Female Qunari is the most exotic combination of sex and race possible, because it's the only combination never once seen in-game before. I've seen every other combination you can have in DA games, except female Qunari. So of course that's what I'll pick first, the novelty factor can't be denied.

I know I play mostly non-humans...

If I remember correctly, my characters have been; commoner dwarf, city elf, mage elf, dalish elf, noble dwarf and human. In that order. Then there's been at least one more commoner dwarf, another mage elf, male that time, and a few more city elves one of wich was male...

I never completed the playthrough with the dalish elf, noble dwarf or the human characters. Actually way to many of my characters never even left Ostagar...

I think just like playing the underdogs.

On my reboots i'm facing the same trouble, but in the original i choose to play in the next order: city elf (male), dwarf noble (originally male, now female), dwarf commoner (also male), female mage elf, dalish elf warrior male (these two now merged in one female dalish mage on the reboot), human mage, genderbended characters of each of the origins (starting with city elf female) AND finally human noble (female)...

I don't like to have humans as characters, maybe because i despite them (taking in count my first character killed all humans that he could and sided with werewolves and mages will give you an idea of what my desires are) or maybe because i find them the most boring of species.

A small sample size of the audience--whose genders aren't even defined--isn't exactly scientific. I will likely play a male Dwarf, but have considered playing a female Dwarf. This isn't for novelty or for the fact that I love those thick Dwarf hips (I do, fyi), but it's because I find the Dwarves to be the most interesting race, especially the females.

It's not an issue of sample size - national election polls can be around 1000 people - but of sample bias.  People who respond to a poll on the forums aren't likely to be representative of the wider player base, which would be true even if you got 10s of thousands of respondents.

But that also doesn't mean that the poll results can't be interesting, even if they only reflect the people on these forums who choose to respond.

The poll on what race/class you plan to be in your first play through can be found here:

http://forum.bioware...or-will-you-be/

Most of the posts in the thread are just individuals stating what their inquisitor would be which is cool... but I thought it would be good to examine the meta data on a separate thread, rather than fish for my and others comments among 8 pages.

A lot of people have commented before the poll on how human male is by far the most popular choice.  But perhaps even more interesting than that is that is that the poll indicates more female inquisitors then males in every non-human race, by quite a large margin.

Now it is true that males can play female inquisitors and visa versa (be interesting to do a poll on that), but I wonder why the correlation between female PC and non-human. Is it because women are more used to being "othered," where as men feel more at home with having a more central, clear cut dominant role? Maybe it is because women are socialised to reflect more on body types and fashion that the different frames carry more interest.

I don't know but I think there some interesting social data here. I would like to hear people's comments but as I know where these sorts of threads CAN go, please keep the discussion respectful. I don't want it shut down early.

In a pool I chosed female Iqusitor and an elf. The reason for that is simple. First, about my PC sex. As a female in rl I like to play females in RPG games, Im not able to feel any connection with PC if it's male. About races. Well since Baldur's Gate my favourite are elves and I create elven female PC in every RPG games where it's allowed. ( but I could be very happy playing as Asari in ME serie too).

I didn't say they couldn't be interesting, I said it was unscientific.

In a perfect world, my first character is always a male human mage. My second in Inquisition will he a female dwarf rogue.

However, in both DA2 and ME, I found that the available voice-set didn't suit that character, soni had to switch genders.

In that case, my first Inquisition character would then be a female mage of a race yet to be determined (I have the name, but not the race). The second would still be the dwarf.

The question seems to indicate that I am playing the game only once.  As with other games that have allowed it I most often play all races and a combo of sexes.  The first one is usually human male.

I'm the same as this, any game that lets you, my first game is always the default to get a feel of it, then I mess around with the other races.

Well, not all of us. I'm playing a female dwarf on my first run. (Varric romance would be a nice bonus, but I'll play female dwarf first even if he's suddenly got Iron Bull fever and will only date male qunari.)

I have two reasons for this decision:

1) Dragon Age dwarves are amazing. Their origin stories were my favourites in DAO, and I love the lore surrounding them.

2) I find it easier to identify with them than the other races, on a physical level. If I were a foot shorter, I'd blend right in around Orzammar. On the other hand, I look nothing like any female human I've ever been able to play in a video game. (Or the elves, either. Needless to say, I am also not a seven-foot-tall horned giantess, although that sounds like fun.)
