Apologies if this has been done to death....

I get that Hawke has plot armor and is the main character, but is there a in game reason to why Mage Hawke can get away with being free from the Templars?

A few times the game seems to hint that your wealth and influence play a part. Anders talks about how lesser mages look up to you as an example, so if we take his words as factual it does seem to be fairly common knowledge that Hawke is a mage. Short answer: because reasons. <handwave>

"Ah yes Hawke being a mage. We have dismissed this claim."

Or like Jukaga said, Hawke's title and wealth has a role. Or maybe Varric has a role in it keeping the Templars at bay, like he has the Carta & random thugs kept away from Anders.

Prologue: Meeran/Athenril keeps you safe. Meeran through the Red Irons influence and power, Athenril via how ever she hides her smuggling ways.

Act 1: Varric bribes his agents to throw the templars off your scent. He needs you for his expedition, so he and Bartrand probably agree that keeping you out of the Gallows is the way to go.

Aveline also pulls her weight, since you got her into the city and you are the closest thing you have to a family. In this act she's an active member in the guard/the guard captain, so she probably has some connections.

Finally, you are a pretty small chip in a big bag, the templars have other mages to hunt for.

Act 2: You are rich enough to pay your own bribes. (The same money you put aside for food and such).

The Viscount also gives you protection, since you are besties, lovers or whatever with the Arishock and he needs someone to calm that bull.

In this act, Aveline has become the guard captain, so the guards pretty much ignore you. Varric is also pulling all the strings he can get his grubby hands on. Thrask and Cullen have also developed a crush on you. They want to keep you happy ~ <3

And you also have enough cash to buy monthly chips for Meredith, so she lets you live.

Act 3: You saved the City. Meredith has enough heat, she doesn't need to anger Kirkwall more by imprisoning their Champion.

You are also able to pay your own bribes and you have gathered powerful friends, outside and inside the templars.

You are the bag of chips now! Kirkwall fears you!

I would have liked some sort of confrontation for mage Hawke even if the plot armour remained intact. Maybe a templar interrogation or some quest to cover up your mageiness. But i can live with the hand wave most of the time apart from one major main quest scene: Wilmod's camp in act 1. Cullen should be discharged from the order for that bit of gross negligence. Fireballs falling all around him and not a peep about it.

There's also the conversation about Keran where you can say you 'conducted tests' and for some odd reason our vigilant templar doesn't want to probe further.

But yeah, plot armour.

Well a reason Cullen was sent to Kirkwall is because he freaks out over about what happened with Uldred in Origins *after game* and kills 2 mages.

So he should of had more of a reason to be discharged then instead of interrogating Wilmod and finding out his suspicions were correct. He had the right to interrogate him anyways, he's Knight-Captain.

Um, i was referring to him completely ignoring Hawke's use of magic during the battle at Wilmod's camp. Considering you can unleash a firestorm all around him, i'm guessing he's actually a blind nug. :-)

There was going to be a sidequest that would address this but it was cut for being convoluted.

I could see that working for Act 2 and 3, but what about Act 1?

But that protection doesn't apply to Bethany?

During Act 1 the protection probably applies to Bethany as well. But while Hawke and Varric are away in the Deep Roads, the Templars see a chance to swoop in and grab her.

Hawke and Varric were gone for a long time. Varric estimated that the walk out of the Deep Roads would probably take a week + the time it took them to navigate to the Ancient Thaig. (Which includes the little detour around the blockade). Going through the Thaig also took some time, given how many foes they fight.

Bartrand returned to Kirkwall and probably arrived way ahead of Varric.* He probably reported Varric dead, since he probably didn't anticipate them ever escaping the Thaig. Now Bethany only has Aveline speaking for her. Aveline may or may not be a guard captain by now. I'd assume that Aveline prefers Bethany in the Circle. Not that she dislikes Bethany, but to a normal person (who were married to templars), mages are a ticking time-bomb.

*Meredith says that a dwarf sold her the idol. I'm guessing the dwarf is Bartrand.

We can assume that Varric deals with Bartrand in the middle of Act 2 (since the quest is activated after the Poision gas quest). We can also assume that Bartrand sold the Idol before it turned his brain to mush. So he probably sold it when he returned to Kirkwall. Meredith probably knew of the expedition (it was on everyones lips) and probably inquired how it went and Bartrand tells her that Varric and Hawke are dead.

The Templars wait a few days, to see if Hawke returns. But then the order is issued (and Cullen is sent to retrieve Bethany). When Hawke arrives, it's too late to ignore the order and letting Bethany stay would make the Templars appear weak in the eyes of the people. Bethany is also willing to go (asking Hawke to step down if he/she objects) so the only thing that can be done is to take her to the Circle.

I don't think it was ever implied that Aveline had anything to do with Bethany going to the circle. As for Cullen, I am not his biggest fan and I hoped I could end him in a brutal fashion. But alas, not meant to be.

Just added her since I mentioned she could have helped Hawke in Act 1. I doubt she had a hand in putting Bethany in the Circle, but she doesn't seem to have tried to prevent it either.  :)

It doesn't really work for any of the acts, thus the handwave. I mean just carrying around this staff with a bright red orb whilst farting lightning bolts in the middle of hightown should be a big enough clue.

There's also the scene where you rescue Emeric from Darktown thugs in The First Sacrifice. Okay he might want to go easy on you because you've just saved his life, but still...

OP - the short answer is no, not official in-game reason. You'll have to headcanon something. The above suggestions are as good as anything I can come up with - and this is specifically why I don't play as a mage.

In Act 1, it could be Varric paying off Templars to fudge with reports and look the other way. By Act 2, you're wealthy and influential enough to pay your own bribes, and in Act 3, you're the Champion, and Meredith doesn't need the sort of heat that would come from locking up the city's savior.

Act 1 seems to imply the templars are onto you and you should go on this expedition with a quickness. No way to tell how much time it takes for Hawke to get gone but I just chock it up to gameplay/story segregation and got out of there quickly. His influence is said to protect him in other acts.

Well, he was fighting abominations, the firestorm and magic stuff around him could as well have been cast by the demons

The Veil is thin in and around Kirkwall, thus more demonic influence is possible, including various forms of mental deception. This is confirmed thru the Codex entries for The Enigma of Kirwall; possibly others:

http://dragonage.wik...ma_of_Kirkwall

After reading this in game, in following campaigns I noticed that outside of Kirkwall starting in Act 1, everyone seems to notice Mages. Then as one advances the story, such mental clouds form in everyone including Hawke (eg; Merrill as a Blood Mage), with the exception of Anders, who has a direct connection to the Fade. As more time passes, the deception grows stronger, as well as the influence of Blood Magic.

Works for me, at least.
