What I'm asking is, if you were given a chance to play a game were you could romance characters to your heart's content, would you play it?

No. There's more to Bioware games than just romance. Much more. Period.

I think people underestimate how big the potential crowd for dating simulators is.  There have been no real high budget dating sims and I think that's part of the reasons they don't really exist, but I'm sure if a company was willing to invest in a dating sim, they would have a crowd for it.  The rare games with dating aspects have huge followings.  Harvest Moon and Bioware games.

I can not thinik of any other company that focuses so much on romances besides these two companies.  Romance does exist in other games but is usually only a tiny part, usually lacking or underdeveloped.

I think the fact that the romance aspects of these games are the most talked about and debated aspects is proof that there's a crowd for romance based-games.  Yet I can not understand why no big game company has thought of making a high budget dating simulator.  It just baffles me.

Nah. It's only fun if I get to slay dragons and get laid.

That said, a Dragon Age game that focussed less on combat and honed in on the story elements - romantic and otherwise - would probably still be fun for me. Telltale are making Tales from the Borderlands ... Tales from Thedas, anyone?

(What I really want, though, is a Dragon Age strategy game. Romance optional.)

I very much enjoy the romances, but something tells me that if they were front-and-center the most important aspect of the game I would enjoy them much less. It's one of those cases of less is more, I think: when the lines and scenes come up, they are so rare that it makes them feel special.

A game devoted to nothing but romance would miss part of the reason they work so well in BioWare games.

Yes, because the writers are pretty good and would involve someone/everyone dying in the story if you miss something crucial....

Perhaps you forgot to give flowers to Morrigan-chan resulting in her getting pissed off and setting the academy on fire.

I'd love a dating game with BioWare level writing.  I would probably miss the other bits of action and story though.  Perhaps just a game focused primarily on the relationships, which also includes a plot storyline going on too.  It wouldn't have to include combat even, but yeah something would have to be going on to bring the characters into each other's orbit (and make things exciting).

No. The same way I don't read romance novels (boring!) while enjoy reading fiction book with a romance subplot. Good setting and story comes first while romance is optional.

Yup. I love RPGS AND dating simulators. I know amazing a person can like both, who knew?

I love them combined but still enjoy them separate.
But personally Dragon Age mixes both things I love. Both are fine on their own but combined they make my perfect game.

So yes I would play it, but I'd prefer Dragon Age to be exactly the way it is and expand upon what they already have then attempt a different genre.

Also dating simulators are niche. BSN users are too obsessed with romances, doubt majority of the players care about them that much.

Quite possibly.

Like another said a high budget dating sim written by BioWare could have serious potential.  A lot of gamers enjoy anime that sprout up as a result of Japanese dating sims.  I don't, but that's because the characters usually suck.  BioWare could fix this problem.

A dating sim by BioWare could be highly thought-provoking and emotional, especially since most of the effort is going into the story and character writing.  I would expect there to be an actual plot involved with events that take different turns depending on your choices and how you treat or interact with the potential LIs.

So, if done well, then yeah I'd give it a chance.

Not a pure dating sim as i'm not into those but a bioware visual novel that had romance elements? Definitively.

No doubts in my mind bioware could write a good visual novel with lots of choices and put together a good romance plot but i would never want a pure romance game.

I have no idea. I enjoy simulation games (such as Kairosoft's games, and used to be really into the Sims), and have some experience with romance sims with Remember Me by Winter Wolves. Which I thought was entertaining enough, but I couldn't justify $16+ for a 5 hour phone game to buy any of their other titles.

I'd be open to checking it out I suppose.
