If you could stop social networking, would you do it?

So say you've got a magical solution that will stop social networking forever, would you use it? I personally would because of how social networking interferes in so many people's lives. To quote Einstein:

"I fear the day when the technology overlaps with our humanity. The world will only have a generation of idiots."

This has come true when you see everyone on their phones checking their social media accounts everywhere they go, no matter where they are or what they're doing.

Now I don't use Facebook (or anything of the sort) and never have or will but I can rarely have a conversation with a friend without them being half occupied on their social media account and I find that annoying.

I think stopping social media would be beneficial to society and I don't know why but I'd love to see those people dependent on social media (those people who are addicted to it) squirm and struggle without it. Like, if my jimmies are rustled, seeing these people would totally unrustle them.

Sure. The only social networking I use is this forum and one for another game I play. I always thought the idea of Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter, and whatever else out there was stupid.

Depends on your definition, I wouldn't consider this social networking. We're not sharing photos, videos or commenting on our private lives and I'd imagine not many of us bring and communicate with our friends here. Most people on their phones are using twitter, tumblr or facebook where they're updating their status or posting a picture of what they're doing or some such nonsense.

Then we have that selfie craze and hashtag nonsense...

I use social networks sometimes, but I prefer chat apps (like Whatsapp) to chat with friends. Still, why on earth would I stop it? If people enjoy it, let them.

I have cookies and milk. Plus Shrek, he totally approves this cause.

Now let's go kidnap Mark Zuckerberg and make an example of him.

I wouldn't stop it either and it's not because I use much of any of those social things out there, only Whatsapp and msn and skype occasionally but nothing like facebook or instagram, I see no point in those, I do however see a point in people being able to communicate through the web across the world.

As amusing as it would be to rustle the jimmies of all the social media people, it's already equally as amusing to watch the rustling of the jimmies of the people who hate social media.

So I'd let it stay.

I don't really use social networks at all but I still wouldn't force people to stop using them, it's their choice.

Depends someone's situation really. You never really know why someone might "spend too much time on the net". Hasty judgement is a form of ignorance.

Do I sometimes feel like I want nuke social networking? Yes.

I do believe that some people *really* ought to stop shoving their phones in their faces 24/7 because it causes them to become oblivious to their surroundings. And I also feel no need to write a tumblr blog on every little thing that happens. No one cares. Whatever happened to keeping a journal that says "keep out" on it? Instead, a vast majority of people in this era use the internet has their diary. Or people that insist on showing off their face on all social sites, the internet isn't a modeling agency. But at least I get some entertainment out of it, like the girls the post crap like: "Going to work! *takes a selfie" or "I just had tacos! *takes a selfie*" hahahah.

Some people have been through events that caused them to shut themselves off from the world thus they develop a relationship with an online community. Perhaps they actually build strong friendships with some online people and then meet up with them irl.

And I can easily count at least 8 BSN people that started a relationship with another BSNer and now they're living together/married/have kids together. You'd be surprised.

Life is all about balance imo. As long as someone still takes care of their responsibilities (bills, work, school, etc) then let them spend as much time on the internet as they please. Is them being the internet affecting you personally? Only if you let it.

But honestly, don't take life or the things in it too seriously. Life really is way too fcukin short for that.

It's really useful. It tells me that I really don't need to know some people better. I thought attention fishing scene teens cease to exist once they get past 20+, I was wrong.

I don't like social networking so I hardly ever do it, problem solved. I don't care about other peoples problems with it as long as they don't make it my problem as well.

Oh and this. Although I am close with some BSNers, I do agree that BSN isnt anything like youll find on fb, twitter, tumblr, etc. Ive tried fb a few times, only for good friends and family Im not locally close by, but I always end up deleting it. Too much bs and people sharing selfies every hour. I didnt forget what you look like, just stop man.

Well I suppose Facebook has it uses for one such as I. I've used it to dig up dirty information on my friends and colleagues, so it's good for that, I'll give it that.  :P

But I seriously think it does more harm than good. Sure it connects people but WhatsApp does that and better too. I've heard and seen so many people getting cyberbullied on Facebook because they're not educated about the "dangers" of online and they're also idiots who open the privacy of their page to the public and accept friend invites from everyone.

To demonstrate how these are dangers, I remember tracking the exact addresses of several people in my class at college just from Facebook information they provided publicly. I can only imagine how many random people there are, who have private information on their pages for anyone to access.

Second best thing is for schools to teach about internet privacy now especially concerning Facebook.

I've never used Facebook and never will. Personally I think it's stupid how much information people willingly put out on the internet, especially on a platform like Facebook which is always changing, and whose CEO called its users "dumb fucks" for doing so.

Still, its their choice so, no, I wouldn't stop social networking. I do resent that not participating in it is a social stigma.

Interesting, I was gonna disagree with him because a lot of the people we used to know on the old site (Gemma for example, and I can think of a bunch of others that I'm not sure you know, like Yoko/Blitz+Kal/Darth/Ghost) really only used it for social purposes, they didn't actually ever go to the game forums.
