Totally called Ostwick, and I get to be a Circle Mage!  Fantasy fulfilled.  Human mage is going to be a great playthrough.  But I have to admit that Dalish Mage sounds very enticing as well.  This info is great.

Also it seems strange that so many find the ranged defense bonus to be sucky.  My first thought was "damn, that's good!".  Typically in action games ranged damage can seriously fvck up your day.  A 25% defense bonus to all the ranged attacks coming your way?  Sounds great to me.  Then again I tend to play on the highest difficulty, so from my perspective that ish matters a LOT.

Okay, ranged defense?  Really?  I mean, Dwarves have lore for their magic resistance, humans are adaptable and have the extra ability, qunari are massive and have extra health.  All of it is logical and backed up by lore.  Ranged defense is so ...arbitrary.

It shows their nimbleness, while not pigeon-holing them as rogues.

I suppose that makes sense.  I did like the magic boost they got in DAO, but it did mean they were the worst class to play as warrior or rogue.

Playing on nightmare mode mid/late game will probably make both the elven and dwarven racials miles better than the human and qunari ones.

Really hoping the Qunari bonus is more than just an initial boost, otherwise it's kind of lame.

Qunari mercenary seems to be the most open background of them all. Compared to the others, as Qunari, we just happen to be there for our own reasons. the +50 health is the only downside I see so far.

Human origin is the second best. We don't need to be a believer or completely in line with the mages, as it seems that we can follow them because there is no other choice.

The dwarf one seems to be very focused but it's also very interesting(maybe Varric has a few things to say about it). Going in as a spy fits this origin.

Elf is the only one that is weird. They could've done a lot better than copy paste the spy thing from the dwarf origin. No huge loss as I never bother playing as an elf anyway.

Really a great way to wake up to! Love that we now have character backgrounds, and am so glad that the Qunari are part of a mercenary group. I was certain they would be and now I hope there will be some awesome exchanges with Iron Bull about their mercenary groups.

EDIT: Think all race backgrounds are cool, except Human. Sounds boring like hell. Sent to the summit b/c to help relatives? Really?

Agreed!  I wonder if it includes ranged magical damage as well?  It sounds like a useful bonus, they all sound good to me :)  Also, I like that they don't predispose a player to any one class for a race.

Considering how these backstories ruined any ideas I had and me not liking what they are, I think that is perfectly justified reaction.

well why did you make up your own backstories?

I mean that was never the case in DA (its not Skyrim people) so why think that your backstories would somehow work?

always headcanon something and then blame Bioware just great!

That ranged defense is reeeeaaaallllly lame. Why not a boost to stamina or something?

I think it's been established from the start that the PC would have a set backstory at the beginning.  That was true of the previous two Dragon Age games.

I think you could be against the circle system and still want peace.

Absolutely! :)  I imagine there will be good opportunity to put forth your own feelings on it.

This is SO COOL :D

Although...

Does anyone else think there's something...off about the Qunari eyes?

Qunari...outside of the Qun is a bummer to me. Would have preferred to be actually a member of the Qun.

I suspect you'd have to write completely different dialogue for a Qunari if they were a part of the Qun.

Well you are the youngest in the family, who knows how many other siblings or relatives are ahead of you when it comes to prestige and heritage. And you are in the Chantry conclave to help relatives to seek peace between the mages and templars, so there is a possibility the Human Inquisitor might have a chance to speak up.

I am personally satisfied with the backgrounds. Never expected much from them, as BW have stated themselves, but I do hope they play some roll in the game other than just small references.

Personally I would have given the Elves a bonus to Mana and* Stamina. On one end you have the Dalish mages who aren't restricted like Circle Mages and taught to fear their power (Mana Bonus) and for Rogues/Warriors, their nomadic lifestyle and light frame give them seemingly unnatural endurance.

*AND because Mana and Stamina are mutually exclusive. (A class either gets one or the other)

I suspect you'd have to write completely different dialogue for a Qunari if they were a part of the Qun.

Not necessarily. Just two lines.

1: "No."

2: "Then we fight."
