From the DA wiki:

The Tal-Vashoth are not a single group.[1] Therefore they are not a resistance effort, there is no organized Tal-Vashoth culture, nor can they be said to have any collective goals.[1] Just how much an average Tal-Vashoth has abandoned their upbringing in their heart depends on the individual.[2] A Tal-Vashoth may choose his or her name arbitrarily, it could be a word they like the sound of, or it could be something they think describes their new role. Others may not choose any name at all.[1] Many of the Tal-Vashoth cut their horns off because they think it makes them look tougher and scarier.[3][4] Mages are tolerated by other Tal-Vashoth, but they are still regarded with suspicion since they lack proper training and therefore might be dangerous to those around them.[1] The Tal-Vashoth still keep the former Saarebas leashed if those are in their company.

As far as I understood it the Qunari Inquisitor wasn't Tal-Vashoth in that way though.

This article describes the Tal-Vashoth as people who have broken away from the Qun. Our Inquisitor was never a part of the Qun, their parents might have been but they weren't.

This indicates that there is some sort of culture associated with the Vashoth, roaming Merc bands don't tend to have kids. Also the Mage Qunari Inquisitor is not chained, this too indicates that the Inquisitor has some sort of different culture because normal Tal-Vahsoth keep Mages chained.

Edit: spotted some typos

Why are the humans always nobles?

Cousland's a obviously a noble.

Hawke is a noble. A disgraced one but still a noble.

Even the human mage in origins is an Amell and thus maybe/probably related to Kirkwall nobility.

And now the human inquisitor too? What? They couldn't be a regular guardsman? Or a spy like the dwarf and dalish? Or a mercenary like the Qunari? Or a regular circle mage? Or a Templar(Trainee?)? A templar would have been awesome...

I hope the next game (if they keep making dragon age games) will finally have a non noble human.

Personally I would have given the Elves a bonus to Mana and* Stamina. On one end you have the Dalish mages who aren't restricted like Circle Mages and taught to fear their power (Mana Bonus) and for Rogues/Warriors, their nomadic lifestyle and light frame give them seemingly unnatural endurance.

*AND because Mana and Stamina are mutually exclusive. (A class either gets one or the other)

Not necessarily. Just two lines.

1: "No."

2: "Then we fight."

Yeah I was expecting too that sweet mana boost as an elven mage....guess you can't have them all.

Regarding the Qunari....i'm dead serious when i'm telling you that part of the appeal to me was using those sentences. :P

I have a feeling ranged defense is one of these things people get upset about now but soon find out is a good ability in the long run.  This games sounds as if the enemy ai is better and it will have archers a plenty.  Also do we know what 'ranged' defense bonus is?  giant rock throwing?  Siege engine attacks?  Dragon breath?  Until we know for sure what that means I would caution dismissing it.

That's the problem with humans they tend to be boring and predictable. In fantasy setting I pretty much never used humans If i can decide. In DA:O I loved the city elf and the dalish too but had tons of fun as a dwarf.

I think i'm going to play like this

1) Dalish mage

2) Qunari Warrior

3) Dwarf rogue

.........many many many months

4) Human something...

Qunari...outside of the Qun is a bummer to me. Would have preferred to be actually a member of the Qun.

That would never work. Bw already said the qunari character would not be part of the qun.

Id say the dwarven racial is best by miles.

One extra attribute wont mean anything mid/lategame. 25% magic resist is extremely powerful. Every self respecting powergamer played a Breton in Skyrim.
For starting out - the bonus 50 health and 1 attribute point will be best. But once you get further into the game the elven and dwarven racials will be vastly better.

Won't that also mean you're not getting 25% of healing magic effects?

Well you are the youngest in the family, who knows how many other siblings or relatives are ahead of you when it comes to prestige and heritage. And you are in the Chantry conclave to help relatives to seek peace between the mages and templars, so there is a possibility the Human Inquisitor might have a chance to speak up.

I am personally satisfied with the backgrounds. Never expected much from them, as BW have stated themselves, but I do hope they play some roll in the game other than just small references.

Hmm, makes sense. Though would have wished to be the eldest or only child, since in DAO you were as well the youngest. Ah well, hopefully we get to see our siblings in the game, or at least hear from them.

Those a good backgrounds. They give me enough to build a character around, without being overly restrictive. I approve.

Now I really can't decide what to be for my first playthrough. The human background is more interesting than I thought it would be.

Scene: Inquisitor, Inquisitor's mother, Inquisition scout.

MOTHER: Son, I was always disappointed you never entered the priesthood. Your father and his father before him-

SCOUT: Sir Herald of Andraste? News from Orlais.

Yep, we're kids again. But in da2 we were the oldest of the siblings.

I hope this time we will be able to modify the character body and not only the face (like ESO or neverwinter online). Because please can I have some bigger/more muscled arms?...or give females (at least Qunary) male arms :)

...otherwise nice find...thank you for sharing it!

Have we ever met a group of mercenaries in the Dragon Age who were not basically glorified thugs?

Hawke.

Yes, I wanted to experience a truly new backstory. How foolish of me. <_<

I intend to construct my own backstory around these. There's little mention here, for example, of the Inquisitor’s reasons or objectives in participating in these groups.

I think the Qunari, Dwarf, and Human Mage backgrounds give me plenty of space to work.

Also, I'd say that the Human background (non-mage) is entirely consistent with someone who intended to become a Templar, and might even allow that they'd already (albeit just) joined.

We also don't know what the numbers mean. Is it a straighr 25% miss chance (like how magic resistance typically works), is it a 25% bonus to whatever your ranged defense score already is (which would becime a bigger bonus the more you invested in it)?

We don't really know what any of these numbers mean.

Wasn't a huge fan of the Dwarf Origins in DA:O so I wasn't going to bother with them for DA:I but that Carta background and the racial bonus has me reconsidering.

Still can't decide which to pick for my first playthrough though

Human nobles are usually the only ones I play that are good little Andrastians. They're also my least favourite.

...But that description. Oh man. I am so going to play as the bad little heathen in that family now. I AM EXCITE.

Still keeping my female qunari for first and male elf for second, but after that I really don't know. I will definitely have to get round to playing them all. Carta dwarf! Spies! Yay! I might have my Qunari be a good little Andrastian for a change of pace.

I wish they weren't wearing those helmets in the images. I wanted to see some dwarf and elf faces.

Lot of back and forth. First people have a right to be upset and want other stuff. They are just disappointed. This is a forum and we can and should chat freely about what we like and don't.

Personally I never expected much. Gaider and others have stated many times very few people play anything other than human. The main population (not forum fan crowd) likes human, they can relate easier. So dwarf, Qunari and elf are a fan service and appreciated.

To qun crowd. Old trailer showed interaction with Qunari so maybe you can choose to side or rejoin it or some such. As for origins similar I don't see it.

Dwarf is surfacer not casteless which is different based on fact you arnt dealing with caste system. You weren't born in that world.

Human noble. Yes your a noble but you are chantry and Templar based. Not watching the estate while father goes to war.

So to me the job or profession may be the same but the circumstances are diff depends on how specific or generalized you want to get.

I like the list. I don't think this will dominate the game. Couple hour intro and maybe a handful of lines.

I like human mage best. Feel you may hve more pull in peace talks. Just a opinion tho.
