Would new players necessarily know that Andrasteans even believe in an afterlife? This issue is having to have knowledge of common phrasing, and it can be difficult if you've never been in that situation.
But at funerals, typically when someone is trying to be comforting and saying that the deceased won't be alone, it's because the deceased is in the afterlife with their previously deceased loved ones. In this case, Bethany's father.
It was the reference to the father that surprised me. I didn't even they all shared a father, at that point. And the PC's dialogue should NEVER tell me things I don't already know.

Okay, so it wasn't the most well-thought out piece of dialogue.
However, many people who have been in a grieving situation would see the line "she won't be alone" and associate it with general comfort in time of grieving, not bloodshed and vengeance. Not to mention, wasn't it next to the olive-branch icon?

I didn't really like BG2.
And more and more I think NWN was their best game. KotOR was also excellent. As was DAO, in some ways. And the ME games have some good features (especially the first one).
The only BioWare game that has really disappointed me was DA2. But even there, they made some good choices. I really liked that narrative structure, for example. I like that there's no obvious game-spanning big bad.
So basically all their games from before EA started messing things up to "reach more people".

he needs a 3 page explanation on what they mean... yes everyone else can just read the fing manual and figure it out.
It's just... in what universe does someone see a red fist that has an aggressive statement next to it, and not understand that they're going to say something probably abrasive.
Or see a dove/olive-branch and an inoffensive statement and think you're going to say something vengeful about bathing in the blood of your enemies?

Well I would say I noticed blue/purple/red as Diplomatic/LOL/agressive.
I didn't notice it was a bit more complicated than that until I read the Game Guide...You also had different icons , and still can't remember what those icons were for...

Olive-branch - Diplomatic
Joker - Sarcastic
Fist - Aggressive
Gemstone - Charming
Heart - Flirty
And then there were choice options, but each of those said something like "Varric - Say this" or what not.

Funny how this has gone from a discussion about the revealed classes to the Dialouge wheel icons, conversation choices & backgroudn npc chatter. As well as what the differences between CRPG and TPRPG.

You had more than this .I'm lookin at the french manual so it might not translate like this in english.
One blue looking like some angel with a halo: helpful/very nice
Olive branch: being open minded/being tactful
Trollface :Snark/funny/playful.
Diamond: use charm.
Fist : agressive.
Hammer: being direct or impolite.
I find that a bit confusing. And not really helpful .

Lol, but according to him your sibling is going to be stuck in the afterlife with all her tormentors, because he killed them all.
"She won't be alone in death because I'm going to kill all these mf darkspawn".

Okay, there were a few extra I forgot, but still the icons are meant to be used along-side the dialogue option for extra clarification.
Which ones are confusing?

Well I'm not sure there's huge difference between the olive branch or the Angel for example?
In both case you're nice /diplomatic.
I never really looked at those icons to give me insight when I first played the game because I didn't even know what they were really supposed to mean.
Then when I read about it I just forgot about those just after , and what was the difference between them.

I didn't find the icons helpful in deciphering the paraphrases....I'm sorry, what?
When I played the demo, I thought the diamond icon meant the line was delivered in a firm and somewhat callous manner, because I primarily associate diamonds with hardness. The thing that's special about diamonds is that they are hard, so lacking any other information that was my best guess.
Simple pictographs suck at conveying information.

Diamons are beautiful and sparkling and people love them.
I mean, yes they're hard too, but they're not the engagement/marriage gemstone because they're the hardest stone.

Well then all I can say is that it's your own fault for not using resources to look up what the pictographs intended meanings were, and I am now washing my hands of this topic.

One of the few things the DA2 manual did document was the basic meaning of the dialog icons, so outside of the demo there's really not much excuse to think the diamond meant hardness.

Actually they aren't wedding symbols because they are pretty (emerald fulfill that better in my opinion, but I was born in May so I'm biased, lol), they are symbols of marriage because they are the most expensive gemstone, they represent great value and commitment (as in I'm going to blow 10k on a ring as a promise to love you forever). Their hardness is actually related to that (being a unique gemstone, the hardest known natural substance to man. In terms of cutting force anyway, they shatter easily enough).
I could see how Sylvius could have been confused, but I myself knew that middle always meant funny, top always meant goody-two-shows, and bottom was 'bad', because I was very familiar with Mass Effect, and the system was the same (substitute neutral for funny).
